The Disco Biscuits :: 02.16.07 :: Starland Ballroom :: Sayreville, NJ

Jon Gutwillig - The Disco Biscuits
02.16.07 :: New Jersey
An argument can be made that the single most important venue to the current lineup of The Disco Biscuits is either New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom or, just maybe, Sayreville, New Jersey's Starland Ballroom. Since the Biscuits' first shows there in May 2004 each trip has presented some extraordinary musical spectacles. Jon "Barber" Gutwillig (guitar), Marc Brownstein (bass), Aron Magner (keys), and newest addition Allen Aucoin (drums) made sure that this past weekend was no exception.

Thursday night saw only the second wheel-of-fortune type show ever, where Lady Luck decided the direction of the band, the audience, and the musical journey. The first appearance of the wheel was, fittingly enough, in Atlantic City on 10/25/02. This second spin of the wheel saw the band dust off some old tunes that hadn't seen the light of day in some time, but it was clear they truly hit their collective stride and settled in on the following night.

Friday began with a very lively "Mindless Dribble" > "Solstice" > "Mindless Dribble" sandwich, which fired up the crowd and set the tone for the evening. Most fans seemed out for blood after standing in long lines in sub-freezing temperatures awaiting entrance for the previous evening's show which caused them to miss the entire first set. However, "Solstice" was just the track to help relax the masses. A nice slow, reggae and Middle Eastern-esque jam took shape in the middle of one of Bisco's biggest mindblowers, "Dribble," which segued into "Songs of Joy." The set was rounded out by an absolutely delicious, danceable "Rock Candy" that left more than a few cavities in its wake.

The Disco Biscuits :: 02.16.07 :: New Jersey

Marc Brownstein - The Disco Biscuits
02.16.07 :: New Jersey
Although the show as a whole was solid, the night's highlights most definitely occurred during the second set. It opened with "Strobelites and Martinis," another of the weekend's bust-outs off of Bisco Lives 2. This tune was filled with Brownstein's extremely funky bass lines, while Magner's keys produced a swirling effect like a U.F.O was hovering just above the venue. Barber's simple, repetitive riffs and Aucoin's danceable beats laid the sprawling, spiraling groundwork for the weekend's final three sets, which spontaneously combusted into an all out dance party, thanks in part to this tune's placement and fury.

"S&M" wove its way through "Cyclone," eventually landing in "42." When I later asked Brownstein what he thought the highlight of the night was, he was quick to look in this tunes direction, saying "That was a lot of fun." Throw in a beautiful "Kitchen Mitts" and a "Munchkin Invasion" set closer, and even though "I come from the city" (of New York), I was more than happy to "come from the jungle" that Friday night, a jungle that I will forever think of as "Slayerville," New Jersey when the Biscuits roll into town.

02/16/07 Starland Ballroom, Sayreville, NJ
Set I: Mindless Dribble > Solstice > Mindless Dribble > Songs of Joy, Rock Candy
Set II: Strobelights and Martinis > Cyclone > 42, Kitchen Mitts, Munchkin Invasion
Encore: Lithium

I loved the shows but that place sucks. They oversell to the point where theres not an inch in the house and the drinkers get shoved into tiny sections which aren't the floor.

The actual music was great, but that place is terrible! I'm never going back there again. After driving through a lot of traffic to get there, they end up having me wait outside from 8:30 till 11:15 while everybody cuts the "line" that wasn't even moving! A ton of us stood out there in the FREEZING cold (I couldn't feel my feet) for hours in a line that wasn't even that long, simply because the people who work there were too inept to let us inside the venue. We missed the ENTIRE FIRST SET of the show! Not to mention, the security there is crazy, and the place was totally oversold. I hope the Biscuits never play there again. But I don't care who plays there, I'm NEVER going there again!

Starland Ballroom is the worst venue in New Jersey. After seeing the Biscuits there last year I couldn't bring myself back because of the overall shittiness of that venue. It looks like I made the right decision since people on line missed the whole first set? jeez man... how about the Biscuits just play 3 nights of Hammerstein from now on?

I saw D.S.O. there last year, and had 2 tires slashed in the lot across the street (redneck v.f.w. vets). The venue is way , way out of town, in the middle of nowhere, wicked hard to find, and yes: security is psychotic. The only kool thing about the venue is it has a nice art- deco facade, and resembles some venues the dead uese to play at....oreo from new Haven

i dissagree with thoose of you who say new jersey sux for shows. I must say that come summer time PNC art center in homdel is the sickest in new jersey. friday was the best night, i kept getting kicked by a really intoxicated dude behind all three nights. It was very different from other biscuits shows because the scene seems alot druggier than other shows. biscuits should play pnc in the summer to give outsiders a better perspective of what new jersey venues have to offer. i dont care ill put up with it to see a sic show

after listening to this nite, and being there for saturday, saturday was a better show imo

and as far as the starland goes, it's not a bad venue, it's only bad for a few bands that go there

when i saw moe there back in october the place was fine, other than no smoking inside bars in NJ anymore, which of course causes problems for the sweet smoke.

