SCI HORNING'S HIDEOUT: THE MAGIC REMAINS

  • Send to a Friend

M. Kang :: Horning's 2005
...and the sun shines on morning dew drops while Oregon mist hangs
flocking the Cascade pines above my campsite.
The trees hide giggling fairies who point at me remembering my presence
from festivals long since past.

I rise before the others and gaze out over the meadow dotted with Coleman, Kelty,
and Eureka! tents of multicolor.
If I squint just right they all blend,
the colored tents, into wildflowers rich with the nectar
of dreams; dreams of festival season.

I remember the last time perched upon Land's End, the rise above the meadow,
weary with fatigue from dance and surreal prance;
midnight rituals conjured by the fairy overlords who protect
Horning's Hideout, who keep the groove real.

I remember the last time perched upon Land's End weary with fatigue,
your hand in mine as we watched the moon rise and then set in the conifers before us.

In the midnight moonlight the slow motion game of celestial catch between the wood elf and the moon moth captured our gaze and we giggled,
capturing the spirit of the eve.

We watched the moon slowly being tossed between the pines.
We declared our love for life that night and danced for the fairies.

SCI Horning's Hideout 2005
Last year was my first Horning's experience and it completely changed my life. I flew in solo from Florida. It was my first Cheese show that I was totally by myself, and I left that weekend with more friendships that I hold dear to my heart than I could have possibly imagined. I consider Horning's Hideout the Mecca. It's a place where everyone can set aside the real world and just concentrate on being alive.

On Friday night, Xavier Rudd got everyone in the right mood. The rainstorm throwdown during his set was one of the most magical things I have ever been a part of. It was like every crash of thunder and every stroke of lightning made everyone dance harder and faster. When the power kept going out, I attributed it to the gods making sure we saved some energy for the rest of the weekend. When Cheese finally came onstage, I started talking to the guy next to me. We became instant friends and we were groove buddies the rest of the night. We exchanged information and planned to meet up throughout the weekend. It was like we were best friends who had finally been reunited after years without seeing each other.

Fast forward to the present... 13 months and 20 cheese shows later, my Horning's groove buddy and I have a beautiful three week old daughter and a new life ahead of us. I can't stress how much I believe that Cheese magic brought us together. If it weren't for this band and Horning's Hideout, I would NOT be where I am today. I'm anxiously awaiting the time when we can return to the Mecca... this time as a family.

Horning's Hideout 2005
I have been to the last three Horning's and I really wish I was going to make the last Horning's ever, but that won't be happening for several reasons, but they are all good reasons and they stem from what happened at last year's Horning's Hideout with the String Cheese Incident and friends.

During May and June my grandmother (Nana) became very ill and was in the hospital. I had gotten a phone call from my parents saying she wasn't going to make it too much longer. I was devastated and so saddened. At that time I was already planning on going to Horning's Hideout but that didn't matter anymore. However, I was planning to do much more than just go to Horning's Hideout to enjoy my time; I was also going to propose to my girlfriend Aubrey.

My Nana passed away the week of Horning's Hideout. At that time I was doing some really deep soul searching on what I should do. My Nana's funeral was the Saturday of Horning's and I didn't even think of going to Oregon. But then I started thinking of what my Nana would want me to do. I realized she would want me to go and confess my love to Aubrey and ask for her hand in marriage. I then sat down with my family and told them what I intended to do. I was going to leave after my Nana's viewing and not go to the funeral. I was going to go and propose to Aubrey. They understood, congratulated me and gave me their blessing.

The next morning after the viewing I flew to Portland, very sad but knowing what I had to do. Aubrey and my friends picked me up and I felt good to be around life long friends that day. That evening I felt so blessed to be with my friends and listening to my favorite band and being at one of the most wonderful places on earth, Horning's.

The next morning Aubrey and I took a stroll down by the amphitheater and I asked her to come with me to the bridge that goes out to the little island down there. We walked hand in hand and onto the bridge. I then turned to her and I told her I had something to say. I took a poem I had written out of my pocket and began to read. I then took her hands in mine and then pulled out the ring and asked her to marry me. She said "YES!" We have been married since June 11th, 2005 almost one year after Horning's last year.

We have since moved, got new jobs and are building our new life together. Unfortunately, we will not be going to Horning's this year because of all that is new in our life together. However, we give thanks to Horning's Hideout where we started our path in this life together and all the good times we have had there in the past. We also give thanks to my wonderful Nana who passed away and the blessing of both of our families.

Thank you Horning's Hideout!

Peak Experience :: Horning's Hideout 2005
I've gone to all the NWSS at Horning's, but have only made it up there for the Cheese in 2003. I'll make it a two-fer this week. But my fiancé and I have a long and wonderful connection with the local Visitor's Crew up in the North West. So we were told that there was to be a raffle of the crew's crafts and goods associated with a party they were planning on having at Horning's. Well we had just conducted a similar raffle at HSMF and were ready to help. Anyhoo, the scene pre-party a Horning's was kind of disorganized. Folks had brought stuff for the raffle but no one brought the tickets to sell. Well my fiancé tore up two paper sacks and put together the numbering scheme to make the raffle happen. I sold a ton of tickets and later at the party gave away some great prizes. Framed photos, handmade dream-catchers and rock posters were just some of the many prizes scored by those "in it to win it." It was with amazement that later the next day, we ended up donating $276 to the Conscious Alliance Food Drive. It was super gratifying to have such a wonderful time and do that much good.

Keith Moseley :: Horning's Hideout 2005
I'm still glowing. I will carry the good vibes and feelings that I gathered from being a part of Horning's for weeks to come. All I have to do is close my eyes and place myself back into one of my many memories such as chillin' at the tent with the crew, Rat Tail '05, afternoon veggie corn dogs, dancing, dancing, dancing, sunning at the lake with the girls, catching the parade on Sunday, and so much laughter my cheeks hurt.

Finally, one of my favorite memories of the entire weekend was seeing my good friend Brian Blue from SCI Ticketing on stage with The Cheese during "Jellyfish" drinking beer and playing our friends' baby's toy maraca.

Peak Experience :: Horning's Hideout 2005
I'm not sure if it's considered late-night shenanigans, but I can't remember a trip on which I have laughed more with my friends. Geoff telling his "Aristocrats" joke and scaring the people away next to us. Stan getting out of his tent at like three-in-the-morning with a whiskey bottle for a bowl.

I feel very lucky that I got to have all of the Horning's experiences that I could. It seems strange that I may never go to Horning's again... especially since we've never missed one.

I just hung out with my friends, drinking and partying and wandering around Horning's. Good times!!

I also haven't laughed as hard as I did that weekend in a long, long time.

SCI :: Horning's Hideout 2005
Here's my random highlights, not in any order:
1. Seeing everyone. It's a bit of a family reunion each time we go to Horning's, so it's good to get people together in a relaxed environment and chill out together.
2. Sitting around camp all day doing nothing and not feeling guilty. With busy lives, it's nice just to relax, chill out, drink beverages, and hang out with friends.
3. Late-night dance competition/trash talking at the campsite.
4. Our camp. One of the best we've had. five minute walk to stage, plenty of level space, shade all day, close to cars, not too close to bathrooms, and large enough for a big group.

Charles Solinger's Top 10 List:
10. Seeing all the amazing friends that we always see at the shows because that is what makes these events so great. All our friends and peeps being together in such an amazing place for the last Incident there? Guess we'll see next year.
9. Seeing all the amazing friends that we always see at the shows because that is what makes these events so great. All our friends and peeps being together in such an amazing place for the last incident there? Guess we'll see next year.
8. Seeing all the amazing friends...
