Stephen Colbert, the insanely funny host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, is set for a guitar solo battle with The Decemberists' multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk next Wednesday night, December 20th, at 11:30pm ET/PT.
What are we talking about?
Good question.
Those who tune-in to Colbert's show already know, for those who can't afford cable, here's the skinny. On November 29th, Colbert ran a spoof called, "Look Who's Riding My Coattails Now," ripping on The Decemberists mtvU-sponsored "Re-Animate The Decemberists" contest. The basic idea of the contest found The Decemberists in front of a green screen and urged kids around the country to "finish" the band's video. The problem is that Colbert did the same thing a few months earlier, putting himself in front of a green screen asking fans to "finish" his own segment.
After learning of The Decemberists contest, Colbert picked up his Star Wars-style light saber and made the following statement:
"Let's see how well they perform their trademark brand of hyper-literate prog-rock when I'm slicing off their legs at the knee. Oh yes. They will feel the pain."
The Decemberists responded to Colbert via Pitchfork and challenged Colbert to a guitar duel.
"Put down the pen, Colbert, and pick up the axe! Let's see what kind of a man you really are, let's SHRED!"
