Pittsburgh, PA., January 23, 2003—It’s a sound not common in these parts, but the rhythm of funk has always been beating in the soul of Shaun Gilmour, the former New Alcindor’s drummer and now proud papa of the New Soul Theory. Leaving his eclectic neo-soul outfit for accomplished talents, Gilmour has merged funk with East Coast Boogaloo and
heart-stopping breakbeat jazz.
The band is a combination of veteran musicians, feeding the audience a hearty dish of groove-driven funk topped-off with a smoking tenor sax. Gilmour leads the precession on drums, Scott Boni (pronounced Bon eye) blows away on tenor sax, Jack Ortego shines on bass and Jeff Mandell stirs the crowd on fusion guitar.
New Soul Theory was an experiment that blossomed during The New Alcindors hiatus this winter. The group began writing new material and jamming out at clubs. The attention they were getting made Gilmour re-think his involvement with the Alcindors.
“It’s the response that we got from the people who heard this new band and who had previously heard the Alcindors,” Gilmour said. “And the incredibly positive reaction from club owners and other musicians was overwhelming...it made me want to focus all of my attention on this project.”
Already drawing recognition from the press, New Soul Theory is co-headlining for Jim Payne’s House of Payne in March and has gigs booked throughout the spring. Working to develop new material, New Soul Theory is making their way to the studio but have yet to announce a release date.
“New Soul Theory is the ultimate jam session with the most amazing musicians,” says Gilmour, “It’s an experience, and we want to bring that experience to the world.”
