LOOK FOR THEM ON ABC'S JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE (May 18), AT BONNAROO (June 16-18), ON TOUR WITH DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, AND HEADLINING DATES COAST TO COAST

Safety In Numbers, which just hit stores on April 4, 2006, is the third studio album by the musically muscular and relentlessly inventive Umphrey's McGee. For this highly anticipated release, personal chaos provided plenty of fuel for an explosion of collaborative, creative energy. From top to bottom, in its carefully constructed yet deeply felt notes, Safety In Numbers is strong and coolly calculated, yet easy-going and improvisational -- an aural representation of life's balancing act. Without sacrificing their endearing playfulness, Umphrey's McGee - dare we say it - is growing up.

The album features guest performances by saxophone sensation Joshua Redman and veteran rocker, Huey Lewis. Album artwork is by famed album designer Storm Thorgerson.

In support of the new release, Umphrey's McGee is on tour this spring and summer. Just back from their first European tour, Umphrey's now hits the U.S., including a Midwest run of dates opening for the Dave Matthews Band and a Bonnaroo Music Festival performance for the fourth year in a row. But first, look for Umphrey's McGee at headlining shows coast to coast.

It's been a quick rise for Chicago's Umphrey's McGee. Their virtuoso playing and edgy songcraft recently compelled Rolling Stone to choose Umphrey's "a band to watch" in their annual Hot Issue. Relix magazine put them on the cover of their December 2004 issue and the prestigious Chicago Music Awards bestowed Umphrey's McGee with the coveted Best Rock Entertainer of the Year award. Booked coast to coast by the Monterey Peninsula Booking Agency, the band recently sold out two nights at Chicago's Aragon Ballroom, two nights at Irving Plaza, San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium, the list goes on.

first off DMB sucks. They are not worthy of umphrees and it angers me that they are even ganna play with them. umphrees is a good jamband but i have lost a lot of respect for them

spearhead... atleast spell Umphrey's correct, and I do not agree with you. As a long time time die hard DMB fan and for the last four or five years moe. and UM fan. I feel this is an incredible chance for them... moe. did it and I never lost any respect for them, nor did they get the "frat boy/screaming teeny bopper" fans that DMB has been sadly tagged with. UM may be the next best thing to hit this jam scene, and judging by Anchor Drops and SIN(Safety In Numbers)their ability to change is incredible and I can only hope for the best and tons more to come from them.

why would them playing with DMB be such a bad thing, it will show those fans what they are missing and maybe turn their heads further from the mainstream that DMB occupys. Mad respect to Umphreys!!

spearhead kid, first off you can't even spell umphrey's and second of all who cares what you think of DMB. the fact is there are a hell of a lot of new people that will get exposed to UM's music because the umph is fortunate enough to open for such a highly popular band. and i think the boys deserve this exposure because they are one of the hardest working bands on the scene today. i'm glad they're opening for dave and i hope it helps them sell out more shows and sell more records because these boys deserve it.

UM will rule the world in 2008. ne way, I really like the new album, cant wait to see them at canopy club for 2 nights and this summer. I particularly appreciate "words" off S.I.N. Thank you UM for another great album and cudos on their growing and devoted fan base.
PS- I've been a big fan for the past few years, and i can say that the dmb talk is getting a little pathetic. I like dmb (along with STS9, claypool, phish and rage against the machine) but not nearly as much as i like UM. But this article hardly mentions dmb. Nobody is comparing their music or the bands devotion to their fans. I personally hope the world listens to UM everyday so one day dmb will open for them. another point is that jimi hendrix, zepplin all headlined big venues an it wasnt that cheap to see them either, and their musical accomplishments are monumental, so all you haten ass bitches stick to your shitty local bar bands, i'll go see some music worth hearing. Peace and love!

Lollie freakin daah.....who cares? Has the jamband scene really turned into this? Is this what we have to look forward to in the jamband scene...DMB headlining with Umphrey's McGee? Why don't we just start holding hands and skipping at concerts too? Is this softrock? You might as well put this music on 103 lite FM, thats how much it doesn't rock! What's next? Start singing about GOD, so they can reach that target audience too? It is what it is, but I wish it wasn't!

