Umphrey's McGee | "Fat" Tuesday 03.04.03 | Theater of Living Arts | Philadelphia, PA
Chicago’s Umphrey's McGee invaded Theater
of the Living Arts on locked-down South Street in Philadelphia on Fat Tuesday.
Despite the heavy police presence around the venue due to past year’s rioting,
the patrons of the TLA were treated to a unique brew of sonics from these six
young men on a mission. Mixing a batch of polyrhythmic originals that featured
interlocking guitars and interesting layers of sound, with both choice and humorous
cover choices (such as The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows,” Metallica’s “One”
and Warren G’s “Regulate”), the Umph crew certainly won over some new and enthused
fans in the city of Brotherly Love. Philadelphonic photog Jaci Downs was there
to capture some of the madness, especially the wily Steve Vai antics from guitarist
Jake Cinninger.
