Particle by Earl Gardner
This week Particle returns to the road for a three month trek covering every corner of the country. On July 18th the band celebrated the release of their new live DVD Transformations and double live CD For the People at The Fillmore in San Francisco. This summer Particle also played high profile shows at San Diego Street Scene, Lollapalooza, and Milwaukee's Summerfest where they played their own set as well as part of a new collective called "Mickey Hart and Friends" featuring Mickey Hart, members of The Mutaytor and talking-drum master Sikiru. After Lollapalooza the band took a few weeks off to re-charge.

The tours first leg starts on August 29th in Santa Rosa, CA at the Last Day Saloon and heads up the West Coast with stops in Oregon and a big show at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival on September 4. After that the band makes its way through Colorado and several stops in the Midwest and a special late night show at The Parish in Austin, TX during Austin City Limits on Sept 15th. After that the band continues south for several shows in Alabama, Georgia, Florida and other areas of the South East. Particle will then return home for their Six-Year Anniversary at Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood on October 13th. More details about this event will come in the coming weeks.

The second leg of the tour starts with a big Halloween blowout at The Granada Theatre in Lawrence, KS. The band then makes it way up to North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin and then a show at one of the bands favorite venues, Park West in Chicago. Particle will then hit the North East with highlights such as Irving Plaza in NYC and Paradise Rock Club in Boston before heading back down the East Coast and concluding the tour in Greensboro, NC at Flying Anvil on November 18th.

Stay tuned for news of several new shows in December and the bands New Years run!

I'm not here to to dis the band just to stir up emotions but I do have to say that It is embarrassing to me how easy its become for a group of guys to get together and make a living by catering to this over-saturated scene. For example; SCI has managed to build a huge fan-base which at first was built on thier hippy mountain roots back when their jams were bluegrass. It was during this phase when even I while in college saw them four times. Why?, because of all of the hype they get, plus it was the thing to do (all my friends were there), anyway I thought they sounded like a jam band for elevators, so I didn't see them again for about 5 or 6 years untill they headlined Langerado. I stayed for 3 or 4 songs just long enouph for my ears to confirm what I was hearing. They were playing electronic fused jams which in my opinion was just them exploiting the popular sound of the day. Which bring me to Particle, whether Particle is concious of this or not they are just another generic franchise trying to cash in. If Particle or SCI is your absolute favorite then I think you should wake up, and try to find a friend or relative (someone not consumed by the jam scene)who is a musician or maybe just older and see what they think of these bands.

really....you think that any successful band...such as sci and particle...has it "easy" and can just "make a living." you are a dumbass. particle was actually one of the leaders and innovators of their genre. they are awesome musicians and im siked for fall tour. don't check out jambase if you dislike jambands.

you siked or pysched? partical and bands like them are the reason the scene is so beat. people should not jam, just for the sake jam. they are so sloppy, and the only solid player they had just bailed.

you are saying its the thing to do to go see cheese? ha i have to beg people to come along with me whove never even heard of them to come along, and they always wind up being amazed. I think the popular thing to do is go see OAR and dave, thats the shit polluting kids minds. Cheap musicianship, yes particle are the most gifted musicians, but they are a good time, with some good beats to dance to. So stop being a downer, not everyone can be as talented as the allman brothers and the dead. I think you need to become more open to a new genre of music consisting of STS9, bisco, particle, pgroove, the new deal etc. It may not be Eric Clapton up there on stage, but its a good time and fun to see.

i hope particle goes back to those funky electronic grooves minus those lyrics they are known for. Let Molitz jam away on his moog, thats the good particle, the fun particle not that shit that they try to sing and put some guitars behind it.

Bisco and the new deal have been around for a long time. sts9 is fine...but u-melt partical are so weak. clapton isn't a jam band and i think he might be past his prime. oar and dave are pop jam. as for partical i've seen them a few time spread out over many years, ans i've seen little or no progress. scott would have helped, but that is no more. I'm really not a genra person, i like, no love good players of all kinds. i've seen every from rod stewart to slayer and everything in between. i'm not the be all end all, and i don't like saying a band is weak...but i'm so tried of people being high on partical. they should just do late night/after shows. as for sci, they are most definitely getting it done, and i say that not being a fan of sci...

I guess I should add that i love jam bands I've been seeing STS9 and Bisco for almost 10 years. My favorite of this bunch is P-Groove I've followed P-Groove from playing every Wed. for free in a pub in Tallahasse to selling out 900 cap. venues. The first time I saw Particle was in an empty bar. Although I never again paid money to see them I have noticed how there building a career by what vida421 accurately calls jamming for the sake of jamming or what I call jamming for the sake of being a "jam band" and therefor being publicized by this website and instantly absorbed into a large non-discriminating buit-in fanbase

although i am REALLY disappointed they are skipping Philly, i think it's going to be a good fall tour for Particle. Ben Combe is one of the best guitarists nobody has heard of.

