Superfly Productions and A.C. Entertainment are proud to announce the initial lineup for the 2008 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. I've had a great 6 years going to all Bonnaroos. I've loved the variety of acts that the jammy people hated on. But christ! Metallica has sucked since 1993. I'm not so upset a newborn child will keep me home this year.

Fuck these headliners, pretty much. But the rest of the line-up is absolutely stellar and would make for a great fest all by itself (although not one that charges the outrageous prices of Bonnaroo.) I had no idea that Orchestra Baobab even toured anymore. These guys are some of the most amazing musicians I've ever heard. Plus, MMJ, Phil, Willie, Levon Helm (!), and not to mention that bluegrass allstars lineup that looks fucking sick. No complaints here other than the weak-ass headliners (and I wouldn't even be that down on Pearl Jam headlining if the other two were worth a shit).

I'm so dissapointed. I've had such an amazing time the last 4 years at the roo. I didn't quite like the direction the past two years, but I still had a blast. i've been for the last five years, this time around i will be quite happy sitting at home, not covered in mud or enduring the tn heat. save your money for all good and other fun loving festivals. still really bummed, there are a few great acts but if its anything like last year they will prolly be booked all at the same time. i guess they don't want us peaceful hippies, bye bonnaroo it was fun while it lasted.

Pretty solid bands in the lineup, the headliners are weak however. I understand many people in the world love Pearl Jam and Metallica (circa 1980s) but it is not my thing. It's just upsetting to see how far this festival has gone away from its jammy roots. I've been to four Roos now, as a festivalgoer and as an employee but I do not think I will be going anymore. It was a good thing for a while, but like most money making ventures, it turned corporate rather quickly.

If you notice, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant are already one of the bigger acts. They are slotted to play the US, then Europe, then the US again. IF Zep does tour, the earliest would be around Septermber/October, last I read. It seems Page and Jones want the tour, but not Plant. Makes sense, save your money, Bonnaroo hasn't been great since 04, Langerado is the place to be now!!

well in regards to LEZ Zeppelin NME does list them as well near the bottom of the list of artists. NME has also been reporting all day a surprise headline announcement... its hard to believe they would all day think they had a surprise announcement that was not accurate.

And in the associated press article they make there claim according to "concert organizers" not NME

(AP article http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jXicZeCdX-3P_1eTq8cFt0Yi_j0wD8UKK3O80)

IMO Bonnaroo is doing exactly what they should and creating controversy to give those that want to be there for more than one act the opportunity to buy a ticket before those who are basing there decision on a single act.

This is a pretty weak lineup. I've been waiting for this announcement for months, only to see one of the people I hate most (KAnye) at Bonnaroo. Metallica as a headliner? Where are the Bonnaroo regulars like North Mississippi Allstars? Medeski, Martin & Wood? Les Claypool? Tea Leaf Green? Kings of Leon? And why aren't the Black Crowes there with the release of their new album and with Luther Dickinson on guitar? THis lineup is much weaker than last year, and I hate the Police.

I guess I dont understand why everyone is so upset, this lineup is better than I expected. I havent gone since the first two years, and compared to the other schwag lineups like wakarusa and High Sierra, I would almost consider going to this. I dont know how you can complain about the Allmans, Willie, Phil, B.B. King, Levon Helm, Little Feat, and Robert Plant and Allison Kraus. Sorry its not jamtrance, and its just a bunch of living legends. The Bluegrass Allstars looks good, and I like the Drive-by Truckers and DSO. I have never seen Pearl Jam, but I have always wanted to, and I think Metallica would be kind of funny. I could do without the Kanye though.

Are you guys fucking blind? Why am I the only one that is ecstatic about this lineup? Who gives a shit if Metallica and Kanye are playing. You're telling me you arent going to go to a festival because the headliners suck? Anyways I thought Kanye was the darling of the indie crowd? Hasnt he been praised on this site and others for being a groundbreaking and unique artist. Personally I think he blows but that's beside the point. DSO late night? the chance to see YMSB, BB KIng, and Jack Johnson all in one day?? Or maybe Donovan Frankenreiter, Iron and Wine, and aimee Mann on the same day! Come on Kayceman back me up on this.

I've been to the last five but I can't see myself going this year. Metallica, even if they're only one band, are a complete deal breaker for me. Even if the fest has become more diverse over the years (which was good), I just feel it's a bad fit. The rest of the lineup isn't that bad really, but over $200 for early bird tickets? Come on. The reason I liked Bonnaroo was it was more affordable compared to Lolla or Coachella. Now, forget about it.

That being said... the rest of the early lineup is pretty good. I skipped Tool last year and got some sleep so I could stay up for the late night jams, and will prolly do the same for the acts listed above. I do look forward to seeing: Willie (a legend), Raconteurs (Jack White rocked the roo last year, I hope he does more collab stuff this year), B.B. King (another legend), Yonder, Robert Randolph (the Jimi Hendrix of our time), Gogol Bordello (blew me away last year), Against Me! (always love the folk punk thing), Avett Brothers (great live show), Fiery Furnaces, MMJ, Iron & Wine, and Black Kids. This is round one still, they usually add some great names in round 2. Here's hoping for some LCD Soundsystem, Damien Marley, Black Keys, STS9, and other festival staples.

