AUSTRALIA'S THE CAT EMPIRE EXPANDS INTO U.S.
Double-platinum sales Down Under elicits interest Stateside
(LOS ANGELES, CA) – Spring, 2005 – The Cat Empire a six-piece phenomenon from Melbourne, launches its first official North American trek next month. Australia's premier touring band, the jazz-soul-hip-hop-Cuban-reggae-gypsy amalgamation is set to hit both coasts as part of an international outing which also includes stops in Europe, the UK, and Asia.
The Cat Empire :: 2004 Australia National Tour
In its home country, The Cat Empire boasts four hit singles, consistently sold-out tours, and headlining spots on major festivals. In addition, its double-platinum self-titled debut CD earned six ARIA nominations – the Australian equivalent to the Grammys. With more than 300 live shows under its belt, including a support slot with James Brown, The Cat Empire inspires strong word-of-mouth buzz not unlike what jambands experience in the States. "We have heaps of people in the USA who have seen the band either in Australia or overseas" says frontman Harry Angus, "They've been e-mailing us non-stop to come to the States so we think it's about time we came over to get the party started!"
The Cat Empire arrives on U.S. shores fresh from recording its new CD, Two Shoes (Virgin/EMI AUS), in Havana, Cuba. Packed with heart-shaking anthems and sunny horns with a flirty vibe, the disc is produced by Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Ry Cooder, Ruben Gonzalez) and features local talent on horns and background vocals.
Originally formed in 1999 as a trio of Ollie McGill (piano, melodica, banjo), Ryan Monro (double bass, guitar) and Felix Riebl (percussions, vocals), the group expanded a year later with the addition of Will Hull-Brown (drums), Jamshid 'Jumps' Khadiwala (DJ, percussion) and Harry Angus (trumpet, vocals). Since 2000, The Cat Empire has built a massive global following with its incomparable live performances. Says Riebl, "We had a touring career before we had a recording career. It's been quite a natural progression for us, and we love it."
