Obama Benefit on October 13 in Pennsylvania

Just a quick update on our story from earlier this week in regards to The Dead reforming to support Presidential hopeful Barack Obama. When we first reported there were no details available, today we learned that the boys will gather on October 13 at the Bryce Jordan Center at the Penn State campus in State College, PA. The date marks the first time in four years that Dead alumni Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart will have performed together.

The Dead To Tour In 2009
Obama Benefit on October 13

The Dead
Word on the Web is that the surviving fellas from The Grateful Dead — bassist Phil Lesh, guitarist Bob Weir, and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann — are getting back together to tour in April and May of 2009. There are no further details available at this time and no indication who will join the core four to complete the lineup. Past lineups of The Dead and The Other Ones have included Warren Haynes, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan, Jimmy Herring, Susan Tedeschi, Joan Osborne, Jeff Chimenti and Rob Baracco amongst others.

Prior to any 2009 tour details, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart announced last Friday (8/29) that they will join together again on October 13 to perform a benefit concert for the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, with the city, venue, special guests and other details to be determined pending further discussions with the Obama campaign.

Last February, Weir, Lesh and Hart performed together for the first time since 2004 at the hugely successful "Deadheads for Obama" show at The Warfield in San Francisco. Now founding Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joins his musical brethren in service of this historic cause.

Stay tuned to dead.net for further details, ticket information, etc.

Mickey Hart Band and Phil and Friends were awsome this summer not to mention Ratdogs epic tour last summer with Kimock. I love Karan too, but kimock is the man.....If the dead gets back together, please put kimock on board!! GO OBAMA, check out his speech on youtube.com Made the hair on body stand on end.

Summertime....the 'who's playing with who' expert because he has *heard* plenty of dead shows....? Have you seen them?..Kimock has no current incarnation of SKB, but has graced the stage the last 6 to 8 months with more musicians than I can count, he has played with Billy, Mickey and Bobby (all in the last year). Easter Bunny? Maybe. Hey Summertime, did they call you and tell you this tour will have no new material? Please do spend your money on other up and comers and support the scene. That is about the only intelligent thing you had to say.

Summertime, You have no idea what you are talking about. To suggest that the remaining members of the Grateful Dead would tour for money is ridiculous. This band was never about the money. They were about making music and changing the world. They definitely dont need money now. I will go see them, and I will continue to seek out young vibrant musicians as well. Why does it have to be one or the other?

i am REALLY not trying to be negative here, and if you disagree i'm sorry, but to me it's a shame that the dead are reforming around politics rather than for their own artistic pursuits. Jerry would never have been a part of this, he always opted to remain politically inactive, I can't remember the quote exactly but it was something to the effect of "choosing the lesser of 2 evils is still choosing evil". I'm not saying obama is a bad candidate, but we all know that in order to be a major player in politics these days means compromising a lot of beliefs. The politicians who don't compromise are written off and don't stand a chance. It hope for the sake of the country that Obama is the man that the Dead sees him as, but I their music entwined so much with their political ideas, for me that is not the Grateful Dead and it will make the music a little bittersweet.

The sad thing is though that i really love what the plf and ratdog are doing right now respectively, but then again the dead will be great. What i dont understand is why people are so insistent that they create new material, dont just create new songs for the hell of it, play them only if theyre good. that being said did i say that i cant wait for this

Who Cares if Jerry was politically inactive. seriously. was jerry a perfect human, he was an artist of all forms, and he was quite literate and he was a smart person, but to be uninvolved in politics because things are not perfect in this system is simply cowardice and an easy way out. Jerry is wrong for not caring about politics, as a citizen we should do what we can to change what we can, do whatever is in your power to control. I love that the dead in the abscense of jerry have started to care about what politics can do for the people that need it, and Obama is the guys that can finally do the things the dead have idealized since the 60's

BG when I read I usually go down the page and speaking of freedom I think the current executive administration has clearly taken away many of our freedoms while strengthening their executive power as to where the system of checks and balances has become a system of checks written out to anyone who will agree with their neo-con philosophy. Let's see Patriot Act, Wire Tapping, unlawful Firings, Indictments, dodging subpoenas, I think that our leaders should be responsible for their action do you not agree?