I hope the additions are great, but Pearl Jam and Metallica are already two headliners.. No room for a third.

Don't think ill be attending this one...last year's linup blew this out of the water.

IF this linup doesn't explain how crappy the current music scene is I don't know what does.

I just don't get people on this site. You guys call yourselves fans of music. You guys "pretend" that you have open minds when it comes to learning about different styles of music. But then, if anything breaks the mold you all revert to the same 5-10 bands that you have been stuck listening to for the past 10 years or so (Phish, SCI, Panic, Dead, STS9, Moe., Umphrey's, Phil, Yonder, Allmans, Etc.)

You people need to wake up. You are all becoming your parents. And not in the sense that you dig on classic rock, but in the sense that you are so in the dark when it comes to music that is really challenging and expanding what is out there today. This is a great lineup. For many reasons...but mostly because there is something for everyone there. If you can't see that, then you're clueless.

I agree with you theguykeator, 10k is where it's at. Last year was awesome and I don't expect them to sell out at all. I think they tried to do that in year 2 if you remember with John Mayer and Maroon 5 and it bombed.

Anyways, take away Metallica and Kanye West and this seems pretty good to me. I'd rock out to Pearl Jam and I'm sure more jambands will come.

$300 a ticket for a band that hasn't had a good record since 1993? Bonnaroo, i think you have a drug problem. Doesn't superfly realize that the rich and famous are not the target audience there, and this year, if your traveling from out of state to tennessee, with gas, food, and ticket prices, this fest is gonna cost the average guy about $700+ per person? this could cost a guy more that Vegoose did, and bonnaroo doesn't even have casinos................yet. Bonnaroo isn't dead, but i think superfly is killing it slowly-i hope this fest doesn't turn into woodstock99.

On the whole this is a pretty good initial lineup. I personally was totally stoked to see Pearl Jam before I read on and saw Metallica, Kanye West, than I definatly let out a big o fuck...good grief. I mean Metallica is kinding of a disturbing prospect for a headliner and if either Jack Johnson or Kanye West are filling the other headlining spot, no offense to either of them as people or decent artists but like, 3 and a half hours of Jack Johnson or Kanye West when no one else is playing...that's a painful, almost sadomasocistic (sp?) prospect. but I mean, Phil Lesh's playing two sets of music, the allman bros, mmj's back, umphreys, the bluegrass all-stars would be pretty awesome to see, yonder...I almost forgot about sigur ros. If you haven't heard sigur ros before, you should, they make really amazing, beautiful music. and orchestra baobob. if ya'll aren't familiar with them, wow, really beautiful music too. B.B King is there for cripes sake. derek trucks and robert randolph will be laying it down in some shape or form. the more I think about it, this is a pretty great lineup, the metallica and kanye west headliners are kind of extremely depressing\soul-crushing, but on the whole it'd surely be another good time down in tennesee... jed. I'll wait and see what additions they got planned before I decide to donate the kidney necessary to pay for a B-Roo ticket these days.

Although there are some gems in this lineup, Orchestra Baobab, Plant & Krauss, Sigur Ros, My Morning Jacket, BB King, plus a host of other oddities, the headliners are the lamest yet. OK Pearl Jam is good and not a surprise, but Metallica and Kanye West? Mainstream BS really. Lollapalooza underwent the same fate when they booked Metallica. Maybe they will blow people away. My advice is save your money and go to Burning Man instead. The desert of Nevada is a far more interesting place than Manchester, TN.

Unfortunately, roo could have the absolute best lineup of ALL my favorite bands and I still WONT go anymore. as has been stated before here...the first 3 Bonnaroos were awesome. In that day and age, especially the first and second roos, it was all old school, kind cultured, seasoned festie goers that had been doing these getogethers and practicing our own brand of etiquette and kindness to our one big family forever. Eventually the mainstream press got a hold of it and next thing you know, curious people of other cultures looking for a good time heard through the grapevine about this fantastic free-for-all (or so they thought, they knew nothing of our ways) camp out in Tennessee. And they told their friends...who told their frineds...and you know what happened. Now all the big Festies are filled with the kind of people who will open up the doors of their bling truck and blast RAP music so loud that no one within a quater-mile can even use their own boomboxs. I swing Jerry Garcia photos and last year at roo, about 20 to 30 percent of the kids there didn't even know who it was.

It's also happening at all the local jam-band show were everyone's kid brother or sister gets a hold of our music, but we didn't get to impart the unique etiquette that used to hold our family together. Have fun at roo this year if you go..I'll take a pass and just go to smaller off the radar festies that still remain somewhat true to our passions...peace people!

If everyone remembers Superfly sold out to CLEAR CHANNEL years ago. So now you see the direction that they want to bring it in. It will be a pop festival in no time. No more counter culture as CLEAR CHANNEL has no concept of what this festival was I will not be attending either. I have read these posts now for years and have never seen a backlash like this. The feelings are mutual. Everyone reading these posts need to send their comments to: info@bonnaroo.com

as this is a great way to flood them with the news that they have dropped a big stinky bomb on the counter culture community. What happened to the gonzo personas and the woodstock mentalities? Too bad that CLEAR CHANNEL has their hands wrapped all around this one.

