NEIL YOUNG'S LIVE AT MASSEY HALL SET FOR RELEASE MARCH 13TH
The 1971 Concert Is The Second Album in Performance Series

On January 19, 1971, Neil Young performed at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada. In many ways, this was a major homecoming event. He had left Canada in 1966, soon becoming a member of Buffalo Springfield in Los Angeles, then recording his self-titled debut solo album in 1968. That was followed by Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere with Crazy Horse, then Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Déjà vu in 1970 and his best-selling album After The Gold Rush. By the time Young came back to Canada for the Massey Hall concert, he had become one of the most exciting and successful singer-songwriters in rock.

Neil Young was performing solo that evening in Toronto, playing many of his well-known songs like "Down by the River," "Ohio" and "I Am a Child." But he also included several new originals that would be featured on his next new album, Harvest, which had not been released yet, like "Old Man," "The Needle and the Damage Done" and "Heart of Gold." The audience had not heard any of these before, and the night was an historic and moving performance for all.

"This is the album that should have come out between After The Gold Rush and Harvest," Young says now. "David Briggs, my producer, was adamant that this should be the record, but I was very excited about the takes we got on Harvest, and wanted Harvest out. David disagreed. As I listen to this today, I can see why."

Live At Massey Hall, produced by Young and the late David Briggs, is the second Reprise Records release in the Neil Young Archives Performance Series, following last year's Live At The Fillmore East album. Both are in anticipation of the Archives Volume I collection, due this fall. That 8-CD, 2-DVD audiobiography will include Young's music from 1963 to 1972, and feature a treasure trove of previously unreleased recordings, both studio and live, along with concert footage and rare memorabilia from the first decade of Neil Young's long and unequaled career.

Neil is the greatest. From his outstanding lyrics which rival those of Dylan, Hunter, and Lennon, to his masterful accoustic guitar licks and chords. From his Searing electric solos, which can be identified as only Neil from a mere note or two, to his many political stances, which among other thigs, helped end the war in Vietnam. this man is truly one of the most amazing artisans of te post-modern era, it's like readig Gulliver's Travels, while listening to Coltrane.

I can't wait to buy this disk. Was just listening to "Living with War" two hours ago. It's kind of amazing that he is still at the head of a peace movement 40 years later against injustices that continue to happen. I mean when are the artists of today going to step up and speak against the evil that is going on? I guess too many of their fans have turned into self-serving horde-mongers that just coincidentally like the music. Anyway, Neil is the man. Everything he does or has done is grate.
P.S. Let's Impeach the President!

You don't need anyone to tell you what to think hater, you'll just follow "your" president blindly to the brink of the Apocalypse and then wonder at how you got there. Do you really think we can "win" over there? Honestly? Then what is the solution? Give peace a chance.

PLEASE STOP HELPING DIVIDE THE COUNTRY!

Wasn't Bush 43 elected by a divided country?

"Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president."
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." ~Theodore Roosevelt

I can copy and post qoutes as well, But here are some from people that are alive and not living well in Iraq:

Wow! You’re not kidding; you sure can copy and paste! BTW, I didn’t copy and paste Teddy’s quotes – I was introduced to them years ago in junior high by my social sciences teacher (during the Watergate era.)

You will notice, however, that my quotes were supporting my response to your comment with regard to “our president.” I am not sure why you chose to post non-attributed “quotes” on a different subject. The quote attributed to the mayor of Fallujah is dated 2003 and may not be (as) relevant today, wouldn’t you agree?

hippiehater :: 2/18/2007 10:51 AM
See WINDOW it's easy anybody can cut and paste
here's one from a white skinned for all you racists

What appears to be difficult for you is copying and pasting germane information.

Are you calling me a racist because it appears I don’t share your fondness for Bush 43?

I am curious as to why you chose your username, and what your definition of “hippie” is.

You lost me...but, I'd like to compliment you on your eloquence. You did (could?) not, however, answer my questions.

This country was divided long before Bush 43 was elected for his second term. Why is Iraq a "just cause?" The United Nations (UN) stated that the United States' decision to go to war in Iraq without the approval of the UN Security Council was "illegal." In October 2002, Congress authorized Bush 43 to take military action in Iraq primarily because of what the administration charged was the threat of weapons of mass destruction. No such weapons were ever found after the March 2003 invasion, but the administration said United States troops would remain to help Iraq become a democracy. Bait and switch?

So, asking a question makes me judgemental? Disapproving of the war in Iraq makes me anti-American? What is your definition of a "burnout?" BTW, that vein is protruding from your temple again.

