A shared moment of consciousness with the band and the audience – that's what I'm going for.

-Steve Kimock

Steve Kimock by Jennifer Brunner

Kimock is clearly an advocate for reaching out to and absorbing all types of musical experiences. "It's one of those things you have to do as a musician to keep that perspective," Kimock states, speaking about playing in several different bands and projects. "You have to collaborate with people, go through that learning curve, take direction and give direction – all of that is part of the package. Musicians need balance in their musical life – it's a fantastic thing to have." Kimock understands that the best way to learn and grow is to play with other people, to share creative experiences, ideas, and knowledge about music, art, or anything else in life. All of those experiences stay with you and contribute to future endeavors, whether they are new projects or old ones revisited, like the recent Zero reunion this past March.

Kimock & Donna Jean (Zero)
"A Denver promoter called and asked for a Zero gig," Kimock explains. "I didn't think it was possible at first, but it wasn't that difficult to get through to make it happen – everybody was into it. It was kind of Blues Brothers style." Kimock also credits Zero's "unbelievably loyal fan base" for the reunion, appropriately called the Chance in a Million Reunion.

The lineup this time around consisted of Kimock, Anton, Martin Fierro (sax), Liam Hanrahan (bass), Pete Sears (keys), Judge Murphy (vocals), and special guests Donna Jean Godchaux -Mackay (vocals), Arnie Green (vocals, guitar), and Steve's son John Morgan Kimock on drums.

For the Zero reunion, the vibe was positive all around. "Sometimes when a band stops working, the sting of it lingers," Kimock says. "But you just have to get your ass on stage. For me, and I think for everyone else, I remembered all the good things." Kimock remains positive and open-minded about the future of Zero, declaring, "The lineup is not fixed, and the future [of Zero] is every bit as kaleidoscopic in its personnel as its past has been," Kimock explains. True to his word, Chip Roland will likely replace Pete Sears on keys at the Harmony Festival. "We are working with a pool of players, a Zero family tree."

Steve Kimock :: By Tobin Voggesser
A family tree indeed, one that now extends to Steve's son, John Morgan Kimock. "We work on stuff that's off the page, like attitudes he'll need to have to deal with people in the business," Kimock says about playing with his son. And while the elder Kimock is no rookie to the road, he expresses concern for musicians his son's age who want to tour. "With gas prices and the economy, it's almost at the end of an era. To put a bunch of guys in a car and play everywhere until people know who they are – that's very difficult to do these days. Kids, it's not getting any easier."

The upcoming Harmony Festival will be a homecoming of sorts for Kimock and Zero. An East Coast native who recently moved back to Pennsylvania with his family, Kimock loves to return to the West Coast, where he lived for twenty-plus years, and revisit his old stomping grounds. "Anytime I get to go back to the Bay area, it feels like a homecoming. Harmony has always been such a local thing for me, for a long time I lived twenty minutes away from it." When asked to give advice to the festivalgoers who have never seen Zero before, Kimock exclaimed, "Wear a belt!"

Steve Kimock :: By Jake Krolick
The Harmony Festival itself is a very progressive, eco-friendly festival and delivers a positive message through music, arts, ecology, and healthful living. Judging from the lineup, the surroundings, and the overall significance of the festival, this year's attendees will certainly not be disappointed.

The motivation to play and to experience music comes from many different sources. Some of these sources, like the desire to be wealthy, usually blind musicians from the true beauty of the craft and corrupt the creative art form into a money-hungry business machine. Other sources of motivation are often unexplainable; the musician simply plays music because he has to and understands on some level that by expressing creativity and emotion through music, the musician contributes positive and creative energy to the whole of existence, and that energy travels to other people's ears and inspires them to do the same. Perhaps the latter is the definition of a successful musician.

While discussing the future of his career, Kimock mentions putting out a music book. "I have been putting material together to write a music book by year's end, which will contain some alternative thinking on instructional material, some philosophical aspects, and when it gets out there, it will piss off some traditionalists!" Let's keep our fingers crossed. We'd all love to hear the secrets of his success.

