Drew Emmitt with LOS :: HSMF 2004
By Jeffrey V. Smith
Leftover Salmon founder, co-lead vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Drew Emmitt will lead his own Drew Emmitt Band on the "Freedom Ride Tour " this fall. Dates are being confirmed now by booking agency Skyline Music. The schedule will include the Strictly Bluegrass Festival on October 2nd in San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Park, and includes stops in Chicago, Cleveland, New York City, Washington DC, St. Louis, Portland, Seattle, Milwaukee, Madison, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Burlington VT. "The Freedom Ride Tour" begins September 29th and runs through early December.

With Leftover Salmon going on hiatus, Emmitt knew it was time to spread his own musical wings. On his website Drew writes to his fans, "I thank all who supported Leftover Salmon for the last 12 years. It's been fun, a lot of fun. I appreciate your continued support in my new band, the Drew Emmitt Band, which consists of Salmon bass player, Greg Garrison, Matt Flinner on banjo and mandolin, and Ross Martin on guitar. I'm looking forward to playing the newgrass/bluegrass that LOS was known for, but we hope to break new ground as well. I wish my bandmates in LOS well as they begin the next phase of their musical careers."

Compass Records will be supporting "The Freedom Ride Tour" with publicity as they continue to work Drew's critically acclaimed CD Freedom Ride. The recording rose to #7 on the Americana Music charts last year without the benefit of much touring. "My commitment to LOS prevented me from really supporting this CD when is came out. So I'm now excited to go out and play these songs." The Freedom Ride recording included guests John Cowan and Sam Bush both of the late band Newgrass Revival, plus Vassar Clements, Stuart Duncan, Peter Rowan, Randy Scruggs, and members of the John Cowan Band.

The Drew Emmitt Band will record a new CD in January for Compass with tentative release dates set for April 2005. More information on the band and tour can be found at www.drewemmitt.com.