Matt and Trey of South Park said it best in there episode where the kids vote between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. Sure, it is obvious that Obama is the lesser or two evils, but I am really fucking sick of choosing between a douche and a turd. Give me someone who is going to make REAL change (Ron Paul!!), not more of the same demopublican politicians who are going to spend billions we don't have to make government even bigger on programs that don't work.

Awesome on the Dead Tour, but don't support the dude who isn't McCain because he isn't McCain. These 3rd party politicians who are not bound by the demo vs. repub banter really need your support, need some celebrity support to get their word out, and to let people know it is OK to vote 3rd party if we want REAL change.

Smashy Smashy - I used to share your sentiments. I voted for Nader 8 years ago. Guess what? It's a wasted vote. I don't see any change to the 2-party political system coming any time soon. There is no perfect candidate...especially not Ron Paul. I typically find that Ron paul supporters are rather eccentric conspiracy theorists without any empirical data to support their positions.

Sorry to break everyone's heart on this thread but, as much as i love the dead, supporting obama or mccain for that matter is absolutely rediculous. Obama is going to destroy this country justs bush has done and just mccain would as well. They are both bought and paid for by the military industrial complex, ie the bilderberg group and other globalist think tanks like the CFR and trilateral commission. I just want everyone out there to ask Bob Wier, WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU DOING AT BOHEMIAN GROVE!!! As much as i love the guy and his music, that question is too important in light of the fact that they are tossing support to a mainstream puppet candidate. BTW HoodooVoodoo, not to call you out but that conclussion that you just expressed is the conclussion that you have been herded too. This might be hard for you to accept but the reason why they give you two of the same candidates and call one democrat and one republican is so you either decide between a douche and a cunt or just say fuck it and not vote. So dont go saying a vote for ron paul or a vote for nader is a waste of time. In a constituitionalist republic(thats right, america is and never was a democracy, see thomas jefferson) we arent supposed to ahve to choose between twocandidatesthat teh elite choose for us. Stop being a fucking pussy, grow a set and start voting for people who make sense, instead of the scum bag dictators who are going to carry out the new world order agenda. Call me eccentric all you want, at least im not a fucking sheep like your dumbass. Look up these words on youtube, bilderberg, endgame, jordan maxwell, building 7, arron russo, america freedom to fascism, fabled enemies... Stop being so fucking stupid BTW, if you see the media creating a major candidate you can assume they are bad. Trust me, this assumption is always true... all of you out there who cant understand whatim talking about should think about jumping into the ocean, your too stupid to survive...

Soldier's Field tries VERY hard to not have concerts anymore, which is why most acts get sent to Northerly Island (which I once loved, but my last few trips there have been far less than a "fun time"). I'm guessing that if it's April and May, either Allstate Arena or perhaps even the Auditorium Theatre. I wouldn't doubt A Rothbury spot(if they Do have the fest again), or maybe a 2 or 3 night run at either Alpine or Deer Creek. Just hope it comes within a 2 hour drive to chicago.

Folks claiming that the lack of new music will equate to a "grab the money" tour apparantly know nothing about the development of material by the Grateful Dead. Since the beginning, studio albums were made up, primarily, of songs the group "worked out" live over the course of several years before releasing. This would not be possible in the context of a single planned spring tour. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear a debut or two of a Hunter or Bobby song, but it's silly to think these guys who haven't even been in a room together for more than a half hour in the past four years would want to release an entire album of untested material.

