THE BARENAKED TRUTH
Barenaked Ladies vocalist Steven Page lays bare
his hopes for a green future at Grist.org

Barenaked Ladies by Chris Woods
Fun-loving pop-rock band Barenaked Ladies gave their recent U.S. tour an eco-makeover, reducing their footprint with carbon offsets, compostable dishes, and an album distributed via USB thumb drive. They've also partnered with nonprofit Reverb to set up an "eco-village" where concertgoers can learn about going green. Grist's Sarah van Schagen sat down with lead singer Steven Page to chat about his plans to clean up the music industry, his love of cities that "really work," and why being Canadian made him green.

UNlike most "jam bands", Barenaked Ladies can actually *write* *songs*. Yes, they have their clever side, but I'll boldly bet anyone who attended Telluride Bluegrass Festival enjoyed their set -- I certainly did. Not something I can listen to every day, but BNL have a lot more to say -- and have -- than many of the band you read about here.

okay first off fuck whoever called BNL a pop rock band because they have obviously never looked past their couple of mtv hits, which are a completely off balance representation of the band as a whole.

and if you try comparing them to smashmouth it is time to do a little homework before trying to act clever.

BNL music is part clever, part rockin', part beautiful, part innovative, part sad, and part damn hilarious... all the things that make up a good band, like them personally or not. Even more, their live show is all that cranked to eleven. i see all kinds of concerts like moe and umphs that would typically be popular around jambase and i can safely say that the bnl can hang with our favorites any day.

when i saw them live it was pretty interesting to see them play their few pop rock style hits with all acoustic instruments and no drums, kind of a smack in the face to the people who don't know them any better than "one week" or "it's all been done"

just listen to their first album Gordon to hear what an incredibly broad-based and basically just plain good band the BNL are and always have been since their start in the early 90s.

All I have to say is read the interview. It is actually quite interesting to hear the things they are doing.

IMO - musicians should use their fame to do more of these types of things.

Good for them. Why can't people give them props for what they are doing, rather than bash their music. i don't know if they've ever been on mtv, because i haven't watched mtv for about 12 years or more. do they still show videos? last time i tuned in it was all reality garbage and rap (which i wouldn't waste my time on). i do know their song, "if i had a million dollars". that's all i know, but good for them. i hope some of this jambands that claim themselves as environmentalists jump on this band wagon. our future depends on it and our kids future. i for one am anti-global warming. Peace.

I didn't know they were still around. I thought they had that one song. Whatever song it was years ago. I guess the Tride comment jogged my mind but for the life of me I thought they were a one hit band.

I had only heard a few songs of theirs until recently, and they really have a good, unique sound. Their popular songs from a few years ago don't do them justice. And now after reading this, they seem pretty cool too. :)

I saw them once for free, and was glad I did. It was a really fun show. They had the whole crowd jumping around.

I saw them once...they were good for what they did. It was on a big tour...with a bunch of 14 year old girls. The thing that got me was that the 2 main dudes spun around holding hands...then kissed each other (albiet briefly)...one of their legs went up (like they were into it)...lights went down. FREAKS! I'm sure it was a joke...but man...it made me want to leave.

Some people really dig them. I like some songs...but their live show wasn't meant for me.

The Barenaked Ladies kick ass
They kicked ass closing the Telluride Bluegrass main stage last year
They kicked ass at the Bridge Benefit
They are a very talented group of folks who are on the forefront of difital music
All you haters, get lost.