Not that im a HUGE DMB fan, but all this critism is stupid? Why can't UM open up for the DMB for 5 shows? There is nothing wrong with that. Have any of you even been to a DMB show and seen the band play a 25 minute long jam? Well i have, and it was good. So stop bitching.

LOL spearheadkid... That is just a unintelligent comment. First off Dave Matthews Band is incredibly talented both in their playing and the songwriting. While you may not agree with their image and their annoying drunk fans(I know not all of them)you certainly should respect their ability. As for Umphrey's opening for them WOW what great exposure for a band that really works hard on composition and style. I wish them the best and look forward to seeing them soon. Spearhead is ok too as long as Franti can change it up a bit....tired of the same speeches and rants.

In the words of Michael Franti, (Spearheadkid, you oughta know this) "Everyone deserves music" The point being, music is music is music. I personally enjoy anything that has talent, charisma, and direction, whether it be DMB, Umphrey's, Mozart, Incubus, Tim McGraw, Phish, Dead, Pearl Jam, Yonder..... I am forever puzzled by the title Jam band anyway. Jerry is probably having a coronary upstairs about this. Enjoy whatever music you choose, but don't dictate who is worthy of each other.

As for the album.....BUY IT. It's their best yet. I have loved these guys since day one and this is one fine piece of work. Props to them, and I am anxiously awaiting their Boston gig.

DMB had a poll up on there website for about 3 months, allowing fans to vote for who they wanted to open shows for them this summer. Umphrey's Mcgee, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Robert Randolph and THe family Band, and soulive all got the spots. So not bad company for umph. and good exposure overall. oh yeah to spancewrangler. In 2001 your band wsp opened for dave. so go to hell with your comments.

to green024: UM and DMB were both shitty local bar bands once, everyones gotta start somewhere. If it wasn't for people supporting them when they were playing in bars, they wouldn't be where they are today. Don't forget where you come from.

DMB rocks and so does UM. Lenno, Letterman, Kimmel... they all suck, but, hey, if there's going to be good music, I'll tune in for the last 10 minutes! I remember the DMB openers poll. My votes were UM, Gov't Mule, New Monsoon, The Assembly of Dust, and Railroad Earth. Wouldn't it be awesome to see Boyd tradin' licks with Tim Carbone? I'd give my left arm to see that!
Anyway, when I voted, I assumed they'd be bringing one of these great opening acts (and they are all great) to my home town. Sadly, they're skippin' right over Albuquerque this tour :(

I agree with all of the positive comments about Um playing with DMB. By the way, don't forget that Alpine is one of the best venues in the country (during the summer months anyway). Go and support the hardest working band that we love. Turn those drunken frat boys, and those sexy little aberettes onto our favorite band. Um is going to be huge, whether it is today, tomorrow, or next year, there will be a day when Um takes a young hard-working band up to the mainstream with them. I only wish that DMB were bringing them to Phoenix, since we have been snubbed on their spring west-coast club tour. Um - If you guys are reading this, PLEASE COME BACK TO THE MARQUEE!!! AND KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!

Musically talented anyways, I believe that UM is the best band on the jam scene today. Jake Cinninger can rip a motherfucking guitar.

Umphrey's is the next big thing. Don't miss out on it. Oh and DMB has been washed up since that cd Crash I believe. They are about as jam as Elton John, who I am a fan of. In due time all those 21 to 32 yr olds will realize how much money they are STILL wastin on DMB concerts that still aren't quite what they might have been 12 yrs ago. Can't wait to see NMAS and DBT soon, WP come back to GA soon.

Umphrey's is the best band on the scene today. I don't watch Kimmel but I'm glad Umphrey's is getting exposure. As for DMB, while Dave is a pop star kind of guy, everyone else in his band can really play. He is the best mainstream publicizer of jam bands, as his openers include have included Robert Randolph, Soulive, Keller, Galactic, Panic, the Flecktones, moe., KDTU, Gov't Mule, and Tea Leaf Green. Also, if you don't have Safety in Numbers buy it NOW!