Sorry smashy smashy, Ron Paul is a tool. And delaneyira, i understand your sentiment on everything in the world is fucking evil blah blah blah, BUT if you don't believe that votes for Nader were wasted votes and that we havn't been worse off having Bush in office vs. Gore or Kerry then you have missed the last 8 years. I agree that the 2-party system is fucked BUT to believe that it won't matter if Obama or Mccain is president is crazy. Obama is clearly standing for stopping the war and pulling troops unlike Mccain. That alone is reason enough in my book to support him. But if you are happier surfing youtube and wallowing in how the world is a helpless mess, have fun with that.

Calm down, just because people don't share the same political view as you doesn't mean that they 'cant survive in life'. Just because the Grateful Dead in their heyday were against the establishment doesn't mean that they can't vote of support a person who they seem to think is a figure that can do a lot of good, and is going to try and bring america back on course to drive towards the vision it once was. It's not like they support every dem candidate, not like they toured for gore or kerry or the re election of clinton, but they see this dude as different. all people who are apathetic towards politics should just leave the country because they are not doing their duty as a person and citizen of the united states.

I don't if anyone caught it, but in the recent Rolling Stone interview with Obama on the cover he cites the Grateful Dead as a band that he likes when asked about what is on his ipod. Probably the first possible president that would ever say they actually like the Grateful Dead.

I dont mean to downplay the importance of politics in today's society...your involvement will undoubtedly determine the condition of our nation for (at least) the next four years to come...however, in regards to this article, i feel the focus should be more heavily directed towards the INCREDIBLE news that the DEAD will once again be hitting the road; and bringing along with them an allstar lineup that we should all be grateful to have the opportunity to see...thats just my opinion...............

"WHY I AM VOTING DEMOCRAT "

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

*I'm voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

*I'm voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq , I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they now think we're good people.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

*I'm voting Democrat because I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe three or four pointy-headed elitist liberals need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would NEVER get their agendas past the voters.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there and come over here, I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them off with.

*I'm voting Democrat because I love the fact that I can now marry whatever I want. I've decided to marry my horse.

*I'm voting Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 10% on a gallon of gas are obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 18.75% isn't.

*Makes you wonder why anyone would EVER vote Republican, now doesn't it?

Let me first say this! The dead live in Marin Co. as a past resident myself i can tell you it is extremly republican!!! secondly leave the music and the politics in their own separate places. The gRateful dead were anything but Political I bet jerry could be nothing but ashamed of this so-called stand!!! And really the best these guys can do is a dead cove band albeit the best dead cover band ever but still... I would go see em as I did when they played alpine and they ripped the wholy shiite out of the place!! But this political tour makes me ill! I dig the donor rap that phil has cause its a great cause having family that needed donation but this is a wreck! I fthey only knew what Obama was really about! Being originally from CHicago I can answer all your questions about who THE man reallyis! Try this on fer size. He was the lawyer to the slumlord of Chi-town !Obama was the lawyer that helped destroy then relocate all the projects in the south side and them distributed them among cities they never had a place in! Hows that for you? The man they are trying to elect is just another face-man. And let's not confuse the fact of how he became a Senator!! Thats even better. Go do your research and realize that hea and McCain arent that far apart! Blues for allah inshallah!!! Whatever will be , will be!!

you haters act like some of our most revered living icons just attach themselves to a political event cause they wanna be popular or something. they have never played such events ever before, and possibly, never will again. However, they have seen something in this (less then perfect human being, who isn't?) man that most Obama supporters have glimpsed. a chance. A chance to take just one little step away from business as usaual in washington. and little steps are all you can take in this day and age of politics. that's why 3rd party votes are just wasted at this point in time and only serve to elect the definately wrong guy.

washington is so very f'ed by the last administration, I don't envy anyone who has the task ahead of them.

If you consider yourself a fan of this music that is called jam, you must know that bashing Obama is like bashing the Grateful Dead. We trusted them all these years...why stop now?