Here's a positive spin on these "sellout" headliners, if anyone cares:

Suppose a young person, having only been exposed to such mainstream acts as Kanye and Metallica and Pearl Jam and Dead Cab For Cutie, decides, based on these headliners, to pony up (and with these prices a pony may not be enough, perhaps the whole horse) and attend his/her first ever music festival. In doing so, this person, throughout the course of 3 days, is inadvertantly exposed to countless AMAZING daytime/evening/latenight acts such as:

Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Phil Lesh & Friends

My Morning Jacket

The Allman Brothers Band

Willie Nelson

B.B. King

Sigur Ros

Levon Helm and the Ramble on the Road

The Bluegrass Allstars Feat. Luke Bulla, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Bryan Sutton

Umphrey's McGee

Iron & Wine

Talib Kweli

Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival

Gogol Bordello

Robert Randolph's Revival

Mastodon

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings

Ozomatli

Drive-By Truckers

The Avett Brothers

Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet featuring Bela Fleck

Phil Lesh / Larry Campbell / Jackie Greene

Yonder Mountain String Band

Dark Star Orchestra

Donavon Frankenreiter

Little Feat

Mason Jennings

(with more TBA of course)

Having now seen and heard what GOOD music sounds like, this young person becomes "heady" like so many Jambasers would want and begins to support good live music instead of the corporate record industry.

Seriously, there are so many more GREAT acts on this lineup than bad ones. The headliners may be amongst the worst shows all weekend. I won't be attending, but not because the headliners are "mainstream". I will stick to smaller festies. By my estimation, i could attend maybe 4 or 5 smaller, more intimate fests for the price of Bonnaroo.

Bonnaroo may end up like Woodstock. Think about this, a festival that started with only hippies turns into mainstream clusterf* that may cause riots. I went to 02-03, n now I feel like the promoters are saying we not only don't need that orignal group, we don't want them here either. They are pushing out the hippies and bringing in the frats, why cause frat boys don't overdose and die, they riot and bring the festival to an end just like Woodstock.

First off, lay off of Pearl Jam, they are a great band and are very capable of playing this festival with no questions asked. Eddie vedder and the boys put on a great show. I think I am more confused by this whole thing. I understand that they might be trying to appeal to a broader fan base by adding Metallica and Kanye, but on the same token they are going to be losing a lot of people. Rap shows suck live for the most part. I've never seen Metallica, but I talked to a couple people who have, and generally they said that it wasnt really a good show, by that I mean like visuals and such. A lot of people flamed on Tool (who happens to be a favorite of mine) and then after the show were completely blown away by the amazing talent and visuals that they bring. I just dont see that out of metallica and kanye. I doubt people will be blown away by either of those acts. Other then that, this seems like a solid lineup. It seems to me over the last few years, superfly has added some different acts like Volta, Radiohead, Tool. And it worked out because it turns on they are harder bands that have a jam side to them. I just dont see that from Kanye and Metallica. Im not ruling myself out from going yet, because I am waiting for them to drop another few names. I wouldnt mind seeing that Brain Damaged Eggman again this year, that shit was cool. Who knows what this years superjam could bring, I mean, hell, Robert plant is already there, and jpj seemed to enjoy himself quite a bit last year. Regardless of who else is there, if the zep boys did something. Could you really care about the other acts ?

confusing....

If Bonnaroo were to take the 2002 lineup, update it slightly to take out defunct bands they simply could not sell out and continue to do some of things they have been able to do in the past few years to make Bonnaroo such an amazing ALL-AROUND festival experience. Not being a huge Pearl Jam or Metallica fan I can say that this definitely is the weakest headlining schedule ever, but the amount of other great bands on the bill will surely make up for it and then some. The headlining shows are always a clusterf**k anyway and a good opportunity to relax/rage at the campsite before an epic MMJ or Phil and Friends late night. They could use a Muse, moe., or huge rasta act as a later addition to the lineup. There are some really great indie bands on the bill like MGMT, Black Kids, Dap-Kings, Gogol Bordello, Back Door Slam and Vampire Weekend and who can honestly complain about the opportunity to see all-time greats like B.B. King, Levon Helm, Willie Nelson, Phil and Friends, Levon Helm and Allman Brothers in the same weekend before they kick the bucket. The festival is not for everyone, then again, it never has been, just evolving each year as the music continues changing.

p.s. O.A.R. and Jack Johnson still suck. See you in June.

Ahh this has to be one of my favorite times of the year. It is clear that like in the past few years there is an evident split between the people who "hate" followed by the people who "hate" on the haters, by calling them hipocrits for saying that they are open minded, and then complaining about bands such as PJ or Metallica. Not that anyone would really care, but here is what I think: So far aside from the headliners, the line-up is very solid. The main problem with the head liners are the types of people they will attract. I know this sounds like a general stereotype but there are reasons why stereotypes are true(hell im a walking one). But I digress, the people there are going to be shitty, I have been in attendence the past 4 years. Last year was the first year I saw any obvious physical fighting, vandalism, controversy and just down right rudeness. The initial essence of this festival is lost, its innocence has been stripped and its soul raped. It truley is ashame that something which was started by people who had a common vision have been robbed by money grubbing whores. Yet, so is life, and it isnt like we dont have alternatives. I am very excited to have just as good a time for 3/4 the price...see you at All GOOD! RIP Bonnaroo it was a good run.

