2006 has been a year of notable collaborations for Matisyahu. Earlier this summer he was tapped by Dave Matthews to open several of his U.S. tour dates, and by Sting to open a performance in Tel Aviv, Israel. Starting Aug. 8, Matisyahu will headline a new string of dates featuring a diverse lineup of acts including Michael Franti & Spearhead, Keller Williams, The Polyphonic Spree, and Gomez, as well as a co-headlining bill with The Flaming Lips Sept. 16 in TX. Completing his sweep of the festival circuit, he will also stop at the Austin City Limits music festival on Sept. 17, joining a lineup that includes Tom Petty, Van Morrison, Los Lonely Boys, Gnarls Barkley, The Raconteurs, and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley. The drum trio Street Drum Corps will join Matisyahu on every date, playing nightly outside the venue prior to show time and in between sets.

Matisyahu’s most recent album, Youth, has earned raves both here and abroad for its seamless and earnest mixture of reggae, dub, hip-hop, and rock, achieving gold status in the US just weeks after its March release (his second gold record this year).

Unbelievable, alright. Maybe its because he's mtv-friendly enough to attract the squares. Is it just me or is this guy the most pretentiously self-righteous a-hole you've ever heard. "Oh yeah, but do you listen to the music, it's awesome?" Yeah I have, and there is musical talent there. But I'm sick of some hasidic rastafarian with a jesus christ complex spreading his message of mass confusion to my children and the rest of the world. You know what I want for Channukah? I want matisyahu to give up opening his mouth for forty days and nights, aw screw it how bout 40 years

You got hate in your heart?

Let it out! :-)

Not sure what you're talking about though. As far as him spreading his message of mass confusion, he sings about NOT doing drugs(including alcohol), about judaism, and about consciousness in our world. Considering music of today, it's not the worst of things for children and the world to hear. Even if you want to call that "confusing" anymore than ANY OTHER songwriter out there, welcome to our world, it's a bit confusing.

As far as your other comments about hasidic rastas with christ complexes, and that whole Channukah spiel, that's borderline hateful, good for you!

I get the biggest kick out of you jambasers that go to an article you hate just to talk trash. Spend your time on what you enjoy, don't waste it on what you don't. That's if you want to have fun down here, that is.

Whatever each his own.I wish I knew what the other musicians in the group looked there even an actual permanent group???? Maybe he just rotates his musicians. It's quite obvious who's the important one in the band, and maybe the rest of the band likes it that way. Cameras always on him, the biggest mistake one can make. Maybe when he fizzles away, they could join some 311 cover band. NICE!!!!

true, true, he is very full of himself. however, so are many, many musicians. i do feel as if the only purpose they have is to create and play music. i do not need their political, social, or any other view that they have. if they say the, i merely ignore what they say, but if they stop making good music, i think they can disappear. matisyahu still makes good music, so i dont care what he says. i merely do not listen.

Yeah dude is a little pompous. I've even heard rumors that he isn't even a straight up hasidic jew. I will give the man credit for making music with conviction though. It's not easy to put out music with such blatant religious connotations, and in a world where I think alot of people could use a little God in their life that to me is not such a bad thing.

Matisyahu brings together so many different genres of music, too many people can't seem to understand or be open-minded enough appreciate him or his music. He IS one of the only artists today that strives to send and incorporate positive messages throughout his music. Don't even begin to trash him or his music just because you can't grasp such deep meaning and see past his image. All people can relate and be inspired by his music wether they are religious or not! It is ironic to me that to Matisyahu is catching so much flack as of late. TO call someone a pretentions self-righteous a-hole is very harsh. Here is a man who has traveled a path many of us have traveled (some may still be on it)and has found a way to live his life in peace and happiness. He is very open about his beliefs and he stays true to his covictions. While I may not agree with is belief system, I can respect his commitment and his talent.

As far as spreading mass confusion, all music is filled with ideas and the beliefs of its authors. I am not a particular fan of say, Michael Franti and some of his beliefs, yet I accept others enjoy him. There are many music afficianados that enjoy Matisyahu, yet to resort to calling him a rastafarian with a jesus complex is sinking to a new low. If your not a fan of Matisyahu, don't listen. But to throw negative comments around, does'nt seem to freindly to me.

RIGHT ON DEDHED! The first time I saw this guy was at Bonnaroo '05 and I was really impressed. When I saw him at All Good the same year he tore it up. Saw him at a small club back in Baltimore and overall still a good show. I noticed that some squares (read: college kids and non-music lovers) started showing up. Then after he releases his studio album he comes back to a bigger club in Baltimore to deliver his weakest musical performance yet! This time the whole club is full of kids that I go to shows to get away from and Matisyahu spent more time preaching than performing. I really liked this guy at first and I was willing to ignore his message because I liked the music. Now I'm willing to concede that this guy is a gimmick and the best part about him is his backing band.

