In a genre known for collaboration, The Everyone Orchestra has created the platform for accessible improvisational music and the impressive list of collaborators reads like a who's who of jamband music. The group is coming together again for the Third Annual Pangaea Project Benefit Concerts at The Crystal Ballroom on Friday and Saturday, April 14 and 15, 2006.
The Everyone Orchestra
The roster of performers includes Jon Fishman of Phish, Jason Hann of String Cheese Incident, Jamie Masefield of Jazz Mandolin Project, Reggie Watts from Maktub/Soulive, Kai Eckhardt of Garaj Mahal, local musicians Tony Furtado and Scott Law, Everyone Orchestra founder Matt Butler, and a number of other musicians and performers.
What makes Everyone Orchestra performances stand out from other superjams is the conducting. Butler, along with several others, facilitate the jams using giant cue cards which direct the musicians and audience alike in a massive celebratory coming together. The directions include anything from key and time changes to mood swings and audience actions such as massive singalongs, shouts, jumps, dances, song title suggestions and more.
Last year's event raised over $16,000 for The Pangaea Project which engages teenagers from underserved neighborhoods in local and international service-learning projects by promoting the development of leadership skills, increasing global awareness, and fostering a commitment to work towards social change. Proceeds from show ticket sales, fundraising raffles, and other donations will be contributed directly to The Pangaea Project. Additionally, a local foundation has generously offered The Pangaea Project a Challenge Grant for the Third Annual Benefit that will match every dollar that is raised beyond ticket sales.
Previous Pangaea Project benefits have been enlivened by guest speakers: at-the-time presidential candidate/Congressman Dennis Kucinich, environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill, and Pangaea co-founders Deb Delman and Stephanie Tolk. Ms. Butterfly Hill reflects on the Everyone Orchestra, "I was blown away by the talent, humor, love, and brilliantly orchestrated improvisation coming together in what truly can be described as magic."