I was hoping this was the year I would make it back to the Roo, but it just doesn't seem worth it. Although I may have to re-think that if Sigur Ros gets a late-night set. That would be worth the trip alone.

metalica? WTF!I hope they get booed offstage. Im very sad to say that this will be the first year that me and my bro will skip the roo. Every year has been great but this just fucking sucks. Fuck superfly and AC for wrecking a good fest with this lineup. WHAT IS THIS LINEUP? there are only a few jambands and the rest is this no-talent craprock! jack jhonson is the third name on the list? phil, abb, B.B,helm,UM,trucks and bela are the best names up there for me, they would have to add ALOT more goodstuff for me to make it down for #7. no NMAS- they are a bonnaroo institution, they shouldn't be allowed to have a roo without luther and cody. the main problem with this line up is... it needs better bands. Fuck superfly for making me cheat on my best girl roo with all-good or 10k. moe's summercamp is a great fest-cu in the barn.

I will not go. So sad this year.

PJ rocks and I don't have a problem with Kanye at least being there, but nowhere near a headliner. He'll be a niche act if nothing else. BUT F'n Metallica. Who even wants to see them?

They need new headliners and not rehashed trash. MMJ deserves a headline spot, the Raconteurs could do one between White Stripes and Racon material. F'n Metallica, r u kidding me.

I understand the need to balance a profit with still trying to put on a good show, but there is no way I'm paying that much to see those bands. I'm a member of Ten Club so I get good seats to PJ and MMJ are still small enough to see at cool venues, but other than that there's no one else I'm dedicated enough to sit through that weather, wait around for, and pay that much money. I like a lot of the bands, but why not go to a festival that has 75% of the same bands with cooler weather and avoid the whole Metallica crowd. I have no problem with the band or anyone who likes them, but they represent everything that is garbage about music these days. And normally folks I know that like Metallica aren't the kind of folks I would like to hang out with. Nothing against anyone individually, but that type of crowd is not one that appeals to me.

There's plenty of other bands that can headline DMB, Bad Religion (if you're trying to broaden your base), The Arcade Fire, Incubus (I know but it's better than Metallica and younger generation likes em), Neil Young again, Muse, REM, Hell try U2, Dispatch.

This is terrible, I'm one of the biggest MMJ and PJ fans around, but I'm not going to this if I know any of my money is given to metallica, plus not a Kanye fan, or against me, mastodon. Good lord, I understand reaching out and broadening your fan base, but this isn't the fan base I'm gonna kick it with. Please tour MMJ, PJ, and Raconteurs.

Love the line up for the most part - never seen Metallica live (seen many of the others, including PJ), but it's sorely missing the New Orleans music community - George Porter and Porter Batiste Stoltz, Dr. John, Bonerama, etc...

Metallica runined Napster and they are going to ruin the roo. Please don;t bash PJ they are a band that actually stands for something and put everything they have into every performance. They have a social conscience which i think is something that people that go to the roo embrace. i like the line-up and Kanye will love ebing there as well. they always have hip hop acts so why not have one of the best in the game... but once again metallica.. hopefully the rumour that Trey is playing with Phil this summer may intice me but why travel that far when i am sure they are coming to the Boston area and hopefully the Vibes as well. They are only 4 people that could get me to go to the roo for the 4th time and i don't think they would play there when they could have there own festival with just as many people.

I can't believe everybodies bitching about the line-up. There is somthing for everyone. Boannaroo is a MUSIC festival, all types of music can be there. Everyone thats saying that they're not going because of the headliners is an idiot. I hate Death Cab for Cutie and Ben Folds but I'm not going to not go. If you don't like it, do see it, theres lots to do. And For everybody else thats saying now theres gonna be violence and the wrong crowd because of Pearl jam and Metallica , give me a break. I've been to every Bonnaroo and I listen to Metallica,Tool,Pantera, and I'm not goiung there to start trouble. I go to Bonnaroo to enjoy all types of Music from my favorites SCI to Metallica can be good just give it a chance or don't go to that show, don't miss the whole festi. Now bring on the negative comments cause I know this isn't what evrybody on this site wants to here

Ha! Now, given, I'm not into Metallica. At all.

That said, all you haters should read the lineup again, this time skipping that one band's name. Is this not the wickedest music festival you've seen in a while? Look at the rich variety of music, all the legends, and they're still going to announce more?!!?? This is a rockin' lineup. Pearl Jam is an amazing live band, all these musicians throw down in their respective styles, those comedians are awesome, (David Cross? Janeane Garafalo?) you don't like it, don't go. I realize that 'Roo used to be our little secret (for one year- 2002, I was there '03 and '04, both years CSC staff was in front of the stage. Hate to burst your bubble, but the scene's just not that underground.) but growth happens. That's why local and regional festies are popping up faster than ever. Take the advice of so many of these heads and go to Summercamp. Or, if you're like me and you dislike UM and Moe. go to 10kl. Or All Good. Bumbershoot. High Sierra. I really don't care what you go to, just stop pissing and moaning, please. This lineup rocks. One lousy band ruining four full days of experience? Not likely. Go make dinner during their set. Then, party til the sun rises. Peace!

this is expected, and so is all the fuss about it. bonnaroo has been turning more into lollapalooza each year. there will be a tool or metallica every year from now on. at least the smaller acts and late nights shows will be pretty diverse this year. the bluegrass allstars with sam bush and company are some of the best musicians to ever play. if you haven't seen bryan sutton, go! think i'm skipping the festival this year, its honestly turned into something i just don't like anymore. at least remember that it was jam music that made a huge ongoing festival like this start. mainstream music has never been able to do it.

