A WEST COAST SEX MASH

East meets West as New York City Downtown maestro Steven Berstein and his cohorts in mayhem that make up Sex Mob ramble out west to meet up with his old "Downtown" friend Wayne Horvitz, who has since transplanted himself out to the fertile lands of the Pacific Northwest, and his group in the groove, Zony Mash for a five city, six-show tour of the West Coast from December 11th through the 17th.

The two groups will be breathing the life back into modern music with three full sets of music each night. One full set of Mob! One full set of Mash! And a nightly intra-group jam session that is not to be missed.

On the state of the jazz world, past and present, Bernstein, the world's foremost slide trumpet virtuoso has been heard saying "people would go out to clubs, listen to the music, go home and get laid. Simple as that. We're bringing that spirit back." Eveyone is fair game in the Sex Mob songbook, from Duke Ellington to the Rolling Stones to Los Del Rio. Sex Mob is on a mission to reclaim the past glories of Jazz, bring them straight into the 21st Century, and the audiences are the beneficiaries.

Zony Mash is a Seattle-based band that plays improv-heavy instrumental music that is firmly grounded in American roots music, from blues to R&B to funk to rock'n'roll. Composer, pianist and keyboardist Wayne Horvitz has been a major player in the New York scene since the '70's, performing and collaborating with some of the Big Apple's most creative musicians - such as John Zorn, whose legendary band "Naked City" featured Wayne. As the leader of Zony Mash, Horvitz has enlisted the talents of Seattle's top talent: guitarist Timothy Young, bassist Keith Lowe, and drummer Andy Roth. Combining incredibly funky musicianship with Wayne's inimitable songwriting and a razor sharp rhythmic sense, Zony Mash continues to elude comparison.

Sex Mob's latest release, Solid Sender (Knitting Factory Works), has been termed "an alternative jazz slam-a-thon teeming with iron and underscored by big-as-a-house backbeats, ultra-grooving upright basslines, multiphonic shriekback saxophone and all manner of sonic subversion." Jazz Times, April 2000

The latest venture by Zony Mash, Upper Egypt, contains keyboard playing from another level according to Keyboard Magazine: "Upper Egypt finds him on B-3, Wurly and Nord Lead as the band lays down some deep grooves under some highly inventive compositions, with plenty of room for cleverness, humor, and brilliant improvisation."

This tour will also allow audiences to experience the reunion of Wayne Horvitz with one-tim Pigpen bandmate Briggan Krauss, who now shares the stage with Steven Bernstein as the alto saxophonist in Sex Mob.
