ME TOO! I'm thrilled that SCI is playing the Boulder Theater one more time before Billy's departure! It's always fun to see a great show and support a worthwhile cause at the same time!

good to see this is happening again, and for such a good cause. just went to the atlanta shows last weekend, they sound as good as ever right now. lots of focus was put on billy and he played very well. hopefully this will be a good one. i'm surprised that jackass that posts all the crap on the other sci articles hasn't destroyed this yet. i hope everyone that goes to this puts in some good gifts and has a fun time.

Yeah man, I was at Atlanta too. Amazing shows! For one second I felt...just like a fi-i-i-i-i-i-ish. I hope they keep that energy going for the rest of the shows and I hope I can make it to a few more. They are true professionals and its great to see a successful band giving back. It really shows humility. It sucks Billy is out but it is what is it is. Let's make a few Joyful Sounds for the rest of the shows.

Uh, oh. I knew it would not be long before the hating started. Let's just pray that jgarcia1 does not see this article...that butt plug...

I wish I could go to this show, but oh well. All of my favorite jam bands have quit so abruptly that they did not give me time to prepare. First Jerry dies and takes GD with him. Then Phish decides to call it quits. I can only hope that the Cheese go out more gracefully, as we all know that Coventry blew.

I look forward to Phish and SCI reuniting someday. I will probably be much older, but it will be a good throwback to these young days of partying and good times. Until then, I will have to let go of the so-called "Jam Scene", because all of the other bands on the scene don't come near Phish or the Cheese.

As an aside from the main article, and going back to joeye's comment, Phish will play at least one more time together. Everyone forgets about this, but typically all bands play at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

I saw SCI at the Fox in Atlanta on Saturday. It was a great show. Sad to see them go and we can only hope they each spawn new projects to make us smile. I have some photos from the show posted on mypage...not the best quality (I need a new camera big time), but better than nothing:

I think that everyone should stop being so up set about bill leaving and starte focusing on how badass the last red rocks show will be. I was in atlanta and the next time I will be out will be Red Rocks. Start listening to some homeslice and chill out remember how they all got started and not how it is ending. Bring on the bluegrass baby.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT!!! I AM NOT, REPEAT NOT, THE J GARCIA WHO WILL BE PAINTING AT THE NYE BASH...IF YOU ARE NOT CLEAR ABOUT WHAT I SPEAK, READ THE UPDATED SOD ACTIVITIES REPORT. LET ME REITERATE, I AM NOT THE PAINTER NAMED JGARCIA WHO WILL BE WORKING THE SHOWS FOR US, SO PLEASE REFRAIN FROM ANY AND ALL DEROGATORY ACTIVITIES DIRECTED TOWARD THE LIKELY NOBLE MAN...I AM NOT HIM. That said, I will be there in full regalia, straddling that fine line between a funeral and a wake as the SCI shows as we know them come to an impending close. My mood, their mood, all involved's moods will be intersting to monitor over the weekend's bachannalia. I am very curious to see how it plays out, but at present, my feelings lean toward those of complete and utter gratitude for all the joy they have provided me throughout the years. They, and their outstanding predecessors, have been my church for a good while, and though many times I've needed a vacation after my Cheese vacations, they have frequently rejuvenated my spirit and brought life back to its base levels of community, commaraderie, and celebration, all the while creating some of the premier musical art of our generation. I will always hold them the dearest in my heart, attempting to carry with me and share with others the after-effect their collective spiritedness and downright goodness has imprinted upon me in all my future affairs in life.
Except, of course, when it comes to my beloved brethren on the SCI boards, who just can't seem to leave me be. Cheap shots?? Parting shots?? Last shots. To whom does it matter any longer? I do find it quite humorous how others can assert the identical claims as myself but somehow avoid the long arms of your wraths'. Double Standard?? Not worth it. On an SCI musical note, Just prior to Outside/Inside on the 25th, after 4 obvious placating tunes to brother Bill, Kang barks out to the crowd. "Alright, you ready for something else?" Interpretations anyone? It reeked of frustration and discontent at the band's apparent appeasing of Bill's musical wishes while they grind through these final shows. When and where did all the tension/separation/ for lack of a better term, power struggle begin, and whose on what side. Obviously Kyle seems to be hip to where Mike wants to go, and the percussion section are taking their own creative strides. Oh to be a fly on the wall of some of the more recent band meetings. Imagine the look on Bill's face when Mike told him he was bringing in a laptop for more electronica effects, or did he even tell him at all? Interesting to know. And a chip for JGarcia for making it through a whole post with nary a mean comment. I'll toast to that.

jgarcia1-get a grip! Dude its a band. My god don't you have anything else meaningful in your life to pass the time other than SCI? You deserve an award for being the biggest wanker ever to post on Jambase. Seek help man.

Good band, but as Joeye and you prove some SCI fans are way over the top (though not typical SCI fans). I thought only Phish fans could be so obssessed. These are simply people that play music. Trey aint Gandhi and Kang aint MLK. We will miss their music as it stands but it aint life shattering.

