The Conscious Alliance and The String Cheese Incident are very happy to announce that we will be staging a tour long food drive for victims of Hurricane Katrina during our upcoming fall tour. Renowned rock artist, Michael Everett, has created a very special poster to commemorate these events. Every patron to donate 20 non-perishable food items will receive a free SCI poster! The first ten people to donate 50 items will receive a signed and numbered poster, by Michael Everett, and the first five people to donate 100 items will receive a poster signed by members of SCI at every show on the tour!
Collection bins will be located outside of the main entrance to each venue. Whenever the truck is overloaded we will be donating a portion of the food to the local 2nd Harvest Food Bank affiliate in the surrounding area. At the end of the tour, we will have a full 24ft. truck for delivery to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank affiliate of the Gulf region that is in the most need of the specific items we have collected.
The best items for donation are:
Bottled water, hand held snacks such as granola and energy bars, breakfast bars, beef jerky, peanut butter, canned meals such as hearty soups, stews, chili and/or pasta, plates, bowls, cups and utensils; toiletries and diapers.
Our community has already raised $25,000 that was used to purchase specific items for the Houston Food Bank. The weekend after Katrina hit, we were able to purchase over 17,500 lbs. of food and toiletries for the Houston Food Bank (www.Houstonfoodbank.org). During our visit we realized that while the food bank is providing food for all of the agencies servicing hurricane evacuees (shelters, church's, the Astrodome, etc.), no one is delivering food to the many hotels in the surrounding area that are also full of Katrina evacuees. On our upcoming visits to Houston in September and October, we will be delivering food and supplies to the many people held up in hotels that are also in dire need.
