SIGNAL PATH: THE GROWTH IN ELECTRONICA

  • Send to a Friend

Signal Path, one of the most interesting bands on the current organic electronica scene, proudly waves the flag of their home state of Montana. While the members originally hail from scattered parts of the nation (Louisiana, Tennessee, Michigan and Colorado) it was each of their moves to Montana that brought them together. Signal Path explores new musical terrain on a nightly basis which they hope will allow the band to continue to grow the way their hometown has recently (according to Inc. Magazine, "Missoula is one of our nation's fastest growing small cities.

The net result of all of this is that Signal Path is at the forefront of moving electronica into jazzy realms as electonica enters its adolescence. They are setting the mode for the future by working jazz instruments (particularly the up-right bass) and a jazz sensibility into their trance inducing musical approach. They create a blend of music that, at its best, can be simultaneously compelling and soothing, stirring yet comforting and powerful but subtle.

Missoula, Montana may not be considered a hotspot for music on the cutting edge... not yet anyway. However, Signal Path is much more than a local sensation these days. Now they have been tapped to open for artists as diverse as Galactic, the Legendary Wailers and Nelly. They also have had desired slots in many of our nation's major festivals including The High Sierra Music Festival, The Wakarusa Music Festival and The Area 51 Sound Test.

In order to be a truly meaningful musician, "You must be familiar enough with the whole of music," says Delfeayo Marsalis of the legendary first family of Jazz, "to comfortably extract the elements that are the most appropriate for each musical situation." Signal Path applies this philosophy to the ever-crowded electronic music world. The band is made up of musicians with varying levels of experience and studies Cuban, African, world beat, experimental rock, New Orleans funk, and improvisational, rock worlds with a high level of pure jazz awareness. It stands to reason that these five students of music would arrive at a sound that focuses more on the purity of sound and the chemistry between the musicians than on contrived energy swells and rock star bombast. As the sampled lyrics they use in some of their songs explain, "there's a difference between knowing the path and walking it." Signal Path is bridging the path of music's future.
