Trey Anastasio :: 10.11.06 :: Electric Factory :: Philadelphia, PA

Trey Anastasio :: 10.11.06 :: Philly
It always happens on the nights you'd least expect it. A miserable and rainy evening had touched down in Philadelphia and the last thing anyone wanted to do was leave the comfort of the couch to see Trey Anastasio play. It often seems though, that if you break through those gut-wrenching moments of laziness, you'll be rewarded. After considering the strong GRAB shows from the summer, the decent new album, and what appears to be a fresh sense of passion from Trey, it was clear that the positives had outweighed the negatives, so off we went, into the cold.

Trey had just released his latest album, Bar 17, and was a handful of stops into his umpteenth trek across the country in support of his latest endeavor. The crowd was damp from the evening's downpours, but the spirits were elevated as fans entered the half-empty Electric Factory.

With a start time that was 45 minutes late, the band and its ringmaster took the stage as the clamor of 1000 fans rose to the ceiling. With a nod and a signature lean to the crowd, Trey guided the talented band off into "Gotta Jibboo." The show was born, alive and kicking! By "Push On 'Til Day" Tony Hall and Trey had locked instruments at least three times, and it was crystal clear that Tony was there to hold down a funky, subterranean pocket with his wildly twisting work on bass. Trey played off the energy that Tony along with Jennifer Hartswick kindled at the skull of the stage. Jennifer's trumpet glistened almost as much as her smile as she pulled at us with song and blasted her way into our wet, warming hearts. Ray Paczkowski cranked up his key work as Jennifer's voice elevated our souls through "Night Speaks to a Woman."

Trey Anastasio Band :: 10.11.06 :: Philly
The first set ended with a wave from the band and a simple announcement that they would be back shortly. The at times uncomfortable, casket-style standing area of the Electric Factory stayed packed through set-break as people reminisced of days past with a band they had not phorgotten. Many thought that this latest incarnation of Trey was his best answer to date.

The second set was full of surprises as the band whacked away at some classics. During a mediocre version of "Come As Melody," Trey took the form of a circus conductor. His three-ring circus is composed of one ring for the crowd, one for the band, and one for himself. When he is not guiding the crowd, he is egging on Tony, Jennifer, or Ray, though he seemed to pay very little attention to drummer Jeff Sipe. That lack of attention directed towards Jeff hurts the music, and as incredible as Jeff is in the Aquarium Rescue Unit, his percussive conversations fall flat in this setting. Perhaps he is simply over-shadowed by the leading front man.

Trey Anastasio :: 10.11.06 :: Philly
The cold wind blew in a very special guest, Mike Gordon, and Trey was quick to bring his old band mate out for some fun. Mike emerged from the shadows for a wild romp on the stage. His work with Ray on "46 Days" was superb, and the ruckus was on from there as they ripped through a stellar version of "Twist." The passion and joy that was embodied in Phish was brought to life during this fifteen minute marathon jam.

With the crowd fully enveloped and the band hitting harder than most thought possible, Jeff got up to finish the set, but Trey sat him back down for one last extended, jaw-dropping jam. Tony and Mike went at it like school boys scrapping in the school yard, kicking up an Electric Factory dueling-bass jam, while Trey moved to play organ and Mike jumped on Trey's guitar.

The musicianship and deep conversation that occurred in Philly were so good that even those who dislike Trey or Phish would have been forced to enjoy this incarnation. "First Tube" brought the house down, and before we knew it, the evening had ended and we were whisked away, sent back into the cold, but with the knowledge that we had witnessed a truly remarkable evening of music to carry us back to the warm confines of our homes.

Man, enough about Trey. He's great, but theres so much more music out there, it always..."Trey did this" "Trey did that" in all of these jam band websites. Everyone knows that Phish is going to reunite... Focus on some different shows...but the story was well written..

the opening to this article was so rediculous that i decided not to read on- its cold and rainy evening in philly and "the last thing anyone wanted to do was leave the comfort of the couch to see Trey Anastasio play"
what the fuck is this guy talking about- if i had the chance to see trey i would be stoked on it for the preceeding days and if i was sitting around on my ass on a boring dreary day then a trey concert to keep myself busy sounds like about the best possible solution

All due repect to Trey - but I can't help but think he and Phish are phucking overrated. And for godsake - please stop making that stupid "fuck face" when you play. Spend some time in the mirror and work on a new look...

Hey Ciffy - I found the snickers wrapper - it's going for Phive thousand - it even comes with chocolate bits....

I like it when trey makes that face, when he makes that face i know he's bringing the funk. I don't know who else in the jamband community that could mess with Phish in my opinion, besides mr. phillip lesh and his friends. Trey show is not the same, but phish are a force to be reckogned with. peace. keep making that face trey.