Steve has brought himself into his own class when it comes to playing. I've been a hardcore listner for some years now and i see him every time i get a chance. I live in PA, just bout 40min from Bethlehem, so i have the privlage to catch some ubscure shows like the wild flower gigs. Its truly a blessing ever time im able to attend. When talking with steve personally you'd imagine that he might be a hard guy, but thats not the case at all. He is humble and kind, and will talk your ear off if he gets the chance.
one love

It has been such a pleasure to have watched Mr. Kimock grow and expand on his musical talents over the last 15 years. With each new endeavour he undertakes, he has delighted me with an eclectic blend of musical styles each compounding on the last. For me, it all started with Zero, and it will be great to return to my Kimock roots with the upcoming shows, but I am always excited to hear a new line-up when Steve is involved. Steve not only pushes the boundary of his capabilities, but pushes the envelope the musical stratosphere for all of us. Thank you.

Steve is the man. I had the pleasure of playing with him at the Georgia Theater in 1998 when he was in Zero and I was immediately struck with his playing. I ended up doing the entire summer 98 Otherones tour and at that point I pretty much considered him my favorite living guitar player. Since then I have grown VERY fond of SKB, the new years shows were some of the best I have ever seen by any performer anywhere. I am anticipating a wonderful weekend at Harmony Fest! I havent seen or listened to Zero since 98, so it will be nice. GO SEE STEVE KIMOCK

There are very few people in the world with the musical talent, humility, intellect and harmony that Kimock embodies. His musical direction keeps his lineups fresh, his songs progressive, and his chops tight (although this guy transcends simple riff work). If you haven’t seen him live, you owe yourself the favor. I think the music community is finally awakening to the prowess of Kimock, a prowess many musicians have known for years—the man’s resume dwarfs the best, but his new CD and lineup with Mathis, Holmes, and Walter is simply unsettling in its fury. Many times I hear Kimock unofficially billed as the musician’s musician, an adage that is not only oversimplified but one that minimizes the impact this man can have on one’s ear/mind/soul—go see this guy (my friend’s and I like to call him the wizard) On a side note, ( I am a younger fan) the first time I heard Kimock play was on the legendary Phil and Phriends show where Trey and Page played with them (4/15-16-17/99) and I kept thinking that’s NOT Trey—who is that guy tweaking my mind?

Steve Kimock is an amazing guitarist. His musical direction tells a story. Kimock puts on a legitimate show and if you want a gurantee in getting your moneys worth this flat out musician might be one of your only bets.

Hell yeah! Kimock is the man, and his new installment of SKB is truly groovin'. I smoked a cig with him and Robert Walters before one of his shows, and they are amazing people. I love these guys, and they even sat through 2 hours of darkness in Boulder to play. The man is a stand-up guy, and he doesnt get covered enough. Fuckin right man

SK can only enhance your life. As his very good friend used to call him, he is, a real Eudemon.
Listen Here to this man in whatever format, chance, occasion, ensemble, time it may be...truly, like so many here have said, you really are doing yourself a favor.
He certainly has done me many, and been the blissful conduit for introspective & communal experiences, like no others! I'm definitely a better, smarter person today for having happened upon him, though late in his career, but whenever... am I eternally grateful.
May the Gods & Universe continue to shine upon us with his beautiful musical, meditative presence,
& he live Many Green Rivers long in happiness, health & prosper!

I'm lucky enough to live near Bethlehem, Pa and have seen Steve Kimock 7 times. He is just awesome.... I've seen him in a tent in Ilick's Mill park a couple of times and in Bethlehem at the Icehouse with John Morgan. Also in the Trocadero in Phila 3 or 4 times- and he blows me away every time. Possibly my favorite, though, is a DVD that I have of Steve with Phil Lesh, Barry Sless, Mookie Siegel, Billy Kreutzman, and David Nelson. This was at the Warfield on 7/2/99 and 7/3/99. As far as I know, that particular version/band lasted only those two days in '99. For me it's magic. I'm a fan of most of the post-Dead Phil bands - but this particular band was my favorite and I'm lucky enough to have very good audio and video of one of those shows. Great tune selection and monster jamming with three of my favorite pickers working it out together. Anyone who hasn't yet seen Steve Kimock play should be watching closely- and doing what it takes to see the man. I've got tickets to see the Dark Star Orchestra this summer at MusikFest and I'm hoping that our native from Bethlehem joins them onstage as he has occasionally done in the past. Live music- it's the real thing.....
