MIKE GORDON TAKES THE NEXT STEP

There have been times when I felt Trey's decision has opened big doors for me, and I should be forever indebted to him for ending Phish, though I would have continued to play with Phish happily.
-Mike Gordon

Phish's Phinal Exit after the Last Notes of Coventry :: 08.15.04 :: By Jeff Kravitz

THOUGHTS ON PHISH

Talking with a man who dominated most of the mid-nineties through Phish, I couldn't resist the urge to inquire into his thoughts on the fan response to the band's breakup and if people still ask him if they're going to get back together.

Mike Gordon & Trey Anastasio :: 08.14.04 :: Coventry, VT
By Libby McLinn
"I talk to people, and I go out a lot. They don't ask as much as they did six months ago. I have my hotline too and people leave messages. People are more in an acceptance mode, so they're not really pushing it."

"The grieving process is a lot easier then I thought it would be. It's not nearly as bad as divorce. There have been times when I felt Trey's decision has opened big doors for me, and I should be forever indebted to him for ending Phish, though I would have continued to play with Phish happily."

"This way it's just forcing me. There was so much of Phish that was done for me: the songwriting, the managing, the planning of the big festivals, the newsletters, stuff that earlier on I used to help do. Now I feel like it's just really a chance to try and express myself. I should have tried harder with Phish instead of getting so deeply into filmmaking, but for whatever combination of reasons I didn't in the last years - although on tour I always loved it. I always loved playing."

Phish :: 9.20.90 :: Somerville Theatre, MA
By B.C. Kagan
"The hardest thing is not the feedback from other people but the internal feeling that you're not living up to before. It is a challenge, but I kind of feel like I appreciate the challenge. It makes me want to try even harder to have fun and to have life still be an adventure."

"It's not just the end of Phish - it's turning 40, things are just a little bit different. Life can and should still be an adventure. Sometimes touring with Leo I wish we could extend jams for longer periods of time, and sometimes we do. We have such a good open communication that if one of us has a thought or idea, we talk about it or do it without any hard feelings built up."

"Playing with The Duo (Benevento/Russo) has been really fun too. Those guys are just so easy to hook up with, and they're just so up for having fun. Up for exploring and anything, and I can't say enough. I'd love to go out and play with them again."

"But then I'll go back and listen to some old Phish tape or something, and there is this intangible quality that comes from twenty years of chemistry that is deep, even deeper than the music - something in the friendship and the hanging out and the way that couples with the music."

"There was something that was fading - the inclination to do new things at the rate we needed to continue to stay a band. But in terms of just the sailing quality of the jam - I was getting a lot of that in our last tour."

"A lot of people don't have the experience of doing the same thing from eighteen to forty. Even if it's the most amazing thing in the world, you start to wonder, 'Should I be trying other things too?'

just saw mike and leo in lawrence, ks last night. they have a very beautiful chemistry. being a delicate acoustic set, there was more of a buttoned up feel to the show which took a few unexpecting phish phans by surprise. the show seemed short but i guess it would when you don't have 10, 15, 20 minute jams taking up time. i had the chance to meet gordo briefly...he made himself very accessable after the show, just walking around talking to people outside the venue. i can't say enough about the person he is and i will always root for him. btw, nice article andy.

Great article! Ya know, when I think off the post Phish thing, I feel Mikey connects with the fans the most. He expresses what a lot of us feel when it comes to Phish's music and the music influenced and covered by Phish.
Mike was the one who always made himself accesable to the fans after the shows. Mike was the one who made then statement at Coventry. And Mike was the one who seemed to have the hardest time with coming to terms with the end of Phish.
What am I saying? I just feel Mike is so amazing doing this thing with Leo. I saw them at the Fillmore in Cali on the Clone tour and it was amazing. I love the new album..........especially "I Can't Hang". Congrats Mike on your next step and we can't wait to see ya in Seatle.

Sniff, sniff...I guess it's a "coming of age" for fans as well. But, I would have happily continued going to Phish shows. The music never stops. Great article!

It's great getting news on someone that you've geared many years of your life toward. I've seen Phish, Duo, and Leo and Mike many times, and I really enjoy it all. It's very informative getting information on what they are currently doing. Thanks!! Does anyone know the phone number to the hotline?????

Relix's most recent issue has an interview with both Gordon/Kottke and he briefly discusses Phish's end. Both stories say about the same thing, but when you read in between the lines, I sense a bit of resentment towards Trey. Maybe this is why I feel like I can identify with Gordo.
Gordon/Kottke are also putting out better music than Trey.

What to do??? Benevento/Russo or Gordon/Kottke on 10/06 (my b-day). Considering shows @theIndependent run much later, my bet is on Gordo showing up there (especially since it would be kind of hard to bring in an organ and a drum set into the Fillmore, just for an encore or a sit-in...but I'd love to see it!!!) Anyone with some insider tips as to Gordo's post-show plan for the evening????

ps. interesting story, great writer, wonderful subject. Thanks.

I can kind of understand where he is coming from when he talks abot the beakup of Phish. But listening to those last few shows I cant help wondering why you put a stop to all of this magic. Yeah Mike we love you !

Although Trey wrote most of the Phish tunes, I think Mike has always defined Phish's sound, and he has always been my favorite one to listen to. It seems as though he never has an "off" night; he always plays like every time might be his last. As much as I love and miss Phish, I think Inside In and the subsequent tour was one of the coolest sounds I've heard. Soulfood Man? Gordon Stone? That little hottie in the Catholic School girl dress that I always see at Red Square and always seems to be sitting next to me at shows? That project was the real deal, and I can't wait to see it again. Hopefully Brad will hook me up with backstage passes at the TLA again. Brad, see you at the Blarney Stone!

Mike, your exploratory bass-mind fills me with ecstatic joy. You did and are doing more than almost every bass player on the planet. Keep it up. Your the man... Explore away!

Omg I burst outloud laughing at the part where Mike had just listened to the album in the car and loved it and later noticed the treble was all the way down. My life was saved by Phish, but Mike made me realize life is too short to listen to mediocre bass players. Groove is in the heart.

DAMN ANDY... I haven't seen anything from you in awhile. Must be fresh from the Newyled living.... congrats. Anyhoo... Saw Gordon with The Duo last night at the Independent. It gave me a new repsect for Gordon. I assumed he would stagnate a bit as time went on. He is beautiful, cryptic, and passionate. You could tell.... "being up for anything"... just getting out there and jamming, and having fun. It was a good energy, and I hope to see more. Cheers!

a good friend of mine in a well known phish cover band said that mike had come to their show and afterwards asked them if they knew how to play fluffhead... as if he wanted to play it... remember trey forgot to play that post hiatus... anyhoo... the phix didnt know how to play it at that time and mike was bummed a little cause he loved the song... thought it was a great comment on how egomania can ruin the chemistry of a working group... i guess we can expect more regurgetated setlists and lackluster jams from mr. anastasio... carry on gordo... if there is a chance for phish its in you... take the lead
