 Hookahville by Scott Preston |
Waking up to Ralph Stanley on Sunday felt like the epitome of summer. His quick fingers jumping across the strings in the bright sunlight was worth the price of admission alone. Changing pace to Galactic's funk was certainly a transition, but a welcome one as Frontier Ranch, Ohio suddenly felt like New Orleans. Stanton Moore hammered out some Jazz Fest-style funk that was the perfect lead-in to Robert Randolph's usual high-energy set, and the afternoon was off and running.
After such an impressive first night of music, expectations were high for night #2. Breaking out old favorites like "Alexander" and "Slipjig" alongside Ed McGee's popular new tune "Ice" was exactly what the crowd was looking for. A U2 "40" tease was a well-placed surprise amidst "Lady Vanilla" and the addition of many special guests including the Drew Emmitt Band, several backup singers, and a horn section rounded out the stage in fine fashion.

Anyone who has attended a Hookahville knows that the second night encore is always something wild. This year seven never-before-played tunes debuted as the encore, continually surprising and delighting a crowd that kept expecting it to end. Cliff did a great rendition of Ray Charles' "What I Say," complete with horns and backup singers. A "Billie Jean" tease introduced Eric Lanese's spotlight moment of "Enter Sandman" with Shane Frye of the Shantee on drums. And for the topper, Ed did a great job with Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain" into and back out of the Dead's "The Eleven." It was one blow after another, leaving hookah fans reeling as they stepped back into the darkness for another late night of fun.
And the best thing about Spring Hookahville? Fall Hookahville is less than three months away! Stay tuned to www.hookahville.com for band announcements coming soon.
