Long live Frank Zappa! At least that is what Project/Object aims to achieve by faithfully re-creating his music. This is not your typical cover or tribute band, though. Frank Zappa was one of the true originals in the world of modern rock music, and his death in 1993 left quite a gap in the world of pop. His music, never easy to play, required musicians to be incredibly fluid and versatile, able to go from three-chord rockers to faux classical pieces with odd time signatures. Project/Object began in the early nineties as part of a yearly Frank Zappa birthday salute that took place in guitarist Andre Cholmondeley's basement. As size of the crowds grew, the momentum pushed Project/Object to go out on the road and spread the word and sound of Zappa.
This multi-piece band showcases Ike Willis, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Don Preston on national tour together for the first time ever. Willis and Brock were two of Zappa's most durable and beloved sidemen. Brock, the infamous saxophone player who played with Zappa from 1974-84, was Zappa's first front man vocalist-musician. It was his unmistakable voice and stage presence that helped to define the Zappa stage show. Ike Willis is known for his soulful vocal hysterics that made him the voice of Zappa's music for 14 years. The singer-guitarist has the distinction of playing with Zappa longer than any other musician. Willis, who toured the world six times with Zappa, fronts his own self-named band and plays guitar very very much like the master, with touches of Hendrix and Steve Vai thrown in. He was Zappa's vocal foil and appeared on such seminal works as You Are What You Is, Thingfish and the voice of "Joe" on Joe's Garage. In fact, he played with him right up until his death in 1993. Don Preston, aka Dom DeWilde, aka Biff Debrie, was part of the Mothers of Invention. After the Mothers broke up, he recorded with Frank Zappa on a couple of albums. Preston was also part of the Grandmothers and toured with them, playing Zappa's music after his death.
Project/Object recreates the live Zappa experience with pieces from the rock gadfly's entire career and is always converting the curious into dedicated fans. They remind the old fans of the way it used to be and let younger fans see and hear the way it was. If you dig Zappa, listen to Phish or read Vaclav Havel, then you do not want to miss this show!
