GRATEFUL GARCIA GATHERING

By Alan Hess
"There Ain't Nothing Like A Grateful Garcia Gathering", and with a warm summer just six months away, the bus is up and running again! Its next stop will be the Grateful Garcia Gathering 2007 being held once again on August 2 - August 5. The 3G's will celebrate and pay tribute to the life, art, and music of legendary guitarist Jerry Garcia on what would be his 65th Birthday.

This music and camping festival will once again take place at the picturesque Camp NCN Campground located in beautiful Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The campground features 60-plus acres of brilliant surroundings with tall trees that shade your camp site. For your fishing, swimming, and water sports pleasures we have a five-acre natural spring fed lake with sandy beaches, modern bathroom facilities with showers, and other luxurious accommodations.

Campers will be able to have campfires at each individual campsite and firewood is available at the campground! There will be plenty of awesome vendors on-site for you to check out, a kind and friendly atmosphere, and a stellar musical lineup for all to enjoy! In addition, there is going to be a memorabilia "Jerry Garcia Shrine" near the main stage. All attendees are encouraged to bring pictures, candles, ticket stubs, tie-dyes, old posters with Jerry's signature, any and all related items related to Jerry Garcia, or the Grateful Dead! You can place it at the shrine for all to enjoy!

Festival attendees will be able to enjoy the sounds of local and regional bands who were influenced or inspired by The Grateful Dead such as, Waterband, Baghdad Scuba Review, Bowser, Grateful Beth & The Volunteers, Jana Holland, Covert Operations, Macyn Taylor, The Northwoods Band, The Weavils, Bar Tab Band, Run Side Down, and many more bands! We are also opening a second stage for more live music to fill the air! All these bands will all be performing their own original tunes, plus a few covers of The Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band. All this, in tribute and honoring of Jerry Garcia, which will also mark the 12th Anniversary of his untimely passing. Singer/Songwriter Bear, will emcee and perform in between set-ups and take-downs of the performers. In addition, there will be a very special fireworks display for this exciting weekend of camping, music, friendships, harmony and love!

The real thrill of the Grateful Garcia Gathering is the return of Melvin Seals & JGB for TWO NIGHTS! The 3G's just wouldn't be complete without a musical cohort and true friend of Jerry's to be part of these wonderful festivities. Melvin Seals, longtime friend, vocalist and organist of JGB and The Jerry Garcia Band from 1980-1995, will headline the first two nights of the gathering, August 3-4. The vision of the Grateful Garcia Gathering is to keep the spirit of Jerry Garcia's music alive by bringing the music and the Deadhead fans together as family!

Opening for Melvin Seals & JGB (For Two Nights) is the Grateful Dead's Donna Jean Godchaux, Mookie Siegel of the David Nelson Band (and formerly a member of both Phil & Friends and Ratdog), Wendy Lanter of Hope in Time, and Jeff Mattson, Tom Circosta, Klyph Black and Dave Diamond, all of the Zen Tricksters, now create music together as "Donna Jean and The Tricksters."

MoonAlice is a powerful and talented bunch of musicians many of you have seen and heard jamming throughout jamband scene! This new band will open be opening for "Donna Jean and The Tricksters," featuring Roger & Ann McNamee, Barry Sless (pedal steel and lead guitarist from the David Nelson Band, Phil Lesh and Friends, Kingfish, Cowboy Jazz, The Rowan Brothers (Peter, Lorin & Chris), Pete Sears (Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship, Hot Tuna, John Lee Hooker, Steve Kimock, Jerry Garcia), G.E. Smith ( click link http://www.greenmirror.com/gebio.html ), Jimmy Sanchez (Dr. John, Roy Rogers, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Tom Waits, Boz Scaggs). Lots of musical talent in this band!

Boris Garcia(For Two Nights) will be opening for "MoonAlice." Here's what Dennis McNally (Bob Weir and Ratdog publicist) had to say about Boris Garcia: "During my 25 years with Grateful Dead Productions, I listened to a lot of jamming, both electric and acoustic. Recently, though I still work with Bob Weir, I've been approached by a fair number of bands to help them, and have usually not been moved enough by the music to say yes - until I heard Boris Garcia. They fuse a bluegrass/country/folk sound with a jazzy rock improvisation mode and really excellent songwriting. Some say it reminds them of Tom Petty, others of old Byrds. Either way, I like them, and want to share them with my larger family. So here y'are!"

sdl I think your priorities are out of whack! The gathering is aboout celebrating Jerry's life with those who owe him for being such an influence! If you cant see that then you are a music snob, that needs not be at such a celebration of a man that is obviously beyond your ability of understanding! You are the same old burn out, has been wanna be head, that needs to be OFF the SCENE! I am so glad your not gunna be there! there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This sounds way cool, and for that price being a minnesota resident is a must do. I never been to a dead show but I have loved and respected Jerry Garcia and his great music for a few years. I gotta bring my art work to share, jerry's work is a big insparation to me.
Its kind of ironic that I found the greatful to garcia movie at my work 2 days ago then they post this, its my destiny.

