R.I.P. Donald “Duck” Dunn

THE LOW-END LOSES A TRULY GREAT ORIGINAL

Legendary Stax Records session bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn passed away in his sleep yesterday on May 13, 2012, after performing in Tokyo with his old Booker T. & the M.G.'s bandmate Steve Cropper and soul icon Eddie Floyd. Dunn is known to many for his role in The Blues Brothers band that appears in their beloved film, and he played on records and toured with the likes of Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Freddie King, Sam & Dave and many, many others. A self-taught musician, Dunn’s style was all feel and ear, a touch based on spot-on instinct and an abiding will to serve the song – whatever tune that might be in whatever style he was called on to play that moment. Dunn was 70 years old.
