Waylandsphere is a Raleigh, NC-based band that, in its first year of existence, has turned heads all over the Southeastern US by playing its own brand of rock, blues, jazz and funk. With highly adept instrumentation, perceptive lyrics and a penchant for improvisation, Waylandsphere has quickly developed as a preeminent live act. They have a great new EP coming out Tuesday, Salt Works Meditation, and are heading out West with a good friend to support its release.
Waylandsphere’s introduction to the scene came with a string of dates in the fall of 2002, when Cecil “P-Nut” Daniels (of Widespread Panic fame) played with the band all over the Southeast, and tour culminated in a Halloween show at the world famous Tipitina's Uptown in New Orleans, where they were joined by Roger Lewis and Efrem Towns of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The response was so great that night that Waylandsphere ended up being the house band for the Dirty Zambi Ball at the legendary Howlin' Wolf on Halloween night. Along with P-Nut, Rev. Jeff Mosier, Count M-butu, Johnny Vidacovich, and Chris Chew (of North Mississippi Allstars) joined in on the fun and music making.
This tour should have the same fun vibe to it as did that in the Southeast last fall. It kicked off on March 12th in Vail, when the band opened for Carlos Washington & the Amazing Giant People, with whom they’ll be playing a few shows. After a big St. Patty’s day celebration in Telluride, Waylandsphere heads back to the Wolf Den Tavern for a “superjam” that will include Brian Jordan (Karl Denson's Tiny Universe) on guitar, as well as more top notch artists to be announced the day of the show.
Thursday, March 20th, Waylandsphere will catch back up with Carlos Washington & the Amazing Giant People and head down to The Starlight in Fort Collins. Friday, March 21st will bring about the String Cheese Incident after-party at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood. For this show they’ll be opening for X2, featuring Matt Abts (of Gov't Mule) and Johnny Neel. Expect many special guests this night as well!
The final two nights of the tour will be without P-Nut, but still should be memorable. Saturday, they’ll be at Sherpa & Yeti's in Breckenridge, opening for Signal Path, and Tuesday, March 25th, the final night of the tour, they’ll be at the Fox Theatre, once again with X2.
Those of you unfamiliar with Waylandsphere should get out there and check them out, for their music provides something for everyone. From the most critical musician to the light-hearted fan, their live performance is undeniably exciting and positively fun.
