ALLIGATOR RECORDS SIGNS
JJ GREY & MOFRO!

"A glorious, soul-drenched delight... down-home funk, blues and Dixie rock, unmistakably Southern, undeniably soulful."
-Billboard

"Quietly intoxicating with a stunning melodic freshness... focused, deep songs."
-The Boston Globe

MOFRO
Alligator Records is pleased to announce the signing of down home roots, rock and soul artist JJ Grey and his band MOFRO. Grey's Alligator debut, Country Ghetto, will be released in February 2007. Country Ghetto (produced by Dan Prothero) features 12 original JJ Grey compositions that come right out of the Southern musical and literary tradition. While his songwriting inspirations range from Bill Withers, Van Morrison, and Dan Penn, Grey's songs are always his own, oftentimes relating to the loss of his natural surroundings and the marginalization of the Southern culture he grew up in.

Grey, with longtime musical partner, guitarist Daryl Hance, has released two previous albums under the band name MOFRO: 2001's Blackwater (named by Amazon.com as one of the best CDs of the decade) and 2004's Lochloosa. From the beginning, Grey's songs have been connected to his ancestral Florida homestead 40 miles outside of Jacksonville, a landscape he writes about with passion and devotion.

Grey's ear for detail inhabits his songs, whether it is a story passed down to him from his grandmother or the tribulations of a childhood friend. Grey's voice delivers them with an unflinching force that makes the personal universal and paints a vivid portrait of an exact time or place with words and music. Like his songs, his rich, soulful vocals are forceful and commanding, seemingly old beyond his years. Delivered with brilliant musicianship, the result is both thought provoking and rhythmically and texturally mesmerizing.

Live, JJ Grey & MOFRO blaze their own spontaneous path, performing at festivals and concerts around the world, including jaw-dropping shows at Bonnaroo, The Austin City Limits Festival, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

From gritty funk to juke joint romps, from contemplative country soul to blistering rockers, JJ Grey & MOFRO occupy a unique space in the music world. And, like the best of the great Southern novelists, JJ Grey fills his stories and songs with details that are at once vivid and personal, political and universal. The songs and the music will make you smell the cypress trees, feel the hot breeze, taste the ho-cakes, and remind you that home is where the heart is.

I love Mofro but I liked it back in the day with a bass player. Much better than keyboard bass. JJ is the real deal for sure though.

I've only seen them one time when they were opening for the Derek Trucks Band. Pretty lame show, maybe it just wasn't their night, or they don't do well when opening for others. I'd give 'em another shot.

Mofro is awesome live, plus they've got a killer name. I haven't seen them in years, unfortunately. Must be too cold in Michigan for that Southern goodness.

keep in mind people. Mofro is NOT a jamband.
so dont get dissappointed.. I love MOFRO, and I hope signing to alligator helps them. JJ has corraled a kind of music that is fresh, but rootsy at the same time.
I cant wait for the new release.. Both the first ones, Blackwater and Lochloosa were excellent as well..
peace ya'll ......

I've only seen them once but I was impressed. J.J. still owes us one up here in Illinois--they cancelled on summer camp 05 for some reason. Jamband or not, they jam.

Mofro is such a breath of fresh air. Blackwater, and Lochloosa are great albums, and the live show is well worth your money. Really looking forward to the Harper's Ferry show, and I can't wait for the new album.

There's a cool, rootsy honesty to the writing and the performance with these guys. If you get the chance, you should go out to see them.

Hey, "SomebodysCloset":

What were you using back when you "used to" Mofro in Florida? If it was nasty, maybe it's best, for your sake, that they stay away from NE.

No matter what anyone says, these guys are a jamband as far as I am concerned. You attend those NYE shows in Jax Beach at Freebirds and tell me they don't jam!! I was there last year, can't make it this year though. : (

Remember it is only a jamband if it has a member of Phish in it or if they play only one note all show. Come on get with the program!

Mofro has soul.

Damn, these guys need to come farther north than TN!! I thought it was '04 when they cancelled Summercamp, due to the tornado...

hey "overall": take it easy on SomebodysCloset, clearly he/she made a typo and left out "see" (as in "used to see"), and even more clearly, they're not being negative as they're pleading for them to come up to NE. Don't be so quick to harsh on folks, be good, be nice, be true.

Mofro rock, JJ is a cool shit (I've shared a bottle of bourbon with him), and I can't wait for them to make it up to Harpers Ferry again.