1. FUCK METALLICA. Most disappointing thing Bonnaroo could have ever done. That night will probably turn into Woodstock '99 with these assholes headlining.

a) Their music suck

b) They are total assholes.

2. Why is Phil & Friends in the middle of the list? In they last two years they went pretty corporate on us w/ Radiohead, Petty, Tool, and Police... but atleast they had jammers close out the weekend w/ Phil in '06 and Panic last year. Who's closing this year - Mr. "kind of a big deal" Kanye West?

Fuck this. I hope all the mainstreamers out there have a good time ruining a good thing when Metallica insights a riot after people fork out $250 for a ticket that cost $180 two years ago.

To those of you saying the "expand your horizons" idiocy as though we've never heard a note of music besides what has been played by The Grateful Dead or Phish: you are morons. Many of us do not go to festivals to see Metallica or Kanye West (Jesus Christ, is there a bigger retard on Earth than this guy?). It isn't the atmosphere I am looking for at a music festival. End of story. I know that because I have seen Metallica in concert (and Tool and RATM and NOFX and Flogging Molly and too many bands from too many genre's to list), and I have seen a comparable rap act, and I know that I have no desire WHATSOEVER to camp amongst the crowd that such acts attract.

That isn't to say that they are bad people, it's just that when I want to go to Bonnaroo the very last thing on Earth I want to deal with is the douchebags trying to act all hardcore all the time. Yes I am aware that said douchebags are a minority, but their douchebaggery can be contagious.

If I'm at a Metallica show, or God forbid I got super falling-down-blackout drunk and ended up at a Kanye show (I'd hate myself in the morning just like if I woke up next to a 600 pound woman without my clothes on), I would expect the crowds, the atmosphere, and everything that goes along with it, and I would have a good time. Bonnaroo is the very last place on Earth I would want to experience those crowds. It would completely ruin the festival for me, thus I will never attend again as long as they keep dragging these super mainstream acts in.

It's funny because I remember a year ago or so someone making a comment that maybe Metallica would be a headline this year... and that was a JOKE... and yet here we are.

Festival has completely sold out. Don't mind people making money, but this is effing pathetic.

P.S.

Add Mars Volta to this list and Metallica can't SCARE ME AWAY. PHIL & FRIENDS, PHIL ACOUSTIC SET! MASTODON, SIGUR ROS, ROBERT PLANT & ALLISON KRAUSE, WILLIE NELSON, B.B. KING, BELA FLECK IN 2 DIFFERNET BANDS, TALIB KWELI?!?! I'd rather see my first Manson show at Roo than my first Metallica show... Manson puts on a hell of a show from what i've heard. And Pearl Jam would be fun to get drunk and watch. BY THE WAY, anyone attending this summer who hasn't seen/heard Mastodon yet, you're missing out.

i think the Roo is great. i mean where else could you see B.B. King, Willie Nelson, the Allman Bros., and a lesbian Led Zep cover band?? BUT....it's too much. too many people, too much sun, too much walking, too many d-bags, and the biggest thing....too much OVERLAPPING!

i wonder which "mainstream" "headliner" will drop the ball like The Police did last year.

This lineup is f*ng sweet. Forger Metallica, Pearl Jam is freaking awesome. But it's not about the headliners anyways (I slept through the Police at last years 'Roo). The depth of this lineup is the true beauty.

i'm going, mason jennings is the shit. i've just recently heard sharon jones and the dap kings and they are super groovy. also can't wait to see the allmans, mmj, willie, phil&friends, pearl jam, plant&krauss, bg allstars, dso, and levon the dirt farmer. Levon and the jacket should hook it up & so should willie and the allmans. if anyone knows what robert randolph's revival is post it he's a bad muther in '06 he made me dance a hole in the ground! metallica can suck a dick but really they got to be a more exciting show than jack johnson. Mars volta would be the ultimate add on. The dudes in metallica are bitches but they won't keep me from the roo. hey superfly you can get a better rapper than kanye, the roots rock. whats gonna happen when kanye announces his hatred of whitey like chris farley in front of whitey.

The allman's should without a doubt be a headliner over any band in this festival. I think metallica, pearl jam, and jack johnson would probably agree if you asked them. they are fucking legends. in fact levon, willie, plant, and phil are all fucking legends. Pj, metallica, jack, and kanye are simply not. i got to tell you though the headline spot is a good time to rest between the heat and the late night, see all my friends in june, play nice everybody.

why do I see people sayig Bonnaroo started to sell out and went "corporate" when they booked radiohead? Have you ever fucking listened to Kid A? Do you not remember the way they let people download for free their last album? yea man real fucking corporate. And Im not the biggest Metallica Fan but I dont really see this as a sellout move considering how unpopular their addition has been. And dont get me wrong, I love the dead, but is it really that neccessary to have Phil or Bobby be there every fucking year. I mean its great music and they are basically responsible for this whole scene but it wouldnt kill you to hear a new sound, I mean who knows you might actually enjoy it.

