The Derek Trucks Band brought its diverse, improvisational brand of musical exploration to The Fillmore, and those lucky to be in attendance were not disappointed.
Derek Trucks' blazing style of slide guitar was accompanied by the sounds of the
very talented group of musicians that make up his band. Todd Smalie and
Yonrico Scott have provided the rhythm behind Mr. Trucks since the mid-‘90s,
a few years after Derek first formed the band at age 12. Kofi Burbridge
joined the group in 1999 and adds his considerable talent as a classically
trained keyboard and flute player. The sound is rounded out by the soaring
vocals of Mike Mattison, who joined DTB just last year.
The band ripped through a set of old classics, as well as new material from
its latest release, Joyful Noise. Joining the band onstage during the
set was an animated Phil Lesh, who excited the crowd with a lively version
of "Franklin's Tower." Phil's visit to the stage had been widely rumored
beforehand, and was no surprise given his appearance before the
show to set up his equipment and smile at the fans.
Throughout the evening the Derek Trucks Band kept the crowd on its feet with
a soulful blend of jazz, rock, and blues music that defines its ever-evolving sound.
