It's not Lollapalooza/MTV Fest./Woodstock 96or99 - so that's a good thing that they won't be there. They should keep Bonnaroo as low key as possible to keep the good vibes. Pearl Jam just don't really fit the bill. I'm not depressed, so they don't really suit me. That's just my $.02. Peace.

This is just the first of several bands that were "leaked" that will not be at Bonnaroo. A whole bunch of folks got scammed into believing that list.

I dig pearl jam. Id like to see them live some day but i dont think I would like to spend a whole weekend camping out with the mainstream rock audience they would draw to the event. I dont mean to be an elitist or anything like that - I have always been more interested in shows that draw the jam culture fans because we put effort into the quality of our enviorment in a way that the mass media rock fan often does not. does this make sense to anyone?

I feel the whole "wouldn't want to spend a weekend w/ that crowd" vibe, but in every scene there are some bad apples. At the first Bonneroo in '02, I was a Campground/Festival area "peace keeper". Not security, just a fan driving a golf cart getting paid to make sure everyone was doin' O.K., and even though I had a wonderful time, some other workers were'nt so lucky. I heard some horrific stories and considered myself lucky.
As a band, Pearl Jam is no longer main stream in my opinion, they have their loyal fan base, a few first timers and that's pretty much it. They also don't play the same songs in the exact same way every night, Eddie is one of the best improv vocalists around today... Always keeps it real...

I diagree w/ EVILFUNK & redplate. I've seen PJ 3 times now, and I've NEVER had any bad encounters w/ the crowd. PJ fans are NOT your mainstream rock crowd, in fact they're just as devoted to their band and live music as us "jammers." Yes, it's hard to get tix, but that's due to their devoted, respectable, passionate fans, which we can all relate to.
I hate to make the contrast, but I've run into more assholes at Phish shows than at PJ shows, so go figure.
Granted, I'm sure someone can share an asshole story about a PJ show too, but my point is the PJ crowd and scene in general is comparable to any jam band scene out there.
In fact, I hate to say it, but I would have to say the Pearl Jam scene is one of the least tainted ones I've encountered.
Can't wait to see them again soon....

I'd rather hang with the Pearl Jam crowd than the middle-aged yuppies The Police will bring in if the play. Not that there is anything wrong with The Police, but if you are going with which crowd...

PJs crowd is just normal folks. I've been to two of their concerts in the past 3 years. It's not like they are a neo-nazi punk band or scandanavian death metal band.

pearl jam is great, but i wouldn't say they are a good match for Radiohead as this year's wildcard headliner...but then again, who is?

yeah, everyone and their mom also thought tool might be headlining one night this year, which all basically started cuz trey said he'd like to see them headline bonnaroo in rolling stone. i doubt anything was ever even considered between bonnaroo and tool.

however, i did hear that someone one sirius ANNOUNCED that the police would be headlining. still could just be a rumor and the guy might have just jumped the gun. we'll find out feb 14th. prolly won't goto bonnaroo this year anyways tho.

Pearl Jam NOT playing Bonnaroo is Bonnaroo's loss. PJ is one of the best, if not the best, live bands of this era. Have the negative posters actually seen the band?

Generalizing about mainstream fans of Pearl Jam (who in fact has a fairly small, hard core group of improv music fans) is pretty ignorant. Pearl Jam WAS mainstream in 1992! Then they walked away from the spotlight, quit making videos, toured only non-Ticketmaster venues and avoided most publicity functions.

The guys are also one of the most eco-friendly and politically active (for liberal causes) bands around. Dissing PJ for being crass and mainstream is just about as intelligent as the right wingers calling jamband fans a bunch of smelly hippies.

hm....good points ufizi - also, great pic!

one thing about pearl jam is that they were standing strong against ticketmaster. i love that. how cool can you get?

i think that if more of the newer jambands were focusing on tearing the walls down with hot origonal music (like the GD or Phish did) and doing good buisiness (again...GD, Phish) there would be more of these kind of acts to hire at boneroo. is jam dead? did a bong kill jam?

folks - sound off if you care to >>>who DESERVES the throne? who has enough marketing potential and is working for the gold? i think 'Panics time has come musically and otherwise and if boneroo hires them and the police id give them ~SOME~ props. perhaps even an award!

I don't know what the f**k y'all are talking about, saying PJ wouldn't fit in and that 'Panic deserves this mythical "throne"...