To get off politics, NEIL YOUNG VAULT RELEASE! Man, everything he touches turns to Gold. Solo, Buffalo, CSNY, everything. I've seen him with Crazy Horse, and they have a vibe. On another note, anyone who likes "Harvest" a lot has to check out his less-popular "On the Beach". It's got the same groove and was just re-released on CD a couple years back. Going from an election result indicating a divided nation to the extreme of a possible 100% result proves YOU don't think logically.

The quotes weren't memorized, but they were part of my point of view that it's ok to disagree with and question a president.

Looks like germane is a big word for YOU. And the vein was figurative!

Say hello to Sean, Bill, and Rush next time you see them.

Don't mind HippieHater, he's a piece of crap. Talks about loving everyone, no matter what race, etc. Meanwhile his nickname is HippieHater. Come out of your vietnam, war loving fantasy and realize that what's going on in Iraq is another Vietnam. Yeah let's stay there until 10,000 American soldiers are dead or more. That's what's going to happen if people like you and Bush help makes decisions for this country. Your oil loving president has no regard for human life. Do you pay attention to this war? It's a no win situation. Just be thankful that your not one of the thousands of parents and families who wasn't informed that your child, sister, brother, cousin, etc. was killed in that hell on earth in Iraq. There life taken way too early, in a war that has no meaning, no end and no peaceful ending.

Your FDR quote needs to be pout into context, however. It was made during his Address at Oglethorpe University in 1932. You left out a part of the quote: "The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation." He was not discussing a war. He also stated that "We need enthusiasm, imagination and the ability to face facts, even unpleasant ones, bravely."

Bush says he has a new plan, but it's the same old method. The unpleasant fact is that the US hasn't learned from our past, that we are now involved in a religious-based insurgency halfway around the world, and that we are less popular (and less influential) because of it.

I bet you don't have a problem with Iran and North Korea having nuclear weapons.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. You did hear the news that North Korea would abandon its nuclear program in exchange for oil worth $250 million?

Do we spend billions on other religious-based conflicts around the world? We didn't authorize military action due to Iraqi injustice. We (the US) claimed that genocide is taking place in the Sudan (only one recent example) -- why didn't we invade (by your logic?)

Why am I a coward, and how should I prove my bravery?

Hater, man, you're like the angel on my shoulder. Not the one with the halo, the other one. And while I don't agree with you on anything, I have to take your thoughts into consideration b/c they are valid. There is no easy end in sight.
Congress should have never gone along with this war, but after 9/11 they didn't want to seem unpatriotic. That is their mistake as our elected officials. Albeit late, it's good to see them take an aggressive stance towards getting our people home.
As far as Iraq, I can't believe anything W tells me. This administration is even more corrupt and secretive than Nixon's during Vietnam. It borders on criminal. Our civil liberties have tried to be taken away from us under the guise of "protection" (Patriot Act). The people of Iraq have my prayers, but theirs is not my war.

Alright HippieHater. Now shut the hell up. You're getting old. Your quotes are getting stale. You keep saying the same shit over and over. Stop quoting and get a mind of your own. Think for yourself. You don't impress anyone or make yourself look intelligent because you keep cut and pasting quotes every five minutes. You're a dumb bastard who just started this shit to get a rise out of people on this website. People who hate hippies don't hang out at Jambase.com. If you hate hippies then you hate Neil Young and why did you read this article in the first place? Neil Young is a self proclaimed hippie. He has stated it many times even during his most recent fantastic concert film "Prarie Wind". Quite obvious what your trying to do. Your inner child within gets off on going to websites to start crap with people who you know you can piss off. So go take your cut and pasting elsewhere. Nice try and keep talking using all your quotes, since you can think of anything for yourself. I think the rest of you should realize what HippieHater is trying to do and that's just get a rise out of you and start crap with people who he knows don't agree with him.

So if you believe non-sixties folks shouldn't consider themselves hippies (and I still haven't read your definition), then by your logic you shouldn't try to use quotes from others (such as JL) to prove a point because the intent of those words is different from your own current intent.

the new neil seems to be much more interesting than the "Live at the Filmore East" which sounds really great but doesn't hold that much intrigue after a few listens. Neil playing acoustic versions of songs during a period between albums "After the gold rush" and "Harvest" is a great intrigue. I suppose that will be proven out after I buy the cd/dvd and listen to it for a few times. I'll know for sure then as I expect it to be and what it obviously proves...it is true, Neil is up there in Godness.