When Matisyahu gets on stage he lights it on fire, connecting to nearly everyone in a crowd. And people feel that it's real. That's no small accomplishment for someone coming from a philosophical background many don't know or understand. In my humble opinion, this is the reason for his success. It's ridiculous to attack his beliefs or message, considering most artists sing about 'personal' feelings or beliefs, and whose to say whose message has any real truth in it. Matisyahu expresses his music with honesty and heart, so it connects.

just thought i'd say that even tho he has a couple lyrics that briefly condemn drug use he has said in an interview that when people take psychedelic substances it opens up their soul and the music hits them ways in which it couldn't otherwise (paraphrase). anyways, if you've seen his live show you'd like him, his guitar player is way psychedelic and don't even mess with his voice. Matisyahu is a great artist, and a great addition to the music biz...who cares if good artists are popular. everyone knows phish and the dead.

Well...Matthew Paul Miller a.k.a Matisyahu is not a Rastafarian. You don't have to be a Rastafarian to play reggae music. He follows Orthodox Judaism. Orthodox Judaism does not allow self-inflicted harm to the body. This is why he stopped puffing. Before he was known as Matisyahu, Matthew Miller followed Phish on tour and smoked plenty of herb. Weed smoke is still smoke, and lungs don't like smoke.

The following is from ""...
Matisyahu is a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic community in the Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. Matisyahu was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania and his family eventually settled in White Plains, New York. He was brought up a Reconstructionist Jew, and for some time during those years he played by the alias "MC Truth" for MC Mystic's Soulfari band. He eventually turned to Orthodox Judaism, becoming a baal teshuva around 2001 through Chabad of Washington Square and began playing with the Jewish band Pey Dalid. Matisyahu studied Torah seriously in Hadar Hatorah, a yeshiva for returnees to Judaism, and he wrote and recorded his first album while still a student there. He counts among his musical inspirations Bob Marley, Phish, and Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, while giving credit to Rabbi Simon Jacobson's book "Toward A Meaningful Life" for the lyrical inspiration to the title song of his new album, Youth.

P.S. Saying you talked to "real rastas" about someone you've never met and then making judgements is, well...kinda weak.

First off I am an atheist. full on, hardcore atheist, so screw all that religious crap, that's where i'm coming from. and the reason his music is confusing is because HE doesn't even realize what he is yet he's pushing his ideas on thousands of children, and finally, it's all everybody's opinion anyway. so peace out hippies, and by the way mango nutbag - dedhed 3:16 says I just kicked your ass. "phish is dead, go take some oxy and cry" brilliant quote to imply matisyahu and phish belong in the same sentence. this guy has as much to say as any religious nut does. and his orthodox jewish beliefs make about as much sense as rastafarianism. study either a bit if you don't know what i am talking about so i will just let people like him debate over who has the best imaginary friend(God), and you can think him to be a mystical, philosophical person that has somehow tapped into something you can't attain and therefore should be listened to. at least bob marley's preachings were cloaked in some wonderful music.

Not to beat a dead dog even more, but I feel that Matisyahu is just a marketable person like someone had mentioned before. His hasidic jewish influenced lyrics clash really badly with the ideals of rastafarianism so he should avoid that field as for reggae anyone should be able to compose and play any music they like.. but Matisyahu's music is just another religious sensation like Creed. whack.

He comes from a rich white family, half of his band isn't even jewish. He's an average singer. It's all a gimic. Do you know that he broke with his original label J-dub which is a non profit music group for a major lable once he blew up? Did you know that he and other band members were fighting over in court who gets the extra money from record sales? I bet he couldn't even tell you what Judaism is even though he literally sells himself as "Jewish". Waste of time.

If Matisyahu annoys you, dont listen to his music. He sings about what he believes, and he is able to connect with his audience on much more than a musical level.
If you are afraid that what Matisyahu believes will somehow destroy your children's minds and create mass confusion, then you should get offline and figure out how to raise your children so they are capable of formulating their own beliefs out of solid morals and values.
And in response to Ciffy: Matis is a Hasidic Jew, not a Rasta. He doesn't contradict himself because he sings about what he believes. And whether or not you believe in God, to say that he "rants" and spews "crap" in his lyrics is completely wrong and it is evident that you do not comprehend his lyrics. Matis sings about peace and morality in the world (something not many artists today sing about), and whether or not Orthodox Judaism makes sense to you, his message is something we all should embrace to some degree.

hey to "lovemusicfood" why does it matter that matisyahu is from a "rich white family" and "half his band isn't even jewish". because first of all, many hasidic orthodox jews are white, second of all, so what if people in his band arn't jewish, you don't have to be jewish to listen to his music and enjoy it. he's just jammin and making music about what he believes in. If you don't like it, you really don't have to listen to it.
