THE VOLTA'S NEW DRUMMER

Thomas Pridgen by John Spragens Jr.
The Mars Volta have been changing drummers more frequently than heads on tour change underwear. First it was Jon Theodore replaced by Blake Fleming. Then we had Deantoni Parks at Vegoose, and now it appears we have a new skin master to stare at, mouth agape.

While there has been no official announcement, the new drummer for The Mars Volta is rumored to be drumming prodigy Thomas Pridgen. Pridgen is the youngest drummer ever to be sponsored by Zildjian Cymbals (10 years old), he's toured with Dennis Chambers conducting drum clinics, and did we mention The Volta want him?

Confirmation from the band is expected soon. On the Volta's MySpace page they have Pridgen listed as an official band member:

Band Members:
Omar A Rodriguez-Lopez
Cedric Bixler Zavala
Juan Alderete
Isaiah Ikey Owens
Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez
Adrian Terrazas
Pablo Hinojos-Gonzalez
Thomas Pridgen

The following video should answer any and all questions in regards to Pridgen's talent.

Pridgen is ridiculous. My drummer had a video of him and Dennis Chambers playing together. He was like 14 at the time, and they were trading off rolls like it was nobody's business. It seems weird that, being the in-demand session player that im sure he is, that he would join a pop act and look to tour. Talent like this never needs to leave the studio. I guess it's a refreshing feeling then, and more power to him! go get 'em tiger...

This dude is nuts, he would fit well i think. I hope he can bring back the de-loused feeling again, that album seemed more drum-orientated than the other albums.
Why did jon theodore leave the mars volta again?

pridgen is disgusting!!!!! frankly i am a little shocked about the pairing of he and the Volta, but this kid defines music resiliency.

any of those who doubt if he can lay down a groove? all i got's to say is check out Christian Scott "Rewind That."

any doubt then, consult smith & wesson, or your local evangelical brain washing clinic

Why are people impressed with this guy? If I saw a different video I might be blown away but it was like a flurry of 32nd notes just displaced everywhere..... I don't give a damn how fast he is. Control and groove are where it's at. I dig way more on Zach Velmer (STS9) Lane Shaw (Pnuma Trio) Darren (New Deal) Dave Brogan (ALO) or the good old days of Jon FIshman (I better not have to tell you who..hehe). I think it is cool that this kid has all those accolades but I want to see a drummer manhandle beats and not just play fast.

Volta rocks, they got booed at chili peppers show in cleveland by a bunch of bankers and soccer moms. They should tour on their own with this guy.

You can't judge this 'drum solo' clip to show his strength as a sick pocket player. check these clips out, where he is playing with other musicians, and hear how he holds the groove....

This kid has talent that surpasses a LOT of the drummers out there in this scene right now. How he applies it with the Volta will be interesting to see, but alas, it's good that we got him on "our" side.

"I think it is cool that this kid has all those accolades but I want to see a drummer manhandle beats and not just play fast."

Huh?!?!?! I guess Vic Wooten is just too fast, as well.

Look in order to do what T. Pridgen is doing in this clip, albeit extremely fast is just as synchopated and disciplined. Break it down. Do the rudiments. Or don't comment.

This should go great with the Volta!!

Solos are just that...solos. Thomas would not be playing with MV if he could not hold a solid groove. And he certainly is talented enough to play clinics with Dennis Chambers. As far as him being a studio guy, after his time with the Volta he can command triple scale and I bet this current gig pays FAR more than any of the studio stuff he is doing now. Money is not everything, but if you earn a living playing music, better pay is great, no?

jon theodor is still light years better ,who cares how many endorsements he's (spragens)got ,just because he gets free stuff dosn't make him better than anyone ,you cant replace the soul of jon theodor! he was mars volta !so zildjian gave(spragens) him some free cymbals at 10 years old ,whats that suppose to prove, they will never replace jon theodor impossible !its like replacing john bonham in zep IMPOSSIBLE SORRY FOLKS,,,,,drum clinics are boring ,

I just hope the volta keeps droppin' the fury! If the beat keeper is anything like their drummers of the past then there is no worry. Much love!

Woah, Woah, Mars Volta-Definately not pop music, progressive mabye, avant garde yes, insane definately, but not pop. I was very sad when i heard that Jon was leaving the Volta, but this recent news has aleviated that sadness, Thomas is a perfect plug for the hole that was created in the Volta when Jon left!

Whoever here thinks Pridgen can't groove better listen up.
Dude's got serious groove and chops. He can play in any setting you put him in. I seen him in some local gigs a few years back when he just turned 16 yrs. He can be ferociously wild or can lay back and play the simplest fattest grooves. He's got intensity and sensitivity. The
Mars Volta gig should be good for him for awhile...but I'm hopin' he moves on to some newer ground.
I hope the next Volta drummer is Ronald Bruner jr.
He can do it all, too.
