Jack Johnson--surfer, musician, filmmaker--is proud to host the first annual Kokua Festival on January 3rd, 2004. The event will be held on the beautiful Kualoa Ranch on the windward side of Oahu. The Kokua Festival is a benefit event that will bring together environmental organizations, eco-friendly businesses, musicians, artists, teachers, and community leaders to promote sustainable living in Hawaii.
The Kokua Festival will offer an eclectic mix of live music, local food and merchants, and activities for all ages, while promoting environmental awareness in a fun and tropical atmosphere. All proceeds will go to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, a non-profit organization supporting educational and community programs that advocate sustainable living in Hawaii. The goal of the Kokua Hawaii Foundation is to educate people on how to live in harmony with the environment by reducing waste, recycling, using alternative energy sources in homes and cars, planting organic gardens, etc... Little changes that will help to preserve and protect Hawaii's beautiful environment.
The initial funds raised from the Kokua Festival will go towards jumpstarting awareness in and outside classrooms across Oahu by introducing gardening and recycling programs. The Kokua Hawaii Foundation will donate materials to schools and provide teachers with resources for integrating eco-friendly ideas into the curriculum. It is the foundation's hope that the school garden and recycling program will be the seed for more statewide programs like curb-side recycling pick-up for all Hawaiian residents as well as more community gardens in populated areas.
Born and raised in Hawaii himself, host Jack Johnson will be joined at this year's festival by local Hawaiian favorites Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom and Willie K, the hip-hop-infused social activist group Michael Franti and Spearhead, the Bronx-based beatmaker DJ Logic, as well as up-and-coming local talent Makana.