Sorry to break it to ya, but:
1. Pearl Jam jam out, and jam out HARD, they just manage to fit it nicely into 4-6 minute time frames.
2. Pearl Jam's audience is not TOO different from the jam scene, and I, for one, have MANY friends who crossover, for sure.
3. Widespread Panic had their chance during the "first" hiatus, and it came and went (for that matter, so did SCI, moe., and at the time, the young UM) = NO ONE will replace Phish, face the music kidz.

ALL THAT BS ASIDE, I am kinda sad they won't be there. I think Eddie V. would use that HUGE stage very well to wake some kidz the f**k up and make them more aware about:
1. How much we suck for letting the current administration back in and
2. Just HAVE SOME FUN!

I was really hoping for Pearl Jam. I am sick of hearing the same people bitch about Bonnaroo having a diverse lineup instead of the same 30 jam bands playing. Bonnaroo is different. It's not a jam festival. It's a music festival, and if you try to pull in 80000 people every year, String Cheese will not cut it. Pearl Jam draws 40000+ with no radio, no MTV, and no big publicity. Anyway, I hope the announcement has someone else who can do more than "jam" for hours at a time.

If you want to hear nothing but jam bands, and nothing else, find another festival and quit bitching about Bonnaroo.

Zander, Eddie V's political commentaries have no place at a
"music" festival. Let him save that for a Hillary rally. That's the problem with these "liberal activists" they use any forum to promote their adjenda. Let a music festival be a music festival and leave the political commentaries for a more fitting time.
That said, I think PJ would be a better fit than Tom Petty and just as good a fit as Radio Head. (Both of which kept me from Bonnaroo for the first time.)
I'm not sure what type of event Superfly wants Bonnaroo to but on things for sure, they want it to make money.

I agree with most of the posters here, Pearl Jam is great, and have always been geared in the right direction with what they want to do with their music and influence without being pretentious about it. Do the Evolution live in front of 80,000 would kick my ass, I don't know about ya'll. I too love jamband music and that's why I go to festivals like Rusa and Rado and Summercamp, etc. If Bonnaroo is choosing to get a wider variety of great music exposure I think that's great. You can't really complain about a direction a festival is choosing to head in terms of musical taste, you could just not connect as strongly to that music and find somewhere else to go. I'll admit that the sparsity of loose, improvisational, inventive, exploratory jam music at last year's Bonnaroo kind of bummed me out too(though superjam, umph, soulive, ivan neville's dumstaphunk, toubab krewe all kicked ass), and think what's so great and underappreciated by popular culture about jam music is the spontanaeity ands pertinence to the current moment when being played (rather than reciting pre-rehearsed\recorded music), but I guess not everyone can see that or chooses to and, hey, worse ignorances are out there. Hopefully Cheese will hit up one of the festies this summer, that's all I got to say.

What a bunch of wankers you all are! Same shit everyday. I would rather hang out with Pearl Jam fans than Phish kids anyday. Pearl Jam fans would be there for the music. Phish kids would only be there for the pissing contest. A desperate attempt to argue superior musical greatness when confronted with obvious inadequecies.

Wake the fuck up, especially dudes like Zander. Phish ain't the greatest band ever, not from a business standpoint or musical standpoint. There is more to life and music than Phish vs whomever. I know its hard to conceive, but Phish really had no impact on anybody but Phish kids. Sorry, but its true. I'll face the music and acknowledge that no one will replace Phish. No band will ever perform such mediocre shows and yet have a fan base as in far in denial as the Phish kids.

Why anybody who claims to like live music would complain about having Pearl Jam at your gig is beyond me.

Third and lastly... Mediocre Shows? First of all, i'll ignore the fact that that's an opinion.. second, you would think that the reason that Phish has such a hardcore fan base is because their shows are MORE that mediocre..

Bonnaroo is nothing more than a corporate sponsored arena for drug dealers. The camping is horrible and the scene is even worse. I love festivals, but Bonnaroo is more like MTV Spring Break on acid. I'm sure any other festival going this summer will top it.

If Phish is the last great band for my whole life than life will suck.

I agree that Widespread never could make it until Phish disapeared. Why do you think that Widespread fans wear the Phucking Quitters shirts. They couldn't even sell out large clubs outside of Atlanta until Phish disapeared. Phish breaking up made their career.

Isn't it funnt that even though college only lasts four years many of us freeze our musical tastes in time because we feel we have to grow up.

Coachella is filled with grown up music. It sucks. I believe in Umpohrey's, Bisco, Tea leaf, and a band yet to be named.

DOn't get me wrong if Phish comes back it will raise the quality of music. Because instead of using Widespread as a jusdge for how good a band a truly transcending band will raise the bar.

