They call it Organica. The melding of the real human touch with that hard to resist electronic dance music. Some may like to call it techno, jungle, drum-n-bass or trance, but whatever it is called there is intelligent live music that kicks a mean beat sweeping our nation. Bands like Sound Tribe Sector 9, The Disco Biscuits, Fat Mama and the New Deal are superior examples of this wave. While each create distinct sounds, the overall gist is the same: push the boundaries and see where it takes you. There is a great article in December's URB Magazine about these bands and this movement.
Lake Trout, originating from Baltimore, incorporates different elements from electronica to trance with sound effects and even beautifully subtle melodies to create an innovative new sound. The band includes the talent of Woody Ranere on guitar and lead vocals, Ed Harris on guitar, Mike Lowry on drums, James Griffith on bass and Matt Pierce on sax, flute, rhodes piano, percussion and lots of other fun sound making stuff.
There is a lot of activity going on in the Lake these days. Their holiday shows are going to be a blast as they make a run of the mid-atlantic states. Starting at The Wetlands on December 26, they make stops at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, The Trocadero in Philly, The NorVa in Norfolk, VA, Alley Katz in Richmond and New Years Eve at The 13th Floor at The Belvedere Hotel in their hometown of Baltimore. Mark your calendars and plan to make it out to one of these shows!
In addition to this New Years Run, Lake Trout has got some big touring plans for 2001. The boys will be teaming up with Galactic and Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade for an assault on the western part of our country. This Sno-Core Icicle Ball will be hitting the fine cities of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Vail, Denver, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Detroit, and numerous other cities in January and February 2001. Check back to JamBase for final confirmation of the Sno-Core tour itinerary.
Also in early 2001, Lake Trout’s latest CD Alone at Last will be re-released with national distribution on the Phoenix Rising label. The CD was recorded live at Trax, in Charlottesville, VA, with DJ Who.
