Joan Jett :: 10.13.06 :: Avalon :: Boston, MA

Joan Jett
While most things in Rock change and evolve, and not always for the better, Joan Jett pretty much stays the same.

As she has been in the game for nearly 30 years now, she has had many chances to sell out, sex-it-up, or jump at one of the numerous Runaways reunion tour offers. But she has instead chosen to keep her standards and marched at her own power-chord-driven path, and her reputation in the rock world has remained remarkably in tact.

Playing to a near-capacity crowd at the legendary Avalon club in Boston on October 13th, Jett literally ripped through a 20-song set that was, as her manager Kenny Laguna promised, an "amazing balance of songs from her popular catalogue alongside cuts from her new amazing CD, Sinner."

Looking fit and appearing physically unchanged, Jett and her latest incarnation of the Blackhearts sounded amazingly tight, which is unusual as this was only the second date of her current fall/winter tour, which kicked off the night before in Philadelphia.

Dougie Needles - Blackhearts
In an unexpected move two songs into her set, Jett tore into the familiar and killer opening riffs of the Runaways classic "Cherry Bomb." While she often plays it live, its appearance early was unexpected. While one would expect that for an encore, it was a great choice and brought the initially semi-sedated Boston audience to their full attention.

As promised, Jett peppered the set with some great re-workings of classics like "Do You Wanna Touch" and "Bad Reputation," which has become extra cool to hear as it was the theme song to the cult classic TV show Freaks and Geeks. An unexpectedly raw and powerful rendition of her ode to obsessed love, "I Hate Myself for Lovin' You," was also on the mark, as was Jett's passionate delivery. You could almost see her channeling the self-loathing with which the main character in the song is obviously battling.

And while Jett has been famous in the past for her interpretations of other artists' songs, she brought out a couple of new ones from Sinner. Her hot cover of Sweet's "A.C.D.C." and The Replacements' "Androgynous" fit in well with her set, and she even managed to best Sweet's original vision of the song - no small feat!

Joan Jett
While Jett got a bit political at times, complete with sound bites from George W. Bush himself, she also got as primal as she could on the lyrically hard "Fetish." Though the song was seemingly lost on some audience members, it was a reminder of how Jett can get as down and dirty as any male in the game.

And of course, she would be the first to tell you that she has a top-notch backing band in her Blackhearts. The ever-reliable Dougie Needles was restrained and flashy when he had to be on his lead guitar licks while drummer Thommy Price kept the pace of the set in high gear as his drumming was, as always, powerful yet tasteful, kicking in hard when needed (as on "I Love Rock and Roll") and restrained when he should be ("Crimson and Clover").

Her set was rounded out appropriately with a cover of the Boston-laced lyrics of Jonathan Richman's "Roadrunner" and the show-ending take on Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People." While hardly a rock song in its original form, Jett transformed the track so well in 1983 that over the years it has become identified almost as much with her as it is with Sly.

Maybe it is considered her song now because it sums her up so well. Jett is a rock chick, and that is all she wants to be. By ducking many lucrative offers to sell her songs to commercials and by not appearing in the many (no doubt cheesy) movie offers that have come her way, she continues to be that rarest of artist that truly represents musical integrity.

Joan Jett is the same as she was in the 80s: A total musical joke! Put on some Joni Mitchell if you want to talk a GREAT female artist.

we call it pop music, actually.

dedhed69yermom- i think trey has the wanking covered! i just support it! if i need to dooche ill pick the 'bobby' guy from DSO up by the heels and insert/squeeze (sorry, i know thats your other fav band)

yes - joan is a real example of a revolutionary woman - modeling her giutaur for the camera like no woman has before! (if we want to set an example for young woman seek 'more than a hammer' a track from the mule/deep end album on whicth the mighty Mchell N'Degnochello (sp?) commands sick sick sick electric bass! than, find a young woman to play this track for so she can grow up knowing there is more to making music than joan jet and her fans understand.

