Thursday night at the Maple Leaf brought Have Soul, Will Travel. A local band comprised of players from, among other bands, the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars, Quintology, and Sunpie and the Sunspots, their musical focus was on the groove. Specifically, the groove according to Bobby Hutcherson, Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, and Stanley Turrentine.

Have Soul, Will Travel’s two set show ripped pages from the late 60s Blue Note songbook, charging through covers led by the hollow body guitar stylings of axe man Bert Cotton. Incorporating the stylings of Boogaloo Jones and Grant Green, Cotton soloed with style over the tight rhythm’s being laid down by drummer Kevin O’Day.

It was a sparse crowd at the Maple Leaf, as many fans were no doubt torn away by the enticing allure of a free surprise Galactic show at Tipitinas. While the musical palates of the Galactic seekers were no doubt stimulated, they missed an opportunity to see a live band of talented musicians skillfully reinterpret groove standards that had heretofore only been heard by this listener on vinyl.
