Several musicians from L.A.’s The Greasy BeatsGreasy Beats and the band West will backup novelty act William Hunglinked text on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Thursday, April 8th. Hung, the infamous American Idol reject, recently signed a $25,000 record deal with Koch Records and Fuse TV based on the pop culture’s fascination with Hung’s vocal interpretation of Ricky Martin’s hit song, “She Bangs.”
“We are extremely excited at the opportunity to perform in front of millions on the Tonight Show” said The GB’s leader Joel Bowers (also of JB and The RebellionJB and The rebellion) “but I think I speak for most in the band that we imagined the opportunity might have happened under different circumstances.”
While Will Hung’s huge popularity may be troubling to some JamBase readers, we can respect the fact that “the Hong Kong Ricky Martin” doesn’t lip synch.
The “Will Hung Horns” aka “The Greasy Horns" are comprised of Joel Bowers on tenor saxophone, Dan Boissy, on alto saxophone and Shaunte Palmer on trombone. Rounding out the all-star group are Keith Ladinsky, on keys (JB and The Rebellion) and Chris Lovejoy (Charlie Hunter, The Greasy Beats) on congas and percussion.
Hung’s producers aren’t the only ones taking notice of the outstanding musicians in The Greasy Beats, L.A.'s newest and hottest 10-piece jazz/funk ensemble. The GB’s features many talented SoCal musicians including members and former members of Robert Walter's 20th CongressRobert Walter's 20th Congress, CakeCake, The Breakestrabreakestra, Pseudopodpseudopod, Dogfyshdogfysh, The Southland, Nikhil Korulanikhil korula, and Jive.
The Greasy Beats are currently hosting ON THE CORNER, a new bi-monthly series at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica that features some of the best and brightest bands and DJs that L.A. has to offer. Co-presented by KJAZZ 88.1 FM (www.kkjz.org), ON THE CORNER brings the strict, straight up, 100% heavy funk, soul, and boogaloo directly from the old school every other Wednesday night.
