San Francisco's, The Estate, have recently completed their self-titled debut album. The new record features guest appearances by Jimbo Mathus, Sasha Dobson, David Phillips, and Eric McFadden.
The Estate began after Jay Sanders (piano, trumpet) and Jesse Tyre Karp (guitar, vocals) became friends hanging out, drinking and playing music at the now defunct Blue Lamp Lounge, a dive blues bar in San Francisco. Often nights at the bar would lead to later nights with several people partying and playing music at Jesse's apartment, located conveniently next door.
Jesse had written a good number of songs since the breakup of his former band
Cool Water Canyon, and he was eager to put together a new project. Jay is part of a community of young San Francisco jazz musicians including; Dayna Stephens (John Scofield) on sax, Scott Larson on Trombone (Marcus Shelby), Seth Ford-Young (Tom Waits, El Radio Fantastique), and Mike Irwin Johnson (Knights of the New Crusade).
Over the past year The Estate has been playing a mix of headline and support shows on both coasts. A couple recent support slots included opening for legends like Dickey Betts and Melvin Sparks. Combining influences of rock, jazz, and soul, The Estate continues to carve out their own sound and play for growing audiences.