AintNoFreedom and RedHed---you are completely right. Has anyone really gotten past the first few artists? Jose gonzalez, Donovan Frankenreiter, and Mason Jennings. Are you telling me those guys arent any good? Why? Because they dont jam 30 minute straight? Singer songwriters are needed and welcomed at music festivals. There has been more backlash on this festival than on the scam that was Vegoose. And this lineup whoops it to shit. the same people who argued that Vegoose is so diverse (when really it wasnt) are now getting mad because this is too diverse. I really dont care if Metallica will be there. Yes they are awful about downloading (something i still do constantly---napster sucked by the way anyway) but so is Wier. Remember the archive.org situation? The thing I ask is for the few of you (i really only expect it to be a handful) that are going to do a Bonnaroo boycott I hope you actually do it and stand out side of the gates right next to the bible thumping bile spewing sign carrying psychos that seem to be at the 'Roo every year. That way I can run you both over. Two birds with one stone. I'll be the one driving the '61 VW Bus with both the string Cheese Incident bumper sticker AND the Pantera cowboys From Hell one jamming out to jack johnson's new cd. See you at the 'Roo....

Metallica is going to be awesome! I have seem them live before and they put on a damn good show... Manson over Metallica - was that a joke? I am a Manson fan, but would rather see Metallica. Everyone cried and boo hooed over Tool last year and that was the best show next to SCI! Everyone get your priorities straight and either go or don't go. There is plenty of awesome bands and plenty of shit that Bonnaroo has to offer if you don't want to see someone play. I for 1 will NOT be at Death Cab, Jack Johnson and AWFUL SHIT LIKE THAT! But that doesn't mean I am not going to the Roo for my 5th time. Lets look at the GOOD bands: BB King - he is playing in my home town and tickets cost just as much as the whole damn festival... this is an exciting show, Israel Vibration, Allman Brothers, Levon Helm, Robert Plant... Lets get some excitment!! You know Super Jam is going to kick ass with this line up. I love this festival, I love the action, I love the music and that is what Bonnaroo is... A MUSIC FESTIVAL! In not one part of the name does it say "Hippie" or "Jam" Festival...

An email i sent to Bonnaroo yesterday.....enjoy

Dear Bonnaroo - thanks for releasing the lineup today for 2008. I must say that it has come as complete shock and is, quite frankly, very disappointing. Ever since 2005, the lineups have declined & started becoming commercialized....you all know the history. As of now, you lost a group from TX, some who made the adventure the past few years. Hopefully, you all have your ducks in a row and have some serious updates to the lineup. No Trey? No decent DJs this year? Kanye West and Pat Green? I'm from TX and nobody I know who would go to Bonnaroo gives a darn about Pat Green and wouldn't go tto a free concert here. It is sad that Bonnaroo is "whoring" themselves out like this and will let anyone play now. Of course it will sell out and everyone affiliated w/ B-Roo & Manchester will make their "bread" for the year. Kudos for that. Fortunately, I was able to experience what Bonnaroo was before all this had to happen and will be able to talk about how it once was. I should have known after last year when there were "rent-a-showers" that this was coming but so soon? What a sad day for festivarians. I know these emails cross by someones desk who probably doesn't give a crap but at least I feel better now.

Metallica, lol.

I'm not ashamed, I've seen Metallica a bunch of times....of course that was like when I was a teenager and it was the Justice / Black album tours....who would seriously give these guys thier money, not to mention listen to the drivel they have put out since? I'm sorry, but since I was a fan back then I think I have a right to that opinion.

Pearl Jam I am not a huge fan but not a hater...I do know they have a loyal following and have kept making albums and touring alot. I think they are probably better than most give them credit for, and would probably be a good show - I would NOT expect them to come parading out and do 'Jeremy' / 'Alive' every night from what I've heard.

Course, why am I even sticking my nose in here....I haven't been back to Roo in two years, and won't be going again anyway.

Why are all the people that arent going (or saying that they arent going) act like that by them not attending this is going to somehow cripple superfly or keep us that are going from having a good time? Tickets are 245 not 300. They're 300 if you wait 2 months from now to get them. Coachella is just as much and except for Portishead (there is still hope for a portishead late night) Bonnaroo is ten fold the festival Coachella is this year. I still dont understand why Kayceman hasnt said anything. By the way, K-Man dont bother emailing me anymore I have filtered you on my email so it goes directly to Junk. I thought you were tight with SuperFly?? Where's your two cents? You cant possibly think this isnt a sweet lineup. Come on man, step up. I'm calling you out.

Well, one positive thing (I hope) is that I should be able to make some easier choices this year than last about which bands to see. Last year there were several difficult decisions to make. I forget which day but there were like 5 great bands (Manu Chao, Black Keys, Spoon, Ween, maybe some others) all on at the same time. There are some great acts in the 2008 lineup, hopefully not scheduled to perform at the same time.

If only Superfly would open up the headliner time slots to give people a few other options, that would be pretty cool. Or just invite the Flaming Lips again. They started early last year, before the Police had even left the stage, for their sound check of War Pigs. It was wicked...

The Police played an awful set last year, didn't they? And I love the Police, but really... it was sad.

