JACOB FRED TAKES UP RESIDENCE IN THE EAST

They say that it’s rare to catch lightning in a bottle, to hold onto the singular magic of a special moment. One hopes that the owners of Harper’s Ferry near Boston and the Mercury Lounge in NYC’s East Village have swung by the glass factory in preparation for the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's special residency in April.

Every Tuesday evening beginning April 1st, the Fred will take the stage at Harper’s along with some of the best musicians the region has to offer. Then on Wednesdays starting April 2nd they head into New York to cram the stage at the Mercury with far flung musical exploration. What’s exciting is that each set of co-conspirators will be joining them for two nights in a row, two chances for the unique flavor of these cities to seep into the notes and two nights to stack up the vibe generated by each configuration of very very talented players.

Joining them on the Ferry and the Mercury for the inaugural voyage will be six-string wonder and fan darling Steve Kimock, who will travel to New York the next night where the group will be joined by ridiculously fluid saxophonist/flautist Jay Rodriguez (Groove Collective). The following week roadhouse raw Sam Kinninger (Soulive, Lettuce) will blow the soul out of his horn for two nights. The third week will find one of the great jazz trio leaders, endlessly inventive saxophonist George Garzone, taking time out from The Fringe to join the boys. Add in Screaming Headless Torsos' vocalist Dean Bowman and one can almost hear the thunder heading in before the lightning. Next up is utterly unique guitar marvel David Fiuzynski, an especially inspired choice for creative foil for JFJO. His band Kif will also open the shows on April 22nd and 23rd, so arrive early. Capping off the festivities in the final week of April is a free form group grope with The Slip, who will be joining Jacob Fred on stage in both cities. Six musicians and a thousand and one possibilities for where the music might flow.

Life on Earth (featuring multi-instrumental whiz kid Ben Tuttle) will open Harper’s Ferry on April 29th as well as April 1st, 8th and 15th to lay down its brand of instrumental-ambient-rhythmic-organic-human music. The great white hope for rock ‘n’ roll, RANA, will lay it on heavy and hard at the Mercury Lounge on April 2nd to open up things for JFJO. On April 9th, lyrical sax lady Jessica Lurie and her Ensemble kick off the evening. One hopes that Lurie, Ben Tuttle and the lads of RANA find a spare square of stage to join in with the headliner on these nights.

What’s certain is the vortex generated by Jacob Fred will draw many more guests into this special opportunity to see the band quit their gypsy rambling. Rare is the night where a musician within a several mile radius isn’t drawn into the Odyssey. With such luminaries as Marco Benevento & Joe Russo and Karl Denson in town on the same dates, it’s hard to imagine that each night of this series won’t find a surprise or three coming down the proverbial pike.

At its heart, this series is all about the art of collaboration and the fearless bravado of sizzling improvisation that happens when the persons involved are of this caliber. What’s certain is that whoever hops up on stage with this supremely talented trio of free spirits will find themselves in musical territory sure to free up minds and bodies all along the Eastern Seaboard in April.