I went to this last year along with many other events after a 6 week vacation of traveling around the country. It was unbelievable to say the least. It was the first time I saw Melvin Seals and The JGB. What amazing shows they were. With the line up for this year, who won't go. I will be going to this event for the rest of my life, that's for sure:)
PEACE EVERYBODY

GGG is always a blast!!!! The midwest has some of the best bands and the best festivals that a lot of people don't know about. Wouldn't mind seeing Chinese Fingertrap this year. Fat Maw Rooney would be tight too!

First off let me start by saying that most of you who are on here dogging my coment need to be a little reinformed. I was stating facts. I can say from experience of being in attendance the last three years for the whole festival, that Melvin will play the same set as always, in fact I will list the set for you already if you like and the fest isnt for months. Its a direct shot at trying to rip off the Grateful Dead and Jerry. Donna Jean???? Did anyone in the GD even like her? I realize not many of you fakers have ever seen the Grateful Dead w/ Jerry and after 60 some shows myself, I am sure Jerry is turning over in his grave. Its not about Cosmic being better, all the bands that will be there can play, but its the cool fresh stuff that is out there for music to touch my soul. The old has beens should just give up. $70 bucks to me aint worth it to see the same old stuff. Someone riding The GD and Jerrys coat tails for as long as they can, and some guy promoting it under family, love, music and other fake pretences. Its all fake and about money, not what it should really be about. THE MUSIC! It dosent have to be Cosmic Railroad, there is plenty of great fresh new bands. Ex. Fat Maw Rooney, Chineese Fingertrap, Hyentyte, I could go on forever, but CRR made that festival great cause its fresh. Whether or not they are there playing isnt the case, it could be anybody. Theres just tons better out there. Sorry to upset you all????

No Cosmic Railroad for real?
Cosmic Railroad put on the best set ever last year I was speechless after Help on the way> slipknot> Franklin’s tower I actually had to sit down in disbelief - probably because I’ve seen them play when they’ve drank a lot a Jack ;^) not even the same band.*
First saw WATERBAND three years ago at 3G’s and been on the Good Foot ever since. There music is always fresh and upbeat with the sickest bass I’ve ever heard and never the same set.*Baghdad Scuba Review is always a great show awesome jam’s very well played always!* JGB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!JGB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just hope The Grateful Garcia Gathering remains true to the music and all YOU PEOPLE come for the music and family but please leave you negative attitudes at home one crack head can spoil it for everyone.

I check back often to see who still talks crap. Blastoplast,
Its cool to defend your friends, thats what friends are for, but Bowser, Space Quakers, Boney Fingers, and Covert Operations being better than Cosmic Railroad ???? Are you out of your fucking mind??? You could take the best players in all of those bands and create a new one and they wouldnt even been close to trying to compete against Cosmic. Its completely obvious you are in one of those bands or are friends with the promoter and you are fooling no one. Anyone who has seen Cosmic knows well better! Ironic though....all the bands you mentioned as being better are all seeming to play this year at the 3 G's....Hmmmmmm food for thought. Give it up already and move on. let the festival be what it is! A good time trying to remember Jerry and Co. Dont try to make it sound like those average bands are anywhere near what Cosmic is. Go see one of their shows, and you, like all who see them will know they are the real deal!

Positivity sdl Positivity... I love your passion for music, I wish more people had passion in the world I read these It's sad.. I am in Bowser and Triple G's was great last year. JGB and Melvins Seals, Cosmic and Covert the fireworks, the naked ladies riding around in the morning on golf carts, we are excited to be playing again this year. It's just music And you are right Cosmic is alot of fun, they are my friends and we have played with Cosmic in years past in Milwaukee and elsewhere, we have been asked to play there family gathering this summer. But there is no need to diss people's abilities, and I did have a problem with your comments dissing the members in Covert/Bowser/Spacequakers/Chinese Fingertrap etc.. WTF? What gives you the god given right to bring such negativity onto things that your are not directly involved in. You are just brining upwanted negativity towards Cosmic and upon yourself my dear music critic I wish you all the best in your search of fresh new music. I cannot wait to talk to Cosmic about your ramblings and outright rudeness and love for there band

SDL is obviously seriously misinformed/fucked in the head himself. I have seen Bowser and Covert Operations before and they are both fucking solid bands!! Cosmic Railroad is cool, but it is just the same damn guitar mush/meld over and over and over again. I can only take so much of it. I seriously look forward to GGG again this year, as I was there last year and it was fantastic!! Peace

