A MEETING OF THE TRIBES| 12.2 | L.A.

It seemed like all of Southern California had been anticipating this show for weeks. I even heard word of fans traveling down from the Bay Area and up from San Diego to catch this gig. When my friends and I got there there were a few fans hanging around the club while Sector 9 was completing their soundcheck. As we waited in line for the doors to open a line started to gather around the block from Club Fais Do Do. Doors finally opened at around 8:30 and you could feel the anxiousness of the crowd set in. It took some time for ID's to get checked, which caused some delays getting in, but hell, the minute I walked into the venue, I realized that this was going to be a special evening. Fais Do Do was tiny! For those of you familiar with your west coast venues, imagine a room about the size of San Francisco's Last Day Saloon or the Coach House in Santa Barbara. This was going to be one intimate (but crowded) show!

Upon arrival we found a popular Los Angeles DJ named Wonder Bred was spinning some funky house stuff to warm the crowd up. There were some great visuals projected on the screen hanging behind the equipment on stage. We immediately went and grabbed a beer and tried to stake out some space near the stage knowing that this room would fill up in no time. There were all kinds of fun toys and party favors spread over the tables for everyone to grab which I thought was a nice touch.

As Wonder Bred finished spinning some house, Particle took the stage. Particle is apparently a new addition to the So-Cal music scene and they did not disappoint. They had a mixture of funk and techno beats. It was very much a Galactic vibe. Everybody there was funking to these guys and once again the visuals were ON once again. I almost cried laughing when I saw Teletubbies being projected behind the band.

Particle was followed up by another very funky DJ out of LA, Derrick Starr. This guy could spin! His style was truly unique, mixing Breakbeats with deep funky house and Psychedelic Trance. My buddy told me he's seen Derrick Starr spin at some of those crazy Desert Raves out by Barstow. People seemed really into him here tonight! A very good warm up for Sound Tribe Sector 9!

It was around midnight when Sector 9 took the stage for what we heard would be one long set due to 2am curfew rules. The visuals kicked in behind the Sound Tribe and once again the crowd was grooving. It was a packed and noisey house by this time but the crowd still had energy. This was only my 3rd time seeing Sector 9. I caught them last year in Santa Monica, where only about 50 people showed up at their gig at 14 Below and then later on in the summer at High Sierra. It's obvious this band is growing rapidly. Sector 9's set seemed to start off a bit slugglish, but by 1 AM they were in full gear. An hour later the night came to an end. As we walked out the door at around 2 AM we were handed an event sticker printed up by 250 Productions (the event organizer). Very cool!

I must say that I'm usually not a big fan of the "rave" or "electronic" scenes here in LA. But, this Meeting of the Tribes did make me open my eyes a bit to the techno world. I haven't danced so hard to a DJ in a long time. Both the musicians and DJ's seemed to feed off each other very well and kept the audience wanting more. A Meeting of the Tribes certainly did seem to take place in Los Angeles this past Saturday night. Electronic and jam worlds were bridging that evening.