I still enjoyed myself on saturday though the scene was very chaotic, to many young kids on too many drugs, searching for something that is right in front of them, the music, yet they have to continue to move about, thinking that where they end up will be better than where they came from.

the grass is always greener, huh people?

seriously though, for all the bashing that is going on for NJ, come visit my neck of the woods down here in SJ, you'll get a different look at NJ. I live on the outskirts of a State Forrest, Wharton State Forrest to be precise, and we have the largest aquafir in the world right beneath us b/c of the sandy soil.

So to all of those who call us the armpit of the nation, sure Norhtern NJ is dirty and all but that is mainly b/c all the commercialism up in that area, and the fact that it is so close to New York.

Bisco can't make everybody happy, they could have played in philly, they could have played in New York, instead they choose a half way point, and get slammed by everybody for making that call. and the reason for the problem on thursday was b/c of that traffic backup in Pennsylvania, the band got there late, and had to do soundcheck later than scheduled causing them to open doors late, and the fact that they had so many will calls, b/c they announced the show too late for mail order. Rumor has it that they played that extra show to cover some debt one of them got into during jam cruise, supposedly somebody had to cover one of the bisco boys tab, and bisco decided to do an extra night to make up for the tab, i guess they gamble heavy

anyway, im proud of South Jersey, and am all for a secession from north jersey.

in my eyes North Jersey should take New York City and break away from south jersey, we can have two states. We'll call New York City and Northern New Jersey (above Trenton) and we'll call it New York, the rest of New York gets a new name like, Yorkshire or some shit. Then South Jersey can be named Jersey

Im for it, anybody else?

oh yeah bisco melts my face and allen breaks snare drums, wow!

dedhed6111 - There is nothing wrong with letting others practice personal politics. Those politics become OUR business within OUR scene when kids on Ketamine act like E-Tards and bring the unwanted attention to these shows. Ketamine is known as a date-rape drug to law enforcement. Common sense says that the police will be present and seek arrests.

Hippie? What hippie? Neo-hippies? What the hell is a hippie?

Open your mind too far and your brain might fall out.

i live in north jersey and yes, it does suck. the only good thing is that i'm 10 minutes outside the city and get to see all the crazy shows that roll through there so yeah, thers ALOT better venues then shitty starland. good thing birch hill closed down that place was a wreck. pnc isn't that great either, the sound really blows compared to some other outdoor venues i've been to. however, there actually are good places to see music in new jersey, you've just gotta find them.

your right dedhead- no one forces K on us. but all those motherf***ers that do too much of it are pushing everyone around and falling all over the place. Im not against drugs, but these bisco kids are ridiculous and self centered. They almost ruin the show for everyone else. I love bisco enough to go and deal with the bisco kids. but that doesn't mean that the show wouldnt be much better without them.

i like 50% of bisco crowd (the ones that arnt self centered and close minded towards other music) and 100% of their tunes. I hate how when i am starting to get into a jam, i am rudely interrupted by someone quirkin out and convulsing on the floor to my right. You kids can get high and stuff, just know your limits because more than just your night it being ruined. high light of the weekend, hands down, was strobe light martini. See you at langerado.

Just some information to anyone planning on attending the late night show in FL at Revolution. The staff/security are absolutly HORRIBLE! They will kick u out if caught smoking herb, but not before they grab you by the collar of your shirt and start pulling. They are all full of rage and ready to crack skulls, SERIOUSLY. The only reason i'm posting this comment is because the 'starland' reviews reminded me alot of Revolution. I expect there to be alot of negative posts after this show. WHY would he switch to a PRS??? Sorry... I hate PRS guitars. The epitome of the Bland Great Tone. They sound good, but its so generic and kills any individuality. Its no small wonder that both Trey and Jerry had their bands explode in popularity because of their 100% original, unique guitar sound. Same with David Gilmour, and Jimi Hendrix. These are people where all you need is a 10 second piece of music in order to identify them, because they each crafted their own unique tone along with their own unique playing.

I'm sorry, but anyone who plays a PRS is gonna sound exactly like anyone else playing a PRS. I liked Jon because he was original and played that sick Gibson hollowbody. Thats part of why his playing is so sick and soaring, just like Trey's. Its all because of the hollowbody.

anyway i'm sure its still great... I just hate PRS guitars haha.
