Chuck Garvey of moe. sits in with Uncle Sammy |
Perhaps the best jamband ever to come out of Boston, Uncle Sammy is finally making their first trip south of Washington DC. Their funky improvisations have already garnered them a large following in the notoriously fickle Northeast. Their guitarist, Max Delaney, has a broad range of influences, but his playing mostly recalls John Scofield, Pat Metheny, and Walter Becker. Delaney has become an edgier player in the last couple of years without sacrificing his outstanding knack for subtlety and melody. Bassist Brian O’Connell is one of the great young minds in the jamband world. His acrobatic bass and Chapman Stick delivery “wows” audiences nightly. He also composes challenging and memorable pieces, like the band’s epic, “The Village.” The heavily Medeski-influenced Walter “Beau” Sasser, and the merciless drum attack of Tom Arey round out the band.
The band’s live approach has quickly become the stuff of New York legend. Their headlining shows at Wetlands are widely circulated, and they gladly offer over four hours of music when given the opportunity. Their New Year’s show in the lounge at Wetlands was a four set marathon of improvisation, groove and mayhem, which to this day is considered one of the all-time greatest shows in the history of that venerable club (it started at 9:30pm, and ended 6:15am!!)

1-26-01 Somerville Theatre, Somerville, MA |
The rest of the jamband community has not overlooked Uncle Sammy’s talents. Just two months ago, they were invited to participate in a Wetlands Power Jam, which found them performing with members of Deep Banana Blackout, Soulive, moe., Guster, The Spin Doctors, DJ Logic, ulu, The Disco Biscuits, and many others. At the Power Jam, moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey was so impressed with Delaney’s guitar prowess that he was inspired to make an extra effort the next time he was in Boston. On March 3rd, after playing a two set sold out moe. gig at Boston’s Orpheum Theater, Garvey hustled across the Charles River to sit in with Uncle Sammy at a Cambridge club.
Now music fans in the South will finally have an opportunity to catch this hot new act as they hit multiple venues in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida highlighted by a 2-night stand at Barefoot Bob's in Key West. Many die-hard fans from the Northeast are expected to travel to Florida for a week of Uncle Sammy shows in the tropics.
