Dead Prez | Lets Get Free
Dead Prez | Lets Get Free | 2000 – Loud Records
Dead Prez’s debut album is of major importance. Leading MC’s SticMan and M1 are single-handedly trying to bring back black power and are taking no prisoners in their fight. Harkening back to the days of Public Enemy this album is up there with Fear Of A Black Planet. Rough, rugged and dirty beats are mixed with sultry background female singers, but it’s always the message that rises to the top. This album is never easy to consume and will often get a strange look from the casual listener… in fact you may be asked to “please change it.” But please, beware of those asking for the disc to be pulled – the message is necessary listening, and with elections around the corner, we all need to pay attention. And for those who say they don’t like to mix politics with music; wake up, everything is political. Touching on almost all of the major social and political injustices from the melting-pot mentality, (“I’m An African”), the disgusting state of inner city schools (“They Schools”), Americas eating disorder (“Be Healthy") the sickening “Police State” and more, this album may be painful, but it is crucial to look at where we are if we wish to move forward.