Nothing will ever be the same, I think what is cool about this line-up is that it is roots . True, not so much Jam band as it once was but they are sure to make additions. Not a Matalica fan but someone likes them. I still have not gone to Bonnaroo but if you don't like a festival make your own.

And yes, Bonnaroo is corporate. Whether we like it or not, they will hit their target markets and make a killing off the attendees. Whether that's right or wrong, anyone who says they are not corporate is misinformed. Just because something is corporate doesn't make it inherently wrong, as corporations have every opportunity to be ethical. Many of them aren't, but they still have that choice.

WOW! I have never heard so many self righteous clowns in my life. I usually read these posts to have a laugh at people with superior musical taste and knowledge. First, if you have complained about PEARL JAM you don't understand what a good band is, or your just completely ignorant. Second, why is this festy designated to jam band fans? You complain like it is your birth right to have exclusively jam bands. Half these people sound worse that a rich, spoiled teenage girl. This is what happens with a large festy. GO TO A SMALL GRASSROOT FESTY! By the way, this is actually a solid lineup: PJ, Yonder, MMJ, Phil, JJ, Avett Bros., DSO, and on and on.

i for one have always been a roo LOVER. after a couple of days of thinking and comparing and reading this list of great profits, i have realized that people make the festivals what they are. All good is great because its small, people look out for each other and you are giving one hell of a festvial. Bonnaroo at one time was about the people, but it grew just as we did and it has changed just like we have. Its Big, its too much for most of us money wise and walking wise. I remeber being that idiot 19 year old trying anything and everything and it was amazing i must say. Now i am 24 and when i am at the roo all i say is look at those idiots doing it for the party scene and not for the music, however i have to check myself and say that was me. The point is, we live in a great country surrounded by festivals. We have the freedom to pick and choose and compare. The roo is gone but let a new one begin. Music fans its not who is right, or who is an idiot, or who no's more. Its about the unity of US. Us having a blast with eachother, having our faces melting off together. I feel that we lost that in the last couple of years or maybe thats just me. Anyways i wish you all a safe and happy festival season and maybe we can meet up sometime. Peace.

Umcheese, you may be referring to Dunegrass in Empire, MI. Great festie last year but has outgrown location in village. Rumor is the fest will be held at the Empire municipal airport this year. There has been a townhall meeting addressing local citizens' concerns and this will likely be settled in next few months and final details announced. Rumors this past year had circulated about Phil, Trey, WP, etc. Part of me hopes they are true, part of me doesn't as a huge crowd will ruin this well kept festie secret. Haven't heard of any other fest in W. Michigan other than the classic yawner at Farwell. My 2 cents on ROO; did '03-'05 and they were great but WAKA and 10klf '06-'07 were the shit! Wouldn't mind seeing PJ though as it's been 16 years since I last saw them. I'm holding out for 10klf.

no use being hung up on one or two acts. the lineup is extremely deep. for me the real downside is the sheer size of the event and the awful, shadeless camping situation. i saw an African refugee camp on PBS the other day and thought "WOW that looks exactly like Bonnaroo!" it's an endurance test, and the physical conditions take away from the musical experience. also, this festie is particulary bad in terms of overlapping bands so you inevitably miss a band that was one of the reasons you bought a ticket in the first place. lastly, it doesn't help that the crowd moves through like a plague of locusts, trashing everything in sight and leaving a dusty landfill in their wake.

What a treat, two washed up bands form the 90's and a rapper, nice work bonnaroo you have done everything but implode. 02 & 04 were great but even last years line up looked like i-pod vomit. 309 people couldent be wrong!

Beyonder Dead - We all understand that if we don't like Bonnaroo that we should go to a smaller grassroots fest..which is what most of us will do. The reason people complain is the fact that Bonnaroo used to be a LARGE grassroots fest..which is what made it special. It was the fans that made Bonnaroo possible and gave it a name. Since then they have strayed from their fans..and $250 tickets are a slap in the face.

The whole "well Bonnaroo is just evolving" argument is bogus. Because you can evolve the festival without adding these ridiculous mainstream acts and Bonnaroo would have continued to sell out. So why did they do it? Money. They sold their grassroots base out for money.

Complete drooling fool. Be careful not to break your keyboard with your retard helmet while you are typing up replies.

A lot of the lineup does look good. I would like the headlining lineup somewhere else (Kanye excepted, he is an idiot), but it just doesn't mix well here. I've seen all of those guys but Kanye, and I do not want to deal with the BS from those crowds all in one spot. It has nothing to do with the goddamn music for fks sake. Sticking to the west coast this year I think. Bobolink, High Sierra, and Horning's Hideout for me, maybe Burning Man too. I'm not driving to Bonnaroo to have to worry about getting my stuff jacked, or to have to worry about some morons trying to act as hardcore as possible trying to start fights all over the place. That WILL happen by the way.

Once again, it isn't about the music it's about the mix of crowds, I cannot envision this being a pleasant event at all.

The Good:

1) Sigur Ros

2) Allman Brothers Band

3) Phil Lesh & Friends

4) Umphrey's McGee

5) Pearl Jam

6) BB King

7) Willie Nelson

8) Yonder Mountain String Band

9) Dark Star Orchestra

10) Drive By Truckers

11) Levon Helm

12) Robert Plant & Allison Krauss

13) Jack Johnson

14) Bluegrass Allstars

15) David Cross!!!!