So Phreakshow, are you a musician? You kind of implied that in your first post. If so, what is your band and where are you guys touring? If it's so easy to make jamtronica and people listen to it because they're too dumb to know better WHY AREN'T YOU DOING IT??? I like Particle because they put on a great dance party. I felt w/ Charlie in the band they lacked songwriting and they didn't progress. I don't think they're new incarnation is that much better but it's still a fun show. It's not jamming for jams sake; IT'S DANCE MUSIC! Have you folks ever been to a dance club and heard what most DJ's do? It's boring as shit compared to seeing a decent jamtronica band (with the exception of some world class DJ's). As far as SCI goes I'm not a huge fan but I wouldn't deny that those guys have talent. Just because you don't get it or don't like it means it's bad music. If there's a genre of music that disappoints live it's hip hop.

BTW Vida, I wouldn't shit on peoples' grammar when you can't even spell Particle. After all it's in the title of the article! How can you say that they're the reason the scene is so beat??? If any scene is beat (which it most definately is not) it's because of shit-talking nay-sayers who rip bands instead of supporting the ones they like.

With new bands tearing up the scene like Pnuma Trio, Signal Path, LOTUS and the like there's going to be a lot more to come. This is a genre of music with talented musicians who have diverse musical tastes. If you want to talk about cashing in on bad music go make emo or hip hop.

all I can say at this point is...whether a jamband/electronica fan or not...if you post more than 2-3 times within a couple hours...on ANY message board...YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE!!! Particle happen to be friends of mine. that being said, I don't think they are the most awesome band around. but thats OK. bands don't have to be the greatest of musicians to be fun. particle creates a dance vibe unlike that of other electronica bands. they still need to grow as a band but there is plenty of good times to be had at a particle show. as jamband fans, we are supposed to be open minded, I myself like a whole lot of different kinds of music. however, I don't feel the need to get online and dis those bands which I'm not too fond of. Keep your negative comments to yourself miserable people (you know who you are). these spaces are for people to share their experiences good AND bad, not for slamming bands you don't like. if the band the article is about doesn't appeal to you, then please, surf on to another article and keep your miserable 2 cents worth (and that's all it's worth!) to yourself. We in the KIND jamband community would appreciate it...thanks!

I didn't want to piss anyone off. The music is very sacred to us all, and I just feel that some bands should start small and work up, or progress. Some seem to bite off more then they can chew, but good lights and good drugs seem to obscure this from view. And I do respect anyone who gets up in front of other people(no matter how many or how few)and offers up something they created. I wasn't really attacking the band I said they are weak not that they suck. They are good players, they just seem lack the tightness and understanding required to really be worthy. I am way more worried about the state of the whole scene. As for spelling I am pretty shot, but maybe you wouldn't seem such a dick if you start out bye ing "partical or particle." I didn't resort to swearing, and would like to see us keep it civil in here. Lets just do point counter point. STOP THE HATE.

If you want to know why I don't like partical get a tape of them doing Floyds One of These days. Hacks, just two bit hacks. Now that is shitting on the band my friend.
And also look up the definition of sake.

i kind of wish they would stop allowing reviews. whoever phreakshow is, he just needs to shut the hell up. if you don't think cheese is a good jam band then you are an idiot. they can play any type of music out there with ease. i've never seen another band that can jam out of a latin song into a bluegrass song. stick to saying good things about the bands you like and not bashing the ones you don't like when they aren't even mentioned in an article.

anyone who compares sci and particle side by side saying they are playing in a saturated scene is crazy. sci is a milliam times better than particle, every member minus mosely is an absolute virtuoso on their instrument. particle goes off on mindless jams for way too long, sloppily. molitz is good but that it. i play the drums and have been constantly unimpressed by darren pujalet. the band which ive seen several tims has never shown any improvement from one year to the next. umphreys gets better everytime i see them. the fact is that most jambands suck or at least a dime a dozen. particle fits this desctiption. so does p-groove, in fact they are just horrible. cheese are masters of an eclectic art form which few can grasp. playing latin, bluegrass, rock, electronic, jazz and many more genres in one set is gifted performing.

