Well, we know that New York is the city that never sleeps, but wouldn't you think that a rockin' Mecca like Los Angeles would at least stay up past Conan? Sadly, no. Finding quality late night action in Los Angeles is like trying to find your intellectual soul mate on "The Fifth Wheel." This legendary music town shuts down way too early for most, leaving fans in search of late night grooves digging through their cd collections and wishing they lived in New Orleans. To the rescue come our knights in shining armor, The Greasy Beats, with the inaugural "On the Corner" at Cafe-Club Fais Do Do. While future nights in this new monthly series will run at regular hours, the first will indeed be a late night, running from 9 PM 'til the magic hour of 4 AM on Saturday, August 2nd. Yes, the same night that Galactic and MOFRO roll through with B.B. King, and Widespread Panic brings the groove on the second show of their three-night stand, fans will not have to drop their heads in defeat when the last notes ring at The Greek and The Wiltern, but will instead rev up their engines and head to the Mid City district for late night sets by Greasy Beats, Global Funk Council and DJ Medi4, plus The Greasy Beats Jam featuring very special guests (trust us!).
The Greasy Beats are a funky music machine which features many talented L.A. musicians including members of Pseudopod, Dogfysh, Jive, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Cake, Hustle and The Breakestra. These boys bring strict, straight-up, 100% extra-heavy funk directly from the old school. Guaranteed to satisfy the most discerning Hipster, when it comes to gettin' down, James Brown is the ground, son!
Global Funk Council plays intricate Jazz-influenced Rock & Roll compositions with incendiary moments of improvisation. The GFC maintains a dance-party vibe, yet brings enough heavy music theory mastery to impress the most trained ears.
And how do you describe someone who defies categorization? Just ask anyone who's been fortunate enough to see him open for Soulive, Garaj Mahal, The Motet, and Vinyl (among others), and they'll tell you that DJ Medi4 delivers the true, the hard, the funk and keeps the bodies moving on the dance floor for ridiculous periods of time, leaving the sweating, grooving masses to wonder if he’ll ever let up on his unrelenting funk assault. As fans at the sold-out "No Moore" party post-Phish New Year's 2003 can attest, Medi4's a pro in way too many music genres to count, but for "On the Corner," he'll deliver the down'n'dirty rare groove, power funk and hard soul that fans will most certainly seek after having their brains mangled by MOFRO, Galactic and Panic on Saturday August 2nd.
Haven't been to Fais Do Do? Well, Fais Do Do is unique to Los Angeles in that it's the only club in town that'll make you forget that you're in town! With its casual, comfortable deep southern vibe, Fais Do Do is reminiscent of New Orleans, complete with soulful California-Cajun cuisine and a great selection of beer and wine.
Could this be the beginning of a new era in a town desperate for a fresh start? We think so! Come join us "On the Corner" and you'll see why. Stay tuned to the websites of Cafe-Club Fais Do Do, Joel Bowers, Global Funk Council and DJ Medi4 for presale ticketing information.