And no offense to those who love him, but if Jackie Greene takes the lead, i will definitely pass. Good luck Jimmy Herring in TOO or TD or whatver they call it this week is about as likely as you encountering Tooth Fairy. Jimmys gig *IS* WSP now. It is his to lose. Jimmy lives in GA. WSP is based in GA. Much simpler than flying out to SFO for rehearsals or whatever with TOO or TD or PL&F or whatever.

OVERALL:

First is there a single planned tour? Dead.net the official source for GD, TOO, TD news makes no such specific mention, yet Faux news, jambands.com, jambase.com, etc speculate that there is in fact one? We'll see.

Second, the development of material by the gd and too or td are two seperate things.

because they are two seperate bands.

not the same at all.

the grateful dead actually *released* brand new albums with new material regularly.

whereas the other ones, the dead, etc have never released an album because they have not developed new material even though they have had the chance over the course of 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, & 2004. yet they did not TAKE the chance over the course of opportunties they had during all of those years.

A song or two debut does not/would not creativity make. 10-12 songs then maybe we're talking.

And what it is even sillier is to think that these guys who haven't even been in a room together for more than a half hour in the past four years let alone rehearsed for that amount of time would decide to do a full blown tour.

Obama benefit is going down on Oct 13th in State College PA.

Bob, Phil, Bill and Mickey to Play Obama Benefit on October 13th (UPDATE)

For Immediate Release

September 2nd, 2008

Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart announced today that they will join together again on October 13th to headline a benefit concert for the Presidential campaign of Senator Barack Obama, at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, PA. Also appearing will be the Allman Brothers Band, plus opening act to be determined.

Last February, Weir, Lesh and Hart performed together for the first time since 2004 at the hugely successful "Deadheads for Obama" show at The Warfield in San Francisco. Now founding Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joins his musical brethren in service of this historic cause, with Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti rounding out the band.

A Dead tour would be cool but supporting a candidate who supports the institutionalized racism that is affirmative action is retarded. Maybe some of you like to be blatently discriminated against but I don't. Musicians and actors all support Obama because they don't live in the real world. Orpheus.. Do you always vote for who "brings you LSD and music" wants you to vote for? All we are saying is someone should tell us how Obama is going to make change and what exactly is he planning on doing. And if an artist supports him, I think it is appropriate that they know this too. So far everything he has suggested is old news, makes the fed. government even bigger and wastes plenty more money we don't have. It's what Bush and McCain do minus the war in Iraq, but just watch it will be a new war somewhere else. It always is with these same old politicians.

I think the members of GD should spend a shitload of cash sitting in the studio to release new material....with record sales declining year after year as well as our ability to listen to over produced studio CRAP I pray for new material and a studio release....something like Go To Heaven or Built to Last would be killer!! To all the people hating on Obama in this thread, don't worry, it sounds like when election day rolls around, he'll probably lose anyway. It's all a bunch of bull shit spin doctoring, and most people don't even understand the issues. Its just that republicans tend to be more aggressive and better at the spin. That being said, it is amazing to me that SINCE most people don't understand the issues, the guy who most closely resembles GWB is going to win, boggles the mind. Since both candidates are essentially the same aside from the normal bullshit talking points that only come up in campaign season, I would think that people would vote for Obama just b/c he's a dem and that is the closest we'll get to "change" in this country. Oh well, I guess having a 78 yr-old shell-shocked multi-millionaire and the mayor of a 6,000 pop. town in alaska as the no. 1 and 2 in charge won't be so bad. sigh. No Jeremy myths don't enter my mind or home.

Jimmy would have to have an olive branch extended to him as well by Phil or vice versa. He didn't leave PL&F's on the best terms.

Jimmy also has a brand new solo album(his first) coming out here in a month and a half which he has hinted will result in a supporting tour. He has a wife, 2 children, a motorcycle, fishing, & WSP to take up his time next year. If he gets really antsy maybe some ARU gigs.