Mr Fella from Bowser. Again I am completely misunderstood. I was in no way dogging any of Bowser or any of those bands. In fact ive seen them all at one time or another and think youre all really great musicians and bands. I certainly meant no disrespect. This isnt and never was about my personal opinion of liking one band more than the other, or whose the best. If you have done shows with Cosmic before, then you just like all their fans know they are arguably the best band of real jamband musicians that are around. I like to see them whenever possible and the three Gs was one of the few times I see them so when they werent on the lineup I said it sucked they werent there and I made a bad decision and dogged the overall fest. Myself and many others have grown used to seeing them play that particular festival, and since they made that festival what it is, them not being there upset me. It was when I saw on the Cosmic site that it was just a schedule conflict, I realized maybe I was a bit of an ass. The trouble here started when people ( When I say people I mean the promoters and bands who are on the lineup this year because its obvious ) were attacking Cosmic and me both. Me, I made a dumb comment, but why start dogging Cosmic specifically. Especially since they had nothing to do with it. The last time I checked this was still America and we are all entilted to different or same opinions. I never targeted a specific band till it was a full blown argument, and it was never any local or unsigned talent. I dont see how my feelings can bring negativity to Cosmic Railroad. I dont play in the band, they dont know me. I support them as do tons of other people because they are like no other band. They are the only true old time jamband left. After the Grateful Dead and Phish, there is only one. I wont post anymore because I have lost interest in being part of this stupidity any more. I hope the festival is fun, and everyone has a good time.

P.S. To Kronmaster... Are you the promoter or one of the bands ?? You obviously havent seen Cosmic much or at all.

To SLD.

How dare you say this shit:((Myself and many others have grown used to seeing them play that particular festival, and since they made that festival (the 3G's) what it is, them not being there upset me.))

Cosmis Railroad **DID NOT** make this festival what it is today. Are you out of your fucking mind?!?!? What kind of mushrooms are you on??? Its the other way around, I made Cosmic Railroad what it is today, by keeping the band on for two years. The first year I picked them to played at my last Sundog Summer Shakedown back in 2002 when they were called "Strange Pleasures" Members: Greg Beebe - vocals, guitar
Kyle Scott - guitar, vocals Todd Roberson - drums, percussion Mike Doran - bass, vocals . They changed their name the following year to Cosmic Railroad (a jamband name compared to Strange Pleasures). Before the name being on the Grateful Garcia Gathering, they were playing in bars and dives. Go figure... You obviously don't get the clear picture, because I'll say it again, COSMIC RAILROAD HAD A TIMESLOT FOR THE 3G'S THIS YEAR, AND DIDN'T WANT IT. They didn't like the 5:30pm timeslot we gave them. Its that plain and simple. Go bitch at them for not taking it, and move on...

The Grateful Garcia Gathering is about paying tribute to the life and music of Jerry Garcia. It's really that simple.
SDL, you do a great disservice to the festival and to the band you support. Cosmic Railroad in no way made 3G's, but likewise 3G's didn't make Cosmic Railroad either. Just like any other band trying to make it in the world, they use shows like 3G's, 10KLF, and Harvest Fest to get exposure and grow their fanbase, and hope that a few of those people dig the music enough to come see them elsewhere. Yes, it's sad they did not play this year, but please don't spread unnecessary negativity regarding details you obviously know little or nothing about.
I enjoyed many of the bands last year, and while Cosmic played a great set in memory of Jerry, it was by no means their best show. I caught them at their Family Gathering a few weeks ago and it was by far one of the best shows I have seen them play. There were also many other great bands that played that weekend, and there is no way you can compare the many different bands that stand in the same category and ability. It's like apples and oranges. Each musician and band has their own style, technique, and character which makes them unique, which many may like and many may not. There is room in the world for all the good music being made, and people will go see the bands they like wherever they are playing.
Jerry will always be in our hearts, and I ask you one thing;
What Would Jerry Do?
If we spend our time in this life spreading love then there can be no space for hate.

Peace

Hey Now,
After 4 long wonderful years of memories, camping, music, and friendships made in Black River Falls Wisconsin, the long strange trip is over for the Grateful Garcia Gathering. The venue in Black River Falls will no longer be holding music festivals after this summer is over. We wish to thank all the fans, bands, volunteers, vendors, and staff for your support though the years at Black River Falls Wi. The new home for the Grateful Garcia Gathering is now hosted at Legend Valley ( www.LegendValley.net ), just 20 minutes East of Columbus Ohio!

Legend Valley's (formerly Buckeye Lake Music Center in Ohio) owner Steve Trickle, has been in contact with the organizers of the Grateful Garcia Gathering - Tim Sundog and Anthony Lee , since last January about the possibility's of holding it at Legend Valley. The Grateful Dead actually performed there on June 11th 1993. Steve said, "This would be the natural setting for the Grateful Garcia Gathering to be held each summer". The agreement was made by a mere handshake, and a smile! The 3G's is always set to date in between Jerry Garcia's birthday August 1st, and his untimely passing of August 9th. The Grateful Garcia Gathering is scheduled for the weekend of July 31st - August 2nd 2008. Jerry Garcia's Birthday will Shine at the Grateful Garcia Gathering next summer!

Legend Valley is Ohio's #1 camping, music outdoor amphitheater. Its also home to Hookahville, Cabin Fever Festival, and Built to Last. Many great artists have graced the stages at Legend Valley such as The Grateful Dead, Ratdog, Bruce Hornsby, David Grisman, Arlo Guthrie, Ekoostik Hookah, Blue Travelers, Willie Nelson, Leon Russell, AC/DC, Waylon Jennings, Jimmy Buffet, just to name a few! We hope you will make your plans to join us at Legend Valley 2008!

We'll see you at Legend Valley 2008!