"Who knows why" is a putz because Bonnaroo filled up when it was a Jamband scene and all the clones wanted to be part of it, but they neede their simple minded music wityh them because they wear it like a uniform, they can predict it and therefgor control their reaction to it.

Did anyone ever notice that if you mention a mainstream band people just say they don't like it, but if you mention a JAm Band they try to erase all eveidence of it, look down on you, insult you and do everything possible to destroy it.

Coachella has NEVER invited a Jamband because those tools are so close minded. They hide it by saying our scene is closed minded. The only difference is we invite and sometimes enjoy mainstream acts to our festivals, but Coachella would consider it sacriliege.

They need everything to be defined by genre (Reggae, Rock, Country) so they're puny brains can keep up with it. Some people need to be told what to think from the record companies and insist on calling it cool because others agree with it. All sheep eat grass, that doesn't make grass good food.

I'll gnaw in their skulls because it still hasn't gotten weird enough for me.

The jam scene is always finding a way. As bonnaroo has become larger, other festivals have sprung up. Acutally I don't even like to call it a jam scene to begin with. Most bands within the scene wonder how they were labeled as jam anyway: e.g. Galactic. I am a fan of professional music. Let Bonnaroo die out, in terms of jamness if it is not staying up to the "JAM" par. Go see other festivals: Jazzfest(day and night shows), Langerado, Wanee, Down at the Farm are other fests I have been to that hold the professional or jam torch. Others that I have heard are good are High Sierra, Telluride, etc.

First of all...I think the "Justin Timberlake at Bonnaroo" jokes are getting a little old. Sure '06 had some pretty shitty music, but what I remember seeing is Dr. John, Presevation Hall Band, Buddy Guy, and Kentucky Thunder (Plus Herbie Hancock, Doc Watson, Peter Rowan, Taj Mahal, and Earl Scruggs, who have all played in recent years)...not exactly pop radio. Radiohead and Tom Petty weren't very good headliners, but fucking WSP and SCI would've been just as bland. The 'Roo definitely took a giant leap backwards last year, but it still had some bitchin' music that was out of the norm from the myriad of other cookie-cutter "jamband" festivals.

Second...Fuck Pearl Jam! They would've been a worse choice than Radiohead. Them not being there just increases my chances for Ratdog, perhaps followed by Hot Tuna, Sam Bush, and the Taj Mahal Trio...

Probably not though...I'm planning on being much more disappointed come Feb. 14 than I was last year at this time

I think everyone one who says Pearl Jam would be bad for Bonnaroo has the wrong prospective of the band. If you haven't listened to the band since 1991, then you've missed out on some incredible music. And they're one of the best live bands out there if not ever. They may not be a full fledged jam band, but they have many elements of a jam band: different set lists every night, covers, improvs, 3 hour shows, 10 minute jams, song segues, countless covers, guest appearances, etc. You never know what to expect at a show and the band gets the crowd more into the show than any band I've ever seen. It's unfortunate they're not playing there this year, but I'm sure they will in the near future.

I don't usually respond to these gang rants, but some of you are just such "headie" little morons. Pearl Jam is awesome and they would have added to Bonnaroo. They stand for everything most of the people on this sight believe in, and oh by the way, THEY BRING IT. I love 20 minutes jams as much as the next person, but there is other music out there. I'd go see Pearl Jam over 90% of the bands that are now inhabiting this scene. it's fun and they rock. Going through life trying to be the uberest hippie out there is a tired act. Get over yourselves and have fun.

ALRIGHT I WILL AGREE WITH EVERYONE WHO SAYS ROO '05 WAS LACKING MUSIC WISE. BUT DR. JOHN AND IVAN NEVILLE'S DUMPSTAFUNK WERE TWO SHOWS THAT I WAS GLAD TO CATCH. BOTH WHILE THE SUPER JAM WAS GOING ON. SEEN MIKE, TREY AND THE DUO EARLIER IN THE SUMMER. DON'T GET ME WRONG THAT SHOW WAS GREAT TO BUT THE DUMPSTAFUNK SHOW WAS WILD. CAPPING IT ALL OFF GRACE POTTER SAT IN ON THE HAMMOND B-3, INSANE. HOPEFULLY SUPERFLY REALIZED THAT THE SING-A-LONG WITH TOM PETTY AND RADIOHEAD WAS VERY WRONG AND THEY WILL GET BACK TO WHAT MADE THEM THE BIGGEST GROSSING FESTIVAL IN THE COUNTRY. BRING BACK PANIC, STS9(SHOWS TILL THE SUNRISES), KELLER, SOULIVE, OYSTERHEAD, GALACTIC, ROBERT RANDOLPH AND THE OTHERS WHO GRACED THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF ROO. BECAUSE ROO IS ABOUT AN HOUR AWAY FROM ME I HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT TICKETS AND WILL PROBABLY BE THERE FOR MANY YEARS TO COME AS LONG AS THE MUSIC IS GOOD AND THE COPS DON'T START ACTING LIKE THE LAWERNCE, KS POLICE. HOPE THE LINEUP IS UP TO PAR WITH THE EARLY YEARS OF ROO THEN I WILL BE ANXIOUS TO GET TO JUNE. SEE EVERYONE IN JUNE ON THE FARM.