Eventhough I like Particle I've seen them play sloppy shows and I think their bass player is mediocre at best. Also I hate the beret. That being said I have a ton of respect for all those guys as musicians. When it comes to seeing a live show there are many factors that make up the whole experience. It's easy to see a band once or twice and quickly pigeon hole them and assume that you're now familiar with their music. What's really tough is to go see a band that you think you don't like and maintain an open mind. I had to see UM 3-4 times before I realized that I really liked them. I'm going to see Ween w/ the Lips on Thursday and I'm going to try my best to like Ween.

Chances are if you frequent this site and go as far to post messages more than likely you have good taste in music. More than likely you have diverse tastes in music. We don't all have to like the same band and that's cool. I enjoy these discussions and please don't mistake my profanity as being upset or hateful. I'm a foul mouthed Baltimorean and I can't help myself.

As far as posting a couple times a day... Some of us have boring jobs! This is a great way to kill time.

I'd like to first address nfenne, to answer your question as to why I'm not taking advantage of this built-in fanbase? one word; integrity. I also want to say I agree with your point that if you want to call what particle does dance music then yes thay are more fun than the average DJ but I'm here to compare them to other bands. The main reason I feel the need to express these opinions is that I'm afraid bands like Particle and SCI's hardcore fanbase is mainly people who never venture outside of the jam scene and therefor have less to choose from. The two most amazing musical experiences I've ever had, not counting Big Cypress (thats a given)would be Phish-Hampton`97 and a Hip Hop show I saw in Miami last year, the entire Def-Jux Crew (el-P, Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock & Cage) performed on one stage, it was amazing I met Hip Hop heads who travel all over the country to Underground Hip Hop shows and don't even do drugs, I would say it was one of the most attentive crowds I've ever seen, I even saw people in the crowd pulling out notepads and writing lyrics. We are not the only game in town and knowing that can provide some perspective. Oh and nfenne I hope you enjoy Ween they are SICK!! Now I'd like to address furthepharmer and Kaiserbun, I apologize if I seem un-Kind but would you prefure I keep my opinions to myself and just keep smiling on the outside like everone else who actually agrees with me but instead acts phoney about it. Lets notice who resorts to name calling and who does not, every thing I say is in the form of an opinion. I think it is impotant for people to express both negative and positive opinions on here otherwise all we have is a Love-fest which has no validity.

I would like to first address phreakshow...the only thing i will be pulling out at shows from now on is my schlong. Once the show is over you can come back to jambase and write a LONG review on it. I must worn you that my schlong has been around the hard core scene and has gotten pretty beat up over the years...it wasnt til these fluffy jambands came around that my wounds have healed. :-)

What the fuck is your point Phreakshow? We all like different kinds of music. It seems that you're so into judging the music you hear that you forget to enjoy the vibe of the show. More makes up a good show than just whats going on up on stage. I've seen particle 4 times in the last year, and they constantly melt people's faces at the shows and never quit when it comes to building up momentum and then blowing the roof off. Ben is throwing it down on guitar to make up for Scott leaving, and Steve kills the keys everynight.

tightness, does not a band make. in fact, the ROLLING STONES have made a career out of playing slightly sloppy for oh...only more than fifty years! and yes, the stones still rock! not to say particle is sloppy or anything, just to point out that live groove/dance music still needs to maintain a certain level of looseness to succeed.

Dude you guys need to get lives and go see more shows... stop worrying about what people are saying online about a band and make your own opinion. Your never going to make someone like music, and your never going to force a good show down a disbelievers throat. Ive come to realize the truth, most fans of this scene think they are so "headier then thou" it ruins the experience for them. Whatever i walk in to every show trying to experience it as my first and last show ever, and i always have a great time. So you guys keep arguing online, im going to go catch sonic youth tommorow night ;).

Phistory: I definitely think that Zack Velmer from STS9 has the biggest sack.... (He fucks those drums UP!) With Kang in a close second. The only thing with Kang is that Im sure his penis is an inch and a half long. As for Steve Molitz he's just like Trey; he loves the spotlight and can't stand to not get any attenton. Go see Tea Leaf Green or Umphrey's or in Los Angeles (Steve's hometown) and you can bet he will just show up and sit in on keys for half a set. LOOK AT ME....ME ME ME ME. The New Guitar Player Ben is freaking great!!!!! Off the top of my head, he plays like Trey did in 1991!!! I was very impressed.. I am happy as hell I saw them, and they sandwiched groove is in the heart, between two of theirs. I will travel to see them again.. It was that good. The new guitar, has taken them to a higher level of playing, and he only had about 14 pedals in front of him. Dude was in the ZONE. I loved it.. Go see the new lineup with particle its wayyyyy better than the Hitchcock days... More SOUL... peace ya'll
