THE POLICE RETURN

The Police Confirm Grammy Reunion Performance

The Police
After much speculation, The Police, (Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, Sting) have confirmed plans to reunite as the opening band for the 49th annual Grammy Awards on February 11 in Los Angeles. The legendary trio has not performed since its 2003 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Although no further dates have been announced, the Grammy gig is expected to be the first of many shows taking the band around the world.

While not the biggest fan of Rock 'n Roll reunions, these guys are each still at the height of their talents. Funny, they must've forgotten how much they all hated each other. Would love to catch some of the Synchronicity material live, however. I'll apply for the loan now!

I swear I was watching the Synchronicity Live DVD from the Omni in 83' this past Friday and I seriously said to my girlfriend, wouldn't it be rad if they got back together and did a tour. Don't miss these guys!! I predict a Roxanne opener for the Grammy's, this is the 30th anniversary I think.

I dismissed the Police as a crappy pop act for a long time untill i got my hands on a bootleg recording of them playing live at the Hatfeild Polytechnec Shcool in '77. it is some of the hottest shit i have ever heard! the way they fused jamacan and punk groves and the heat and intensity they brought to the music moment to moment on the tape is unbelivable! even the songs that became hits were smoking hot!

whoever made this happen needs to be nominated for a nobel peace prize. how did this come about? any one got the scoop?

But then how am I supposed to decide between 10klf and Roo? I was at Bonnaroo last year and Oysterhead was great, just fantastic.

But, if the Cheese is playing a show at 10k then that's the place to be before they break up

Best reunion news ever! I think this is different than other "reunion tours" in that it is probably not motivated by money.Sting makes like $6000 a week in royalties from "Every Breath You Take".
Sting opened for the Grateful Dead in about 1986 and he definately knows how to jam. This might be enough to get me back to B'Roo.

odd and somehow sad that no matter the generation of the band in question, these reunions seem to dredge up a whole 'new' slew of fans---maybe that's why they keep happening?...anyway Grammys are now such a Hollywood show, the melodrama that became the Police (or vice-versa) is all too appropriate...or to put it simplyL F%&& 'em!

i know that my opinion will not be popular, but i agree with N.W.A.....f@#k tha police. i've never been a fan of these guys. yea, i know that sting can thump his bass, and stewart is a damn talented drummer, and the guitar guy (whoever he is) can play a nice little solo....but the whole punk-rock lite meets cheesy new-wave vibe just doesn't do it for me. if there's one reunion from that era that i could get behind it's the talking heads. oh yea, stings solo stuff is garbage (including desert rose).

im sticking to my comment. im very aware of how many great trio's there have been (primus is a good call). u can throw cream out the window though, just 3 white brits trying imitate southern blues. clapton plays more covers than panic anyway. the police created amazing original music as a trio in an era when cheap, shitty music was the norm. its pretty cool that no one has challenged that The Band of Gypsies is probably the best ever.

Great news! I've been waiting to hear this for a long time. They sounded great at the Rock n'roll HOF in '03. I expect an amazing reunion. I agree about the power trio, Gypsies comment.
As for Ween, they are a REAL rock band, unlike that wuss-wook crap sci pumps(i.e. farts) out. I don't think Ween has ever tried to get "jam" fans, you can thank phish for that in covering their great songs.

I don't question whether or not if Ween is a REAL rock band. They are unique and therefore I respect them as artists. Their presence at Bonnaroo 2002, Vegoose 2005 & Vegoose Late Night 2005 indicate some interest in cashing in on the demographic that attends these "jam" festivals.

My second concert ever was the Police at Shea Stadium (Syncronicity tour), Joan Jet and REM opened up. I enjoyed a few Foster's oil cans in the back of the station wagon taking me there until we got stuck in traffic on the White Stone Bridge for over an hour, I still remember how much my bladder hurt. It had been raining so the tarps were on the field; many of us enjoyed them as if they were giant slip and slides. Good times; Steu is just a brilliant, innovative, burning drummer, I hope he and Sting don't kill each other before they make their stop near me (Jones Beach possibly?)Hope "Walking On the Moon" makes the repertoire.

Police - Groundbreaking. Revolutionary.
Primus - Demigods of the underworld. Spine transfusional.
Phish - Magical transcendence. Collectice cerebral manipulation.
Oysterhead - One of the goddamn stupidest bands I have ever heard in my entire fuckin' life. Set at Roo was HORRID last year. Stop suckin dicks and actually listen to the music people. It's OK to think that something Trey or Les does sucks. Really.

Oysterhead = 3 musicians that are absolute monsters at their respective instuments, making, IMO, boring uninspired music. I saw them once. I believe it was the day before halloween. I left after about an hour and a half. To this day one of the worst shows I've ever seen. However, I am completely psyched for a police reunion. I will pay whatever they want me to.

i've seen phish many many times, but i've never seen oysterhead. their songs are a little strange, but that album rocks. it's definately not something i play very often, but i would assume it's funkier then trey solo. I love Trey and have traveled over 1,000 miles at a time, caught many multiple night shows, and revolved my entire schedule around Phish. Trey solo has it's moments, but is very cheesy at times. I just thought Oysterhead is funkier, then TAB.
As for Ween. They would kick SCI's ass. Those guys do sound like stale farts. Maybe they'll sound better without Bill Nershi. They would be lucky if they could get Keller to play with them.

While a reunion performance by The Police at the Grammy Awards in L.A. February 11 is big news, the really big story will come the next day.
The band will hold a morning press conference February 12 at L.A.'s famed Whiskey a Go Go, where they will announce what is being called "really big news" and will also perform a few songs.
Although the exclusive event is for industry and media only, L.A. radio station 93.1 Jack FM is holding a contest that will grant a few listeners a chance to attend.
The blogs have been buzzing for weeks about possible dates for a summer tour by The Police, and fans have been awaiting an official announcement. While Pollstar's sources have been extremely tight-lipped about exactly what really big news the band will announce at the Whiskey, it's a safe bet fans won't be waiting after Monday.

The only reason why the jamband faithful act like they care about this Police reuinon is only because Stewart Copeland play with Trey and Claypool. If Oysterhead got some nobody drummer to play with them. This conversation about a Police reunion wouldn't even be topic of conversation.

I know I am responding quite late, but how can we let stuhooper get away with this comment, "u can throw cream out the window though, just 3 white brits trying imitate southern blues. clapton plays more covers than panic anyway" ?!! The members of CREAM are quite possibly the 3 baddest motherfuckers to ever take the stage together. Lord, if Clapton would ever play with 1/5 of the intensity he did with CREAM he'd still be relevant. And Jack Bruce? The greatest lead bassist ever. Yes, Claypool is amazing, but he's still technically working on the rhythm. Bruce plays lead almost exclusively. Make no mistake, Clapton was phenomenal, but this was Jack Bruce's band. Oh, and then there's Ginger Baker, one of the 1st to incorporate polyrhythmic afro-cuban beats in rock and roll. Listen to some CREAM bootlegs. They all just solo all the time but manage to stay cohesive. It's mindblowing. Although I'm a fan of southern blues, I've sure as hell never heard anything from Blind Lemon Jefferson that sounded anything like N.S.U. or Tales of Brave Ulysees. stuhooper, have you ever listened to CREAM?