Oh yeah dude, cause they'll only listen to what YOU think is good, right? Why don't you get off your fuckin high horse and accept that a lot of people like a lot of different kinds of music. Joan Jett means a whole lot to a whole lot of people. guess that doesn't matter at all tho because YOU don't like her. Get off the internet and open your damn mind up before it destroys us all. and way to throw in a DSO "diss" so subtle-like. Your coolness is beyond compare, loser.

dedhed6111, plenty of IMmaturity in your response, which apparently goes with your musical tastes! Joni Mitchell will be remembered for her body of work WELL before Joan Jett's because they are not in the same league. Joan made eMpTyV videos where Joni made boatloads of *groundbreaking* music. Listen to Blue, Hejira, Court and Spark, For The Roses and Mingus. When you find any of Joni's work that *approaches* that variety, richness and greatness, let me know, son.

Make that "When you find any of Joan Jett's work that *approaches* that variety, richness and greatness of Joni Mitchell, let me know, son."

Sorry Pops, I didn't think about the lesson you taught me. That if you don't think some music is as "groundbreaking"(nice quotations, pretentious a-hole) as others that you so gushingly rave about, its okay to spout off negative nonsense like you are some kind of fucking award-winning music critic whose word is the end. Do us all a favor and just sign off the computer, put a gun in your mouth, and blow me

It is obvious that anybody who is busting on Joan Jett is not familiar with her songs. She effin rocks, plain and simple. I saw her in the front row center when i was a kid and ended up wearing a leather jacket and her jersey and her bandana around my wrist. I wanted to be like Joan Jett becuz she rocked and she was that cool. I can't even remember ever doing that over anyone else. She rocked. She was so amazing live. She's just a little bitty tiny person and she played guitar and rocked the house. This is real rock n roll. You know the Bo Diddley beat. This stuff isn't for sissies. Joan Jett rocks hard. This is jump in the air and sing about passion and hormones and get into fight on a Saturday night and know how to throw a puch serious rock n roll. And know how to dance and go all night! We're talking drums and guitars and HARD rockin stuff! She's amazing. I just recently saw the Drive-by Truckers and they have a hard rockin chick and their whole band rocks with that much intensity. I'm talking jump up and down and throw your hair around rock n roll.

I love good music. I love a variety of music. I'm not too "cool" to admit it! Man, I love to go to Jazzfest in New Orleans and check out all 8 stages, the same with Bonnaroo and I love that both has exposed me to new music! I pray that i keep hearing new stuff that makes me sing and dance. There is not much better in life than MUSIC!!!!!!! How can you even compare different people just becuz theyre both female????? Thats like saying "well, your brother gets good grades why cant you."

The people who i love r originals!!!! Thats what makes a star! when someone has the guts to be THEMSELVES!!!!!!!!!!!! Joan Jett is a one of a kind original! Rock on, JOan and dont worry about your "Bad Reputation!"

I'd really like to read more posts on this subject. But re-reading Evil F's post i would bet that Michelle, the bass player, who's name he butchered is a Joan Jett fan. I had Joan listed as one of my favorite's on my profile before this article came out. I was, coincidentally, emailing a friend about Joan Jett because my friend had just invited me down to Baltimore to hear a hard rockin' chick play and it made me, instantly, think of Joan Jett. Coincidentlly, on top of that, last week, I was reading the October issue of Jane magazine and Joan Jett and the Runaways are featured in that beautifully, quite a nice journalistic tribute with great photos and the author saying how much she loves Joan Jett though she was too young to have heard her in the 80s and how much she loves the whole tough girl eyeliner look, too. There's, also, an interesting fashion photo shoot that was shot at Bonnaroo 2005. You know, Bonnaroo, the awesome festival that has tons and tons of great music and tons and tons of different, talented musicians from every possible genre. Hey, Bonnaroo, should ask Joan Jett to play! I'd love to see her there and I've gone every year. I put my money where my mouth is. I went to my first concert in 7th grade and I went to every possible festival I could go to every weekend from April and I'm still going now November of this year. I've been doing that for 4 non-stop years and I know music and I LOVE MUSIC!!!!! I toured with the Dead, I'm on festival tour, constantly and I get front row center, everytime and I dance my A-- off! A guy gave me a bumpersticker, this year, at Bonnaroo and it said, "I came to GET DOWN!" And I think Joan Jett says it best when she says, "I LOVE ROCK N ROLL!"