Apparently the composers of the articles on www.jambase.com news section have visions of the tooth fairy(myths) because neither www.dead.net nor www.widespreadpanic.com(the one and only news item dated today has no mention whatsoever right now) mention anything about what has been reported here recently. And jambands.com for that matter.

"Well, you probably know this about me Dean, I may have even talked to you about this before. I’m just not any good at spreading myself thin. Something’s gonna suffer if you try to do too much at one time, you’re gonna hit that syndrome: jack of all trades master of none. I like to do one thing at a time and this is the exception, even me doing this record during Panic’s time off, I normally wouldn’t be doing something like that."

I'll believe it when I see it on wsp.com only.

the problem bowlegged texan is not that you shouldn't be a dead fan if your not extremely liberal, it is more simply that if you enjoy the way in which the grateful dead approached music, and this is the way that they approached many other things as well. If you enjoy the logic behind the culture of the grateful dead, then it is not being liberal it is simply being free to do whatever, free form, improvisation, these are brought about by not having restrictions. Just lift the veils of ignorance, and you get the release of the burden of restriction. but what the hell did i just say?

Well guys, this is coming from someone who sees the Grateful Dead as one of the biggest musical inspirations in his life and who believes that they should be the band that unites all of us purely out of the goodness that is live music! I must say that after learning that Barak Obama (three days after Russia decided to invade Georgia) said that the United Nations should be the decision makers on how to deal with this conflict, even though Russia has the veto power in the UN, I now believe that Barak is completely incapable of having the intelligence to run this country! In fact, I doubt in his ability to be a Senator! I have been waiting for another tour for so long and I am heartbroken about this! But, I will not be giving any of my money in support for this media tool. All of you can say what you will but that is my stance.

Maybe the money I donated to Obama will help me here. I'm going to my local Obama office today to volunteer with some stuff and I'm asking for some favors! I figure people who have supported the campaign with money and labor should be rewarded! They did give me first dibs at Stevie Wonder and DMB tickets which I didn't take because of work so....

noapollyon: the thug oil barons running Georgia would like the US to step in. It's all about Caspian Sea oil rights. Vote for McCain, just dont complain if you or your friends have to go die for the elitists who control America!

I think that keeping those oil rights out of the hands of Russia is the biggest priority of the issue. Russia already controls most of the oil that is going into Europe and that is the main reason that the EU has not proposed sanctions against Russia over this conflict. After Russia's continued support for barbaric dictatorships like Iran and Venezuela, the World does not need a European monopoly on oil from the likes of Putin's puppet, Medvedev.

I'm alarmed that anyone would call Cesar Chavez a barbaric dictator. It is obvious to me that whoever believes this just listens to the biased American Media rather than the real poor people of Venezuela. Venezuela has over 80% of its population that is extremely poor (our standards of poor in the US don't even compare) and Chavez has done more for these people and his country than anyone else! That is why he is democratically elected by an over 80% of the population, quite different than the US where a 55% victory is considered a landslide.

weird chavez is only pulling in 80% of the votes....most dictators get closer to 100%.....just try forming a 3rd (or even 2nd) party in venezuela and see how great chavez is....

.

.and your point about our "poverty" in the US not even comparing to poverty across the rest of the world is SO TRUE...so very very true

My best friend works at the Wachovia center, I asked him Tues. if he heard about dates being held for the Dead.He asked his contact in the front office-the guy looked suprised and said it was the first he heard about it.The guy called hinm Thurs.and said the Dead put a hold on the Spectrum for 2 nights, my buddy asked if they were in April,he said "no,in October" I see someone gave me a thumbs down vote on my last post.Hey don't shoot the piano player!Stay tuned.............

Missed their show in Feb at the Warfield (RIP) but i heard it was absolutely phenomenal! They should keep Jackie Greene and Molitz then add kimock who is a true master on the guitar. But for me being 18 this is so incredible because not only is it THE DEAD, but its also a cultural movement with Barak.
