BLACK SABBATH, MILES DAVIS, BLONDIE, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, SEX PISTOLS
INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME

Miles Davis
Legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath, jazz hero Miles Davis, new-wave pop sensation Blondie, southern rock stalwarts Lynyrd Skynyrd and punk band Sex Pistols were all inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last evening (March 15) during a ceremony at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (highlights will be aired March 21 on VH1).

Metallica inducted Sabbath and also covered "Hole in the Sky" and "Iron Man" with drummer Lars Ulrich proclaiming, "I hereby not only acknowledge but scream from every fucking rooftop that Black Sabbath is and always will be synonymous with heavy metal."

The evening ended with a salute to New Orleans featuring Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint and The Band's Robbie Robertson, who performed Toussaint's "Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?" and the Fats Domino staple "Walking to New Orleans."

This is IMO a weak class. The fact that Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols and Blondie were inducted when other truly worthy nominees, Joe Tex, Five Royales, Butterfield Blues Band, were not is scandalous. It's all about selling catalog.

Miles Davis weak? Black Sabbath weak? Man, i generally tend to stay outta the comments box (unless i'm particularly moved), I just don't know how anyone could put Joe Tex or Five Royales above Miles Davis or Black Sabbath (or Sex Pistols or Blondie for that matter). To each their own, but MILES DAVIS! Anyway, i couldn't resist.

Kayceman, I trust we can agree to disagree. I'm gonna guess that you don't have any Joe Tex or Five Royales in your music collection. Mr. Joe Tex had at least 20 hits on the soul chart, and is a charter member of Atlantic Record's Soul Clan (Otis Redding, Ben E. King, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke & Joe Tex). The Five Royales are THE major influence on James Brown. Their leader/guitarist, Lowman Pauling, was a major-league songwriter and an influential guitarist. The Butterfield Band had two guitarist, Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop. Need I say more. As for Miles, even Ahmet Ertegun (chairman of the HOF) was quoted in the NY Times saying that he personally voted against his induction because Miles had nothing to do with rock&roll. Personally, I love Miles, and they can induct him anywhere they want. I'm OK with Skynyrd, and play their music often. They could ditch that Confederate flag, which some people find offensive. Anyone who says "Miles had nothing to do with rock and roll" has obviously never listened to A Tribute to Jack Johnson, Live-Evil, or Agharta.

yo dumbasses, miles davis should be put in his own hall of fame. He is the greatest musician ever to live. He was constantly changing his music. Bitches Brew....

big_blue, Congratulations. You're the first person to ever refer to Mr. Ahmet Ertegun as a "dumbass." It's a fair question whether Miles belongs in the HOF. Just because Miles was constantly changing doesn't mean he was changing for the better. Many of us much prefer his work from the 50s and 60s. Believe me, Miles blowing through a wah-wah pedal with his back turned to the audience was not all that great. I saw his shows at Fillmore East, and much preferred the opening acts (like Roland Kirk or Leon Thomas). But I didn't start this thread of comments to rag on Miles. It's my opinion that Sabbath, Sex Pistols and Blondie are weak inductees. The opinion about Miles belongs to Mr. Ahmet "Dumbass" Ertegun, the founder of Atlantic Records and chairman of the R'n'R Hall of Fame.

Miles created new sounds because he could'nt keep up with Dizzie. He new he would never be that good so he had to try something different.