The Bad:

1) Death Cab for Cutie

2) Metallica

3) Kanye

4) Ben Folds

5) My Morning Jacket

Other than that, I don't have a lot of opinions about the rest of these bands. Some are pretty good (Robert Randolph, Rilo kiley) while others are not so much. (Swell Season, Broken Social Scene) Too bad Bonnaroo didn't get the headliner of Coachella. (Roger Waters playing Dark Side of the Moon)

People are over reacting about how mainstream the lineup is. Remember who played at the first Bonnaroo? Jack Johnson. Other notable mainstream acts that have played at Bonnaroo include James Brown, Joss Stone, Dave Matthews, Steve Winwood, Modest Mouse, Black Crowes, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Cypress Hill, The Police, Tool, The White Stripes, and Franz Ferdinand.

Some of these bands you undoubtedly like hearing the name of (Radiohead, Tom Petty) while others may make you cringe. (Police, Joss Stone, Tool)

Remember that Primus used to be mainstream. Don't beleive me? Watch the argumnent after the credits in Empire Records for further proof.

My take on the lineup? Sigur Ros put on the most psychedellic show I have ever seen in my entire life. It was true performance art at its finest, although I feel she atmosphere will be lost in a larger outdoor venue. BB King is a living legend that I have never seen and would really like to. I do enjoy Pearl Jam and can say their live shows are amazing.

As far as the bad bands go, does anybody remember what its like to actually go to Bonnaroo? Have you ever sat around and said "hey, there's NOBODY playing right now that I have any interest in seeing". In the rare times that I've felt that way (perhaps following the Medeski set at 5:00 am) you can still find something worth checking out. (Hey this bands cool! Particle huh? It's 7:00 am and I'm still rocking! Hopefully I'll remember this bands name five years later!) Is Metallica playing a set with nobody else on the stage? Explore the rave tent! Walk around and join a drum circle! Go laugh at the wannabe mainstream metal heads! There's an endless amount of great things to do at Bonnaroo.

That said, it is dissapointing that there are not more jam bands. Even smaller jam bands barely made the roster. (Bring back ekoostik Hookah, the Big Wu, Particle, P. Groove, or enlist the work of Covert Operations!)

Either way, I want to go. There are some great bands there. However, the $250 price tag is a little much. I guess I'll have to ponder this one for a while.

Oh, by the way, I do like the song "Jesus Walks" by Kanye. Sorry, guilty pleasure!

When does the All Good list drop?

Looks pretty sweet other than the headliners, consider this though people -IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT THE LINEUP- granted thats a big part of why one goes to a music festival, you should consider other factors i.e.-

1.)Traffic -waiting in line for 12-24 hours to get in and out is a real buzzkill, unless you have an RV : )

2.)Weather- Tennessee in June is ridiculous 100+ temps and humidity, not to mention dust storms and or rain/mud (it rained 3 out of 4 roos I went too)

3.)Crowd - I have met a lot of cool people at the roo, and a lot of idiots, shady heads are all over selling everything from crack and heroin to bunk ass molly and probably wouldn't think twice about breaking into your car/tent the first chance they get

4.)Distance- depending on where you camp, you can end up having to walk upwards of a 1/2 mile from camp to concert area, very tiring after a few times

5.)Environment/Ambiance - a ghetto farm on the side of the interstate is far from "magical", certain places are more inspiring for both fans and musicians alike

just a few observations, all that being said, I have never had a bad time at Bonnaroo, I would just prefer slightly smaller festi ala high sierra, hornings hideout, summer camp, telluride, etc.

Come on people, if we don't go and support Metallica they will only be able to afford a new forty foot tour bus with a gold toilet instead of a 50 footer with a platinum toilet. How could you live with yourselves knowing that? I have always been a supporter of Bonnaroo's diversity until now. Metallica wanted people fined thousands for "stealing" their music online. This kind of band is the antithesist of what Bonnaroo was about in the begining. Welcome my friend, to the machine. My motto this year-Screw the rest save for the best, See you on Jam Cruise.

Ya know I find it fucking hilarious how people are worried about their cars getting broken into. If you're so scared most cars have a devise built into them called a lock. Ya push a button, and BAM. All your shit is magically safe. Also everyone just needs to quit their bitchin, and tell it to someone who really cares.

Wow I know. Not a single car has been broken into or stolen since the invention of The Lock. Until now we did not understand how this sophisticated device worked. Apparently when the lock is engaged, it creates a magical force field that completely negates all attempts at thievery. Thank you for shedding light on this very obscure and complicated device.

I attended '04 and for '05 I did VIP. It was an incredible experience and although the lineup is solid, the headliners are too diverse. I remember reading a Relix article while I was at the festival in '05 in which the organizers (Superfly) said they intended to not make the same mistake as Woodstock '99 (riots, rapes, arson, etc.) by not scheduling "angst-ridden music". I feel like outside funding-groups have twisted their arms to create a more profitable lineup. I can't go to this though... In fact, I won't even consider a return to Bonnaroo unless Widespread Panic headlines two nights. That's the only way you can bring enough "cool" people together that won't fight and kill each other (Woodstock '99).
