BURLINGTON, VT—Vermont's vibrant blues and jazz community is reaching out in an all-star effort to assist New Orleans musicians affected by Hurricane Katrina. All proceeds of "From Burlington to Bourbon Street," a star-studded benefit concert on the Flynn Theater on Tuesday, October 18 at 7 p.m. will go to the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund. The not-for-profit organization has been established by the famed Preservation Hall to aid New Orleans musicians who lost their homes, instruments, and livelihoods to the devastating Gulf Coast storm.
Vermont's finest blues and jazz artists will be joined on stage at the Flynn by very special guests the Rebirth Brass Band from New Orleans–crowd favorites at this year's Burlington Discover Jazz Festival Blues Tent and musicians who themselves suffered serious losses as the result of the hurricane. "From Burlington to Bourbon Street" will feature high-energy blues and great jazz from Rebirth, the Ellen Powell Quartet, Unknown Blues Band, Sandra Wright Band, Onion River Jazz Band, Tom Cleary and Friends, and three guest artists–vocalists Tammy Fletcher and Little Joyce and saxophonist Dave Grippo. Also just added to the bill is Chip Wilson, a local favorite who has lived in New Orleans for the last ten years. The benefit performance is being presented by the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, Nectar's, and Burlington City Arts. The concert will be hosted by George Thomas of Vermont Public Radio's Jazz in the Evening and The Point-FM's Global Jam. The Flynn MainStage event will be followed by full set featuring the fiery Rebirth Brass Band at Nectar's in Burlington at 11 p.m. (The performance at Nectar's is being ticketed separately.)
"New Orleans is one of the bedrocks of American culture – the birthplace of jazz and a hotbed of the blues and funk. The Vermont musicians who have stepped up to organize and perform at this benefit concert are leading our community in reaching out to those New Orleans artists who have inspired and transformed us with their contributions to America’s musical culture. The New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund will assist these extraordinary musicians as they put their lives back together following the disastrous effects of Katrina," said Brian Mital, managing director of the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, one of the organizers of the benefit concert.
