From nickelcreek.com:

Dearest Listener,

Nickel Creek
After seven years of extensive touring in support of three records (seventeen years as a band), we've decided to take a break of indefinite length at the end of 2007 to preserve the environment we've sought so hard to create and to pursue other interests. It has been a pleasure to write, record, and perform for you through the years and we'd like to heartily thank you for your invaluable contribution to our musical lives.

Yours,
Nickel Creek
(Sean, Sara, and Chris)

Billboard's interview with Nickel Creek has more details.

Chris Thile will perform with his How To Grow a Band for the next three evenings (8.29-8.31) in New York, Nashville and Boulder respectively. Nickel Creek will begin touring again on September 8 at West Virginia University.

Thats too bad. Just saw them at New West Fest and it was pretty tight. I really enjoyed their twist on bluegrass

It will suck to miss Nickel Creek for a while, but it sounds like their taking a break for the right reasons. I'm sure they'll be back someday with a fresh new sound for us.

That's dissapointing, Nickel Creek has such a unique sound, I'll miss seeing them. Hopefully they will enjoy their time apart, and Sara, I LOVE YOU!!!!

Best of luck to 'em.

I saw them also at New West Fest and I had a feeling this day might be here soon. Since Chris has been working so much with his new band. Wish all the best of Luck.

End of 2007... isn't this announcement a bit premature?

That's wild, I *also* saw them at New West Fest. Highlight would be when the stage-manager/front-of-house-sound guy came on stage and dropped that sample on the iBook during the cover of Britney's "Toxic". Pretty damn funny that their last album was entitled "Why Should the Fire Die?"

I just want to see Chris Thile keep playing.

Would you rather they do it Trey style. Let tickets sell out for the tour and then tell your fans that this is the end.

Just saw Chris for 3 days w/ Yonder @ Horning's....new member?! Well, maybe not, but I'll see that brother anywhere. He player Bach to Beck to the Beatles. It's not often you get goose bumps standing in 90 degree sunshine.