i personally don't care ethier way. Pearl Jam is good, not one of my favorites, but a good band. Thier music is not the kind I would want to hear at a festy. I want to hear music that makes me dance and feel happy. I don't want to hear some hairy dude ranting about the "scandals and tyrants of our administration". Pearl Jam's songs are great, I've always loved Vitalogy and that song about bugs, but they're dark and depressing songs. When I'm standing beneath the Tennessee sun or moon I want to feel love and happiness so that I can groove.

wow put on your waders because the shit is getting DEEP! of course taste in music IS nothing but opinion but most of the ones i hear are ca-razy! first off let me say that i enjoy a WIDE variety of music... i love radiohead , pearl jam , phish , gd , zappa , black sabbath , beasties , g love , taj , los lobos.......and about a million more including petty and dylan! YOU , and u know who you r , CANNOT talk smack about these guys because u have zero foundation for the argument that dylan is dead or pj is mainstream . pj would not play bonnaroo cause broo is a JOKE!they have too high of standards - that would be THEM selling out! any how its all opinions anyway but if you really love music try some different stuff ! go see live music ! dont be a lemming in a sea of lemmings. oh yeah and i think a concert is the perfect place for liberal rantings and whoever said otherwise is a violator of free speech ! F bush!!! F rummy ! F the whole damn system ! IT IS BROKEN!!!!!!!!!

I am going to guess that the folks on this board who are over 30 are the PJ fans and the ones who are dissing the band are probably under 25 and have never seen Pearl Jam. It's okay we don't need to let the kiddies in on the fact that Pearl Jam put on the best rock show, by far, of any rock bands out there today aside from seeing Neil with Crazy Horse. Even then it comes close. I have been to hundreds of shows starting at age 14, I am now 32 and I have seen it all Neil Young, Grateful Dead, Phish, The Who, Dave Matthews, Wilco, and on and on from large arena shows to tons of smaller club shows. I just saw Pearl Jam on their last tour in San Francisco in 2006 and it was hands down the best ROCK show I have ever been too and that's saying a lot after seeing the Dead, Neil and Wilco over 30 times each and I love those guys.
The PJ fans contributed hugely to the vibe at these shows and it was just intense. Non stop high energy without a down moment , with the fans hanging on every word and note. I don't even know why I am choosing to post this as I like the fact that I can now go see Pearl Jam at smaller venues than you could for so many years. It's true it is all just opinions , one matters as much as the next, but I GUARANTEE if any of the naysayers actually went to a Pearl Jam show they would become an instant fan. That's my unimportant two cents.

The anticipation is killer. Pearl Jam is great live and they wouldve rocked bonnaroo as long as they didn't get up on the soapbox. This clears the way for Axl Rose's bonnaroo debut. Now that would suck way more than Pj.

Pearl Jam = best live band i've ever seen (besides Phish of course)

anybody who says they don't belong at Bonnaroo can eat shit. If Radiohead belongs there than certainly Pearl Jam does.

but if they were only missing it to play the southeast U.S.

that would be a unique concept. I haven't seen them since the vote for change tour in 2004. I'm starting to get restless guys!

bonnaroo, langarado, and all good are all the same. Different style lineups. Bonnaroo is definalty the most fun festival ive been to by far. It has the best vibes, the most bands, and tons of intresting people. No matter were u are there is always custys, newbies, and fake people. And for every doosh bag there is another cool person u should talk to. So enjoy all the big commercial festivals were there still there, and goto all the small festies. peace

Welp.... All i can say is if you Hippies don't like Bonnaroo the way it's been for the last couple of years you haven't been the last couple years... They have made so many strides to make the festival as easy going, clean and enjoyable as possible. Yeah it's getting harder to get away with the headies but it's not Bonnaroo, it's the F-ing Cops... As far as music goes, You can't see all the bands so what's the point of having 60 of the same bands there. Tom Petty is a legend, Radiohead is more inventive and revolutionary than half the bands we listen to and Phil Lesh was there last year (along with the Super Jam) Plus did you ever think that since Bonnaroo has worked (unlike every Woodstock) they have actually been able to bring in bigger names. So quit giving Bonnaroo a bad rap. Those people work all year to put together the best all around experience for everyone not just jam fans. If you ask me you're (the complainers) selling yourself short if you don't take time to appreciate what Bonnaroo does give you. From what i've heard and seen nobody does what Bonnaroo does.. A small city is erected for 4 days with "human beings" (whom some may be different)coexisting together selling stuff, sharing porto potty's, meeting new people and having fun. If dont' want to step out of your "Hippie" stereotype you're no different than the hardcore goth or punk kids.

