The Brotherhood of Groove rocked JazzFest in its hometown of New Orleans last week. Highlights included a killer set at Mama's Blues with Masters of groove featuring Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown Band), Grant Green Jr., and Ruben Wilson (Blue Note). Guitarist Brandon Tarricone sat in with a killer jam session late night that included Rob Wasserman on bass, as well as Alan Hertz and Eric Levy of Garaj Mahal. BOG sax man Mikiel Williams was invited to play the whole show with the Masters of Groove, and the next night went to the Howlin' Wolf and played with the Organ Summit featuring Rueben Wilson, Jimmy McGriff, and John Gross. Needless to say, the music was off the hook.
Recently, the band was nominated (with Galactic and Papa Grows Funk) by the Big Easy Awards as the "Best Funk Band in New Orleans". Although the award was given to Galactic, the Brotherhood has received its share of recognition lately. Gambit Weekly honored the BOG debut album, Pocket Full of Funk, as among the “Top 10 Louisiana Albums” and Offbeat magazine recognized the BOG as the 2002 “Best Emerging Funk/R&B/Soul Band in New Orleans.”
Now the BOG is packing up and getting ready for a ten-night East Coast run. Joining founder Brandon Tarricone (JamBase.com “Top 10 Guitarists of 2001”) this time around is the celebrated horn section, led by Mikiel Williams, that includes several saxophones, harmonica, and a mind blowing wind-synthesizer, as well as a variety of vocal stylings from reggae, spoken word, and soul, to hip-hop. Will Langford’s (former Honey Pot member) thumping bass lays down a blanket to groove on. Newcomer Matt Bogdanow will be stepping out of Berklee College of Music to funk it up on drums. In the past, Matt has performed at international Jazz fests around the world, as well as major theatrical productions such as Tommy. He also has been playing with both Kenwood Dennard and Bob Gulloti on a regular basis in Boston. In addition to those funkalicious brothers, the BOG will be joined by many special guests and talented friends nearly every night of tour throughout the East Coast.
