RANA: STRETCHING THE LIMTS

If you want to hear a band that constantly challenges your ears and your expectations, RANA is for you. The four-piece band from New Jersey draws on a wide variety of genres, from classic rock to funk to jazz to country, and fuses them into a style all its own. The originals conjure up anything from Pink Floyd to the Allman Brothers Band to Wes Montgomery, and they are just as likely to cover Michael Jackson and Wil Oldham as Neil Young and Ween. But the group plays with a fierceness and a fearlessness that is missing from many other bands. It is not content to be simply background music for dancing or recreational drug use. Every song is played with incredible power and emotion, and demands your attention. At any point during a show, its next selection, or stretch of improvisation, has the potential to go into completely new territory. The band is never afraid to fail, or to succeed.

Some of RANA's best shows have taken place at New York City's Wetlands Preserve, and an upcoming one should join that pantheon. The band returns there on Tuesday, November 28, for two sets beginning at 10 PM. Past RANA events at the Wetlands have included special guests, debuts of new songs, and jaw-dropping, mind-boggling playing. The members have named this event "We Ride With Richie." Why? It's a mystery. What will they do on stage? That's a mystery too. That's why you have to come and see for yourself.