P.S. If Superfly was in it for the money they would keep putting up the same bands every year (that make way less per show than Radiohead and Tom Petty) and still charge you $200. Open your eyes they are trying to represent all music.

Bonnaroo is for the birds (I went to the 1st and third one). I'm glad somebody with Pearl Jam's "realness" isn't playing a corporate slave trap like that...

Think about it; Manchester,TN, middle of June, No Trees; over priced tickets, and a two mile walk to the venues if you get there the night before the show...its called being played for a fool. Why do you think its there (bumfuck TN), at that time (june), with no relief for the people? $$$$$$$$

If you want a real festival, then go to smilefest. Bonnaroo is not a festival; its walmart with drugs. Deal with it :)

We are all excited. Can't wait to see where will we spend our money.
Music sould intergrate and intertwine. Bonnaroo does turn me on to new stuff every year.
Peace, Byrd
P.s. PJ would have been great, bring on the ELTON!

I hate PJ. I have seen them and they sucked. No offence. I'm entitled to my opinion as well. They would fit the Bonnaroo venue because Roo has changed SO much since the first few years. It's unfortunate but lucky I have many other festies to get to that are right up my alley. No bitching here. Have a blast at ever show you go to...even if it does suck. :)

...thats some funny shit! thanks...perfectly put.

some of the things people say here about Pearl Jam make me want to see them more...what would i do if i had a verry popular band? sue t-master if i could...seek venues and promoters who dont work with them and people like them...thats good stuff! but,,,,,in tent city? why cant the Allman Bros headline? Panic? 'roo used all natural gormet jam to get our attention and now they are slipping us jelly...corn syrup, yellow 40, 41 and 42...

ARU in the spring of '91 was the best band i have ever seen live....i wonder how a PJ performance would rate for me?...

I can't believe how delusional some of the Phish fans on here are. So which band has sold out Red Rocks more? I'm pretty sure Panic started that in Phish's heyday. MSG, UNO Lakefront, and quite a few others. All this and no dresses or Hell's Angels beatings!

I would love to see eddie sip on some wine and poor his soul out to the bonnaroo festival. Get off your elitist hippie thrones. Stop eating grilled cheese, you trust fund "hippies".

Well...I must say. I was at Bonnaroo two years ago and as I walked through the camp sites I heard pearl jam playing approxiamately 5 different times. Jack Johnson also covered Pearl Jam's "Soon Forget" during his set as well as Gov't Mule. I think PJ would fit right into the line up.
As for their fans...Pearl Jam fans are some of the most loyal in all of rock. They travel from show to show because no one Pearl Jam show is like the next. They mix up the set everynight and jam out there solos. Not to mention Eddie Vedder always has genius things to say a few times during the night. Pearl Jam is rock yes..but it's much more than that. I think everyone should have the pleasure of seeing them. I'm a huge jam band fan but Pearl Jam somehow always sticks out as the band I want to see live the most. It's a great experience. just sayin...

Instead of venting at each other and complaining to US about how lame and commercial Roo has become, COMPLAIN TO THEM. I did after last years line-up and show. Send them an e-mail and make your opinions known to the corporate folks that run the festival. It may do absolutly no good, but then again....

never had the opportunity to go to bonnaroo... seen the live dvds too many times to mention. all i can say is, i love the festie as much as anybody else, love to get down with my hippie self, but pearl jam rocks. and anyone who stopped listening after 10 or has only heard the shit on the radio is seriously lacking in good musical taste.

Okay, I liked PJ back around the Ten days. I have listened very little other than on the radio, but always had a lot of respect for them. Well, long story short, I borrowed their live DVD from a friend and it is an awesome live show. There are jams (albeit short ones), good covers, and good songwriting all there. Also, I had kind of forgotten that grunge came to be popular for its anti-pop approach. Those bands had the same commitment to artistry that we find today in the jamworld. So bring em on in 08! Would love to see some guest spots sprinkled all over the festival.