What do the faces he makes have to do with anything? This isn't a Backstreet Boys concert where image is the number 1 priority. This is TREY ANASTASIO, the GUITARIST, who is playing for the MUSIC. Just let him play, criticism on stupid shit like that is what brings major negativity to the table.

I am not a huge Trey fan, so the show was not high on my list of things to see. Long story short - I walked away feeling satisfied - more satisfied then I have been w/ Trey in along time.

Take it for whats it's worth
cheers,

Did I say image is nothing? Sure image enhances the performance, but when I go to a show, I go to hear music, not to see the crazy light setup or the performer's fashion sense.

I'm talking about image in a musical performance, not the movies, because in the movies image is ALOT more important then on stage.

Can you read before you type please, vanilla?

Wasn't impressed with Trey this summer but this show sounds really good. I'm glad to hear that he's reaching into Phish's canon. I hope that Jeff Sipe gels with this band because he could really send them over the top.

I can understand how people are sick of hearing about Trey all the time. With two mediocre (at best) albums and a couple lackluster tours I was a little sick of hearing about him too. Hearing him play this summer I felt like he was playing a lot of the same old licks and the jams didn't really go anywhere. Even if his core fanbase agrees that his new music is lacking there are still tons of fans that will listen to it anyway and even like it. The truth of the matter is Trey is still a great guitarist and has made a ton of good music over the past 20 years. Sooner or later he'll get back on track. And if people still don't like it there's alway a Jambase forum for them to bitch in.

It sure would be hard for me to get off a comfy, smoky couch to go see frickin' trey anastasion, too. But it sounds like he's havin fun again, and while it mostly seems he's reaching for a past glory that can never be reattained, at least he's making some of those "moments" happen again. I'm tired of hating on trey, way to go bud. and oh yeah, we're talkin trey. image is everything

Sipe sounds great. He's meshing very well. Trey and this band are amazing. Go see another show with another band if you want to critisize. Yes, constructive criticism good. What the hell are you people looking for? Sure there are many great bands out there. Trey is not even my favorite guitarist alive but I can admit he's better then my favorite in his own right. Think! By the way the Myrtle Beach show at the Red Neck Riviera kicked ass.

Not a bad article. We all have different opinions about Trey, Phish, etc, but can we all PLEASE collectively agree to stop shoe-horning the letters "ph" onto words that start with "f". Christ on a pony, enough already.

I saw SCI last night and it helped me realize one of the best things about living in/going to shows in - South Florida. I guess it's because were all the way down here; the crowds consist less of travelers and "hard-core" fans, instead most people are just music lovers who don't focus or worship one particular band. I realized this last night because everyone I met/talked to - agreed that it's because of Jerry and Trey that things like the concert we were at last night, improvisational music mixed with many genres, Bonnarroo, Jam Bands sand this web-site exsist.

i agree with coloskier right off the bat, granted phish set a level not too many artists are going to achieve, however, lets move onto something else. every article on this site gets back to trey, lets look at the things to come. moe., umphreys... if you hate them, then whatever, and i think this trey show sounded amazing, but there are others out there... al schnier?!?

how are people going to crack on the trey shit taking face? i like to see musiciang dig in like that. derek trucks is one of my favorite guitar players of all time, but he stands like a statue the whole time. i wish he would just jump around on stage swinging his guitar around his head while sticking his tounge out and making a shit taking face.but he doesn't who cares? you haters have weak criteria for criticism. and if you don't like hearing so much about trey, why are you here posting your crap, reading this article? because you are in denial, you love trey, ha ha you confused kids
by the way this trey band is the shit. Tony Hall is a monster. the way this band connects, and the places the jams go is to the point where all other "jambands" are left in the dust. i still love moe, cheese, panic,etc. but trey is at the top of his game, that's why you hear so much about him. see ya in AC for new years.

For those that say they write about Trey too much, I would have to say that you are ignorant about the dynamics at work here on Jambase. The idea is to attract readers to the site. It drives the advertising and grows the community. Phish was the most biggest "jam" band of the internet age. Trey was the front man. Every article about Trey gets loads of comments. Why? Because most folks still care one way or the other. If Jerry (RIP) was still around they would write lots about him too. Right now, Trey is still the king of the scene, so expect more articles....

those faces is like what trey mentions on bittersweet motel. it's like arnold schwarzanegger working out and he's cumming all day. trey is having orgasms up their when he's "searching for his sound". it's called "channeling" the music through you. Regardless of whether i like trey's new album or not, Trey rocks and rocks hard and I give him mad props. looking at a recent setlist, he did Stone Free as an opener and Will Go Round In Circles. It looks similar to the 99' TAB setlists, with some new stuff. Trey looks like he may be getting back to rippin' shit up, rather than pop music. I got two words, Go Trey. Hope to see you back with the boys soon, if not I will still love ya'. peace be with you.