Joeye-Jerry did not die to spite you, and it certainly did not come abruptly. I really enjoy all of the bands you talk about, but the idol worshipping is very unbecoming don't let the "jam-scene" hit you on the ass on the way out. Maybe the end of SCI along with Phish will weed out some of the worst members of this "scene".

Blower: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know, since your post, I have sat here in utter disbelief at the accuity and precision of your perceptions at the state of my life. I would go sentence by sentence through your post, pointing out your sheer Nostradamaus like capacities to know everything of real true importance of not just life in general, but my life in particular. After soom deep painful reflection, I couldn't help but take your advice and get a life. So I ran down to Big 5 and picked up a wind-surfing board, a fly-fishing rod, and a thirty yacht 6 rifle, instruments that should easily entertain me on my get a life mission. And about all this idol worshipping, YOU ARE SO RIGHT ON!!!!!!! How dare I revere a musician, silly me. So I went to straight to church and got my idol-worshipping back headed in the right direction. Thank you so much!!! The thought of going through my whole life and missing your allmighty wisdom, how could I go forward?? To think, liking a band. Hey Blower, before I do anything else, can I run it by you first and get, you know, get the Blower seal of approval. Tell me how you do it Blower. By what criteria do you apply to other peoples life experiences and determine whether their life is worth a shit or not. I/We must know!!!!! You can't keep this critical vital iinfo from us. Come hard, and don't come at all.

    Blower,

I won't even ask about your name, because it is obvious...but here is my response to your commentary:

I never said Jerry died to spite me, or that he died abruptly. But GD did quit abruptly. After 30 years of touring, they ended it all, just like that. Now Phish and SCI are following suit. After a decade or more of looking forward to seeing these bands every year, myself and others won't have that option. It is a major loss.

I wouldn't call having a favorite band "idol worship." There is a reason that these particular bands created, and continued, the so-called "Jam Scene": They kick serious ass!!! I have seen many shows from many bands, and none of the bands in this scene come anywhere close to GD, Phish, or SCI. They also don't draw the large crowds, and have a hard time keeping the vibe going.

Do you think that I am wrong? How about addressing comments I am actually saying...

Also, I will continue to enjoy new music, as always. But we all know that the end of SCI is significant, as was the end of GD and Phish. Why shouldn't fans be "obsessed", as you put it? It's like saying a man should not be obsessed with his wife. Or we shouldn't be obsessed with our kids. People love these bands because of the love they feel at the shows. No other bands have made it to this level yet. I hope that somebody does, but in my opinion it hasn't happened yet.

This is why it feels abrupt to me. When GD quit, I knew Phish was still there to fill the void. When Phish quit, I knew SCI was still there. Now there is just the void that may or may not ever be filled.

Dare I say that jgarcia1 is right? Well, I said it. In short...to you, blower, I say,

    YOU BLOW !!!

Ya, it was abrupt. I know there were always rumors flying around that Jerry was going to die... I just remember the day that it happened I was very surprised. I don't blame the band for not replacing him, he was a core member of the band, wrote many of their most loved and famous songs, and the band wouldn't have been the same without him.

But look around, there are some new upstarts doing some good things still, who knows which one of them, or groups of them, will come forth with something unique and awesome to entice us to go see them time after time again.

P-Groove is sounding pretty good these days, they are no SCI but.... and now that Steve Kimock and Zero are playing together again, I would really recommend you check them out, you might be surprised at what you hear. Especially if they cover some dead songs, to date they are the only band I've ever heard that really does a Dead cover justice.

SCI's probable disintegration is a major bummer, but there's still a lot of good bands and good music out there, give it a chance. At worst you just waist 20 bux and don't like it, but even then it still gives you something to do and look forward to.

Sizlunt, I agree with you that there are several great bands that are up and coming. I am really enjoying groups like ALO and you are right on about Zero. But the fact is that they are either "not there yet" or they are just doing killer side projects. In my opinion, no band is poised, ready to take over the legions of folks who went to see GD, Phish, and SCI every year.

Festivals are cool, but the scene is always so mixed up. Small venue shows rock! But the vibe isn't as big. Don't get me wrong, I love these types of shows too. But it isn't the same. The atomosphere that happens around bands that tour constantly and play larger venues is unique.

I realize that life must go on, and I am not really that hung up on these bands. Hell, I can't even make the last Cheese shows because I am so busy doing other things. However, I think it is worth mentioning that this occurrence is a major loss for many of us...

Ya I know what you mean man, the smaller shows lack something, but at the same time they have something else. I like being able to buy a beer for some guy who just played kick ass music for me. What I think a lot of the smaller shows lack is a feeling of seeing a really great performance, as opposed to watching a decent band play music. SCI, Phish, and the Dead put on a performance. I think, personally, that Zero does too. In small venues, the one band that I've seen that I felt like I was watching something really special was Zilla, and Railroad Earth put on some really good shows for me too. In fact, the more I see RRE the more I am enthusiastic about their music. I would be beyond stoked if they picked up a piano player or keyboardist.
