good pics. aside from having to hear o.a.r. for more than two straight seconds, it seems like 10klf was a blast. judging from the pictures it seems as if phil lesh looks a lot younger than mike gordon.

WOW! Looks pretty sweet! Great photos, all around. A brief, but not bad sumation of the events, too.

Man, oh man, Trey is one skinny white boy in the muscle-T at MMW, but from what I heard, he should sport that more often these days if it helps him blow the place up like he did!

I think that the pictures are great, but the article seems a little off. Music is interpretational, so what someone sees one way, others might see another. I saw the festival another way. It was awesome. Railroad Earth with Nershi, MMW with Trey, a Keller Williams Incident, and the Everyone Orchestra. With regards to G.R.A.B, I felt people were listening intently because it is new music and not everyone has heard it, unless you are downloading or traveling for shows. As for Phil's show, most the people are familiar with his or their music. As for me, I will be back for more next year, what a venue. Thanks 10KLF.

this review is disgraceful, how can one leave such a lacking review for what was probably the best festival of the year? bonnaroo gets a 10 page review while 10klf, which blew bonnaroo away gets one page of writing. no real mentionings of what went on no mention of how the breakfast blew weveryone away the first night, glowstick wars at sci, tea leaf green wowing everyone, keller incident, barely anythign written about phil or grab, nothing about trey w/ MMW, or raq to close out the fest..what gives?

Gee if I wasn't there, I would have no clue of how great this festival was. First subdued is the wrong adjective for G.R.A.B , boring is much more like it. I was literally falling asleep in me chair and the couple next to me who were Phish fans left. Nothing about the totally killer SCI set Thursday or the glowstick war that started the second set. Kimock-Perkins, The Everyone Orchestra, Hot Buttered Rum, Railroad Earth (especially Thursday's set w/Nershi), Umphrey's. The Mutaytor.... Like I said, glad I was there and not at the mercy of an obvious Trey freek to let me know about it. Objectivity and stepping out of your box is the key to good reviews. In defense, nice credits to the smaller and more local bands getting coverage but that would have done better in a separate review.

Great photos and great job Chris & Tobin

I also think the pictures are great (That's why I rated it a 3). However, I feel the article completely fails in terms of conveying how astounding this festival actually was. When I read this article I feel as if I'm reading a hurried and jummbled together book report that some high-schooler rushed through so he could go out and get drunk. In a summer where a number of festivals have been remembered more for thier police population rather than the actual music, 10klf stood out as one of the greatest festys of the summer. Nirvana. The article gives no mention of The Keller Williams Incident (Hell's Bells> America (Fuck Yea)> Hell's Bells), MMW w/ Trey (Let the Fucking Begin), the insane Railroad Earth set (The Railroad Dancing Incident), SCI (JOHNNY CASH!! and the war), Umphrey's McGee (I hate Phil for cutting into thier timeslot, because they blew him out of the water), or the amazing festival closer RAQ. Unlike the author, I felt that everyone was sitting down and listening to G.R.A.B. because they were playing the same old thing on a different day. (If I hear Drifting one more time I'm gonna snap) I also felt that O.A.R. didn't display thier improv-chops at all. I watched the bass player basically beat on the same five notes the entire set. Other than those two acts, the music at the festy was top notch and nothing less than spectacular. So many things to talk about; the fifty-man drum circle w/ fire dancers, the spectacle of trying to get the amazing Pollack prints, the festival taxi service, Kimock throwing around the fire baton at Mutaytor, new sound Kinetix, I could go on and on. It amazes me this writer got through the entire weekend in one page. Next time, put in some more thought for the people that wern't lucky enough to be there. If you wern't there this year, be there next. 10KLF!

P.S. Anyone catch that debut from Keller "A Day at the Office" where he slams Blender magazine. Amazing. 100% K-Dub.

good story, but I wish some of these young kids would do their homework before they write. the solo acoustic number that Trey and Mike performed was not a song called "hands across the water". it's not even a Beatles song. It's a Paul McCartney Song called "Uncle Albert/Admiral Hallsey"

Sounds awesome. I'm so disapointed I missed it this year. Last year kicked ass, and this year's lineup was way better. I'm super bummer about missing Trey w/ MMW, that would have been great. And of course Cheese. I'm about to have a cheese-less summer. It sucks. God damn job/responsibilities!

First off, thank you Superkick for what you said. Honestly how can you write the shortest, most brief review possible for one of the best festivals of the entire summer? That's terrible... There was no mention of any of the smaller bands that played the Saloon stage (i.e. Down Lo, RAQ). Overall, an amazing fest, but definatley a slacking review. The pictures were great... Also, Shanky, I heard that Umphrey's flight was delayed a half hour and that played a part in why they changed up the time slots that day for the main stage, so if that is true, don't hate on Phil, even gods such as Umphreys can't control the weather. The only complaint of the whole fest that i would have is that they had way to many 4 wheelers and golf carts polluting the fest, it was way annoying having to pull off the side cuz a caravan of 4 wheelers were coming through, and hey Shanky, "day at the office" was absolutley hilarious and like you said, "100% K-dub". And last comment, no mention of The Breakfast rockin out hard on Wednesday?! The article should have at least commented on how amazing they were Without the Keys player, they were sick!

Yo iamkickinit,
Thanks for the info on why UM was postponed. I wasn't tryin to hate on Phil, I've just seen him 5 times this summer already (with the same ole' G.R.A.B.) and hadn't seen Umphrey's once, so I was amped up for the UM set. BTW... Anyone catch the Phil shows where Trey guested during second set? Amazing! Especially the Scranton (ChinaCatSunflower) and Essex Co, VT (Midnight Hour w/ Mike, Trey, and Page!)... quite delicious... DL those shows if you don't got em. Peace!

