MMJ 2 NIGHT PROM IN ATHENS

Someone will probably make fun of this soon, but i wish MMJ would have played at my prom.

For all of you at Jambase, you might want to change that headline...ATL is Atlanta, not Athens, GA. Meanwhile, MMJ are badasses and I totally wish I could see these shows.

The Roots on Sunday, 2 nights of MMJ, then MMW, then (after an all night drive from ATL to FLA after MMW) I'll have some MMJ, MMW, and a shitload of others for 3 days at Langerado. And it's all during my spring break. LIFE IS GOOD.

Interviewer: Your music has been referred to as psychedelic, what about your music do you think people find psychedelic?

Jim James: Well I think our music probably sounds psychedelic due to the massive amounts of psychedelic drugs we've been consuming.

I caught the last show these guys played at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland. It felt like I got punched in the ears for two hours. It really felt like an insult as a fan, the show was that loud. Sold out, high energy and fun for a couple of songs. Then the pain just beat out every thing else. My ears rang for three days and I was pissed off for a week. It was an odd feeling to be that beat up by volume. I saw them indoors and outside at HSMF and looked at these guys like they we're today's Zep. After the punishment in Portland I just think they're lacking a sound guy. The fans deserve bettet...jesus christ...I'm getitng old...I'm bitchin about concerts being too loud...fuck

This is what ruffled dress shirts and velour suits were made for! I'm so jealous of everyone who gets to go to this. MMJ stir up a kind of magic that few can compare to. The growing sense of theatre and play to their concerts is really special. There's a lot going on here in a simple age. Amen for that.

And two words for trustme and anyone else beat up by sound at a show: ear plugs. Seriously, bring them all the time and you'll never regret it. Take it from a tour pro...

That's one of the best ideas I've heard in a long time! These guys rule and not because they throw these hella-creative rock-outs but because James and Co. hits homers
on all levels.

This is a prom i would go to and stay til it was over. Sounds like one hell of a party. I wish they would do a themed show in Louisville. The palace or the gardens would be sweet. I also hope they show up at bonnaroo, won't be the same without the Jacket.

Had a similar experience to trustme, except I saw them at Irving Plaza. The sound was not good.

Is MMJ even a jamband?

This was likely sold out the minute it was announced. 40 Watt is not abig place and MMJ now have a big, rabid following. Why whine at Jambase for something out of their control? This might have had a fan pre-sale before press release went out. The guest list might be a 100 people each night so there's few tickets left. There's all kinds of reasons a special show at a tiny venue is sold out. None of them have to do with Jambase.

And yes MMJ is a jam band in that they're a rock band that plays with the arrangements, moods, tempos, etc. of the material in the live setting. Mainly, they are a GREAT band in every regard and THAT is what I think Jambase at its core celebrates - great bands discovered and explored without preconceived notions. The best ones blow away our expectations anyway.

Does it matter? Here's hoping for an Earth Angel > Johnny Be Good cover. MMJ rules.

Do their setlists differ from show to show? Do they play different versions of songs at every show? Are their jams rehearsed or is it improvisational. Do they play 4 minute songs or 12 minute songs?

This is what makes a band a jamband

Even your definition, marcsmall1, MMJ is a jamband. Their shows vary nightly. You might hear an acoustic version of a tune one gig and a full blown electric blowout version the next time. They play both 4 & 12 minute songs, and they improvise as well as compose their jams, not unlike the Black Crowes. It's funny to me how much energy is being wasted in the comments in the past few months trying to define what is and isn't a jamband. The name "jamband" was never one thing and it's probably past its usefulness at this point. Jambase celebrates bands who have the goods live and in the studio. Beyond that super broad idea I'm not sure there's any criteria that should exclude a single band.

This show was announced two days before the tickets went on sale AND there was a fan presale. I live in Athens and 40 watt has a capacity of less than 900. By the time jambase could have even put this up the tickets were gone. Dont be mad at them...the whole prom thing just happend a few days ago and thats whis up here now...all i know is that the greatest live band( also my favorite band) is playing in my favorite city, at my favorite venue...somebody pinch me...see yall there!!!!

A couple things--Yes it matters if they are a jamband, if theyre not I'll just buy the album and wont bother seeing them. And jamband is not just a term, it means a band who improvises......I think the thing thats ridiculous is that certain bands are being covered on this site that do not even have decent live shows....Thats why people are making a thing outta it

Listen marc, they are an incredible live band. Their songs don't have to be 20 minutes long for them to be placed in the jamband category.

My Morning jacket is probably the best live show out there today. They don't need to do 20 minute dribbling even though they get crazy spacious when playing "Lay Low". What makes MMJ the best love band out there today is the power and heart and soul that they put into their live sets. They put more energy into one set than the Biscuts put into three. They sweep you off your feet. When you see them play "Gideon" live, you will have an out of body experience.

Oh and hey Mccarrol, maybe they'll play that song that goes like: "Don't need no money/Dont need no fame/Dont need no credit card to ride in this game/That's the power of love"

Haters, haters, haters. Every message board I've ever seen on the entire fucking internet is full of haters. Who cares if MMJ is a jamband or not? Jambase has stopped covering ONLY jambands for a long time; there are hiphop, electro, reggae, etc etc bands all over this site. Quit bitching about it.

I love I don't think I'm wrong in saying that MMJ can sometimes captivate more emotion in less then 4 minutes, and sometimes "real" jambands can't captivate anything in over 30. (e.g. Gideon)

For the person above who asked about leaving prom early for something better to do...not that one is better than the other, but Apollo Sunshine and Earl Greyhound are playing at Tasty World in Athens on the 2nd night of this run...consider it "The Afterparty"...and for those of you shut-out, just make it "the Party"

dude marcsmall1 there are tons of bands that arent jambands that i love to see live. being a jamband has nothing to do with the quality of the show. my favorite show in '06 was drive-by truckers in memphis. they didnt jam but they sure as hell blew the roof off the new daisy

Wilm---That's great and it works for you. However I often get bored at shows in which there isn't much improvisation. With the rare exception of certain Legends of Rock and Roll.

I get bored at most shows where there is too much pointless improvisation. Improv is a good thing but the scene is saturated with too many bands that improv and can't write songs. There's more music out there than just jambands. Only liking bands that improvise is pretty narrow minded.

You except to legends of rock and roll? That sounds like a BS cop out to me. If a group writes good tunes and can perform those songs live in a way that their fans enjoy, they're a good live band. Look at the Flaming Lips, Ween or Tool... all have great live shows that aren't reliant on improvisation.

nfenne--Why can't you just accept that some people have different tastes tha you. I do not enjoy the bands you just mentioned one bit. Maybe i'm just old school. But everytime I go to see a band that plays 100% rehearsed shows, I leave early.

this sounds like a kick ass time.. just saw their live dvd okokonos for the first time - feckin' rocked me.