Frankly, this is a lame review. Not only does it really avoid discussing the music it is not coming from a objective perspective either. Not mentioning MMW's set with Trey sitting in (argubally the set of the weekend)is willifully negligent. Kayceman- you should have let me review this festival when I asked...

This was the festival of the summer! It was way beyond just Trey and G.R.A.B. The late night scene was an east coast experience with Assembly of Dust, Raq, and the Breakfast. Saloon stage was where the magic was happening! I met so many good people and good bands in that little spot. It was an energetic place, as well as a good escape from the heat!
Local Chicago bands FGC and Cornmeal were off the hook, and little known Green Lemon from Boulder, who played during Umphrey's was a dance party and a half!
The festival was a wonderful experience. The beer was damn good too (Summit from MN and Sprecher from WI). I appreciated the excellent photography, but unfortunately, the article did not sum up nearly as much as what went on.
I too have been waiting for this article since I got home from the festival, and i was dissapointed to read so much about Trey!
Phil will always throw down, as will SCI, but the beauty of these festivals is to be able to check out new and amazing music that doesn't come out to your home town. I took advantage of that and raged it with my family and was at the festival of the summer!
Fuckin' A 10K!!

Very weak review, but about what I expected for JamBase. Take the time to find someone who is actually willing to write a full magazine article style review for a major festival like 10KLF or just give us the pictures by themselves and let us fans fill everyone else in by posting comments.

Luckily, I was at the festival for the third year, and it rocked. But if I had not been there I would have been pretty upset with the lack of substance in this article. Aside from the last paragraph (which was well written and moving) this article lacked the ability to capture the festival and the performances. SCI suprised me and played a great show (awesome setlist), TLG rocked in the cozy confined of The Barn, & MMW w/ Trey lit the place up(let the fucking begin) just to name a few.

I think the picture of the boys in Tea Leaf Green above is an indication of what they think of this article - 3 thumbs down.

I'm not sure if the reviewer actually attended the same festival that I did. This festival is top-notch and you just need to go to the 10klf myspace page to see how much EVERYBODY enjoyed it. Everything about the 10KLF was fantastic...from the lineup, the performances, the hassle-free environment, the freedom, the venue, the staff, the camping, and the great vibe that can't be replicated anywhere else.

It would have been nice also if the reviewer had included more details about the artists' sets. The Phil & Friends show was out of this world..but there were no details to speak of in this review.

Good photos, though.

I'm sure you can find another jambase person that attended this show that could provide a more accurate report of the best festival in the country.

To all those critical of this review:

As the Editor-in-Chief here at JamBase, and the guy who assigned 10KLF to Janie, I'd like to chime in. Not every article needs to be - or should be - 8,000 words. I told Janie to keep it around 2,000 words. I asked her for an overview, not a play-by-play. To be honest, it's a lot harder to write a concise, tight review that covers the feel of an event as opposed to going show by show, note by note. I read and write articles all day long, this was a good one.

Wow, I can't believe the negative response to this article. I personally love that it's not a 10 page review like bonnaroo...because suddenly this fest could start acting like bonnaroo. i don't want to see this perfect fest go the way of the bloated, overpacked overextended Roo. I have already seen a slight decline in the kindness of pholks there. Everyone there remembers it how they want to, and everyone saw different sets. This is a getting a bit phantasytour here.

But personally, I think this festival was too great to just be limited to 2,000 words. And it probably was rough on Janie considering all the amazing stuff goin on...

The idea of a review is to make sure most of the bands get covered. The reviewer should be able to paint a picture for those that couldn't make it to the fest so after they read it they feel like they were there themselves.

Kayce- It is very respectable of you to stick up for your reviewers, but you and them have a responsibility to the readers, however critical they are, because without them you don't have this web site. If you read the reviews for all the big festivals this summer, no matter how well written or how many bands they write about, people will comment about how one band or another was left out. But to only have one page of written material for a four day festival with 50+ bands cheats the readers who couldn't make it.
Just a reminder, as the editor your responsibility is to the readers. You should know by know what they want to read. I have seen you comment on postings for two of the biggest summer music fests (10KLF and Bonnaroo) sticking up for the writers. They are a direct reflection of you and this website. You need to give the readers a little more credit and listen to what they are posting.

I would have to say that my complaint about this review would not be about the lack of length but rather the lack of musical content. I understand that you can't mention every single band in a review and that it is hard to please everyone but there were major acts & sit ins and things of that nature that were completely left out of this review. In my opinion, I think people reading this website are more interested in what went on musically than what the crowd was doing at every second of each set. Honestly it seems like this reviewer did more people-watching instead of music-listening. But lucky for me I was there and did all of the listening for myself!! Better luck next time Janie.

I have been to 10k all four years and this review only scraped the surface. As a writer myself, I understand that Janie's task (as stated) would be a daunting one to do in a short amount of space. Having said that, OAR was not even close to being one of the bands people that I spoke to mentioned. The Mutaytor was very memorable for the Thursday night folks, and not mentioning the collaborations is a major fo-pah, because we, who eagerly read these reviews, know that's what we are looking for in a festival, the unexpected. Phil, UM, and SCI were fantastic. If you want to see some of the Trey+MMW, go to youtube.com
:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6SNAXJrG8Y

there are 4 short clips.
For the future, make sure the writers know their audience, because this is not a rolling stone review site and we know how specific and critical fans can be around here.
Good luck 10klf, keep going strong next year.

This was the best festival I've ever attended, and no worries about it becoming a B'roo. If there's a bigger ticket demand next year it will be capped before 20K.
